$40 maybe for the needed senors, but the RCX brick (the big ass thing everything is connected to / and what controls it), is at least $120. You're actually better of just buying the whole Lego Mindstorms set and getting a whole bunch of other sensors, parts, etc. . . For $195 online.
One thing that most people don't understand is how hard it is to fly a helicopter. It is not as simple as driving a car where you go and take a test to prove you understand the traffic laws and then go out on a road course with a DMV person for 15 to 20 minutes.
It takes years of schooling in order to be granted a helicopter pilots liscense. This is very costly, and requires a lot of time.
It is not uncommon for people to go to college for flight (airplanes), and once successfully passing their flight exams to go on and study helicopter operation.
My little sister is currently studying to be a commerical airline pilot and it will take her 4 years at the number flight school in the USA. Then if she wants to persue helicopters she has to take more classes and spent a lot more time gaining the airtime in a helicopter with an instructor, only then will she receive her helicoptiers liscense from the FAA. The FAA is strick and sometimes tough, and this is for good reason, would you trust any idiot with a piece of machinery like this? If they crash the thing into a crowded area they kill a whole lot people.
Helicopters are not like cars, when you wreck a car, most of the time you can survive, or if you die, you don't kill anyone else. When you crash a helicopiter you are probably automatically dead.
Well they have their business plan scribled down on a napkin, and they've got 50 programmers in the office ready to code something, and they seem just as good as all the other dot-coms out there that's stock is through the roof, oh wait wait wait, they have linux written on the napkin, this just has to be a winner!!!
I'm not sure that I agree with you when you say "It makes it seem like the US Post Office and AOL are somehow in cahoots." AOL has paid the post office money in order to rent some space in there buildings to advertise for their service. The post office certainly is not endorsing AOL. They are just taking the opportunity to make some money off them by allowing them to advertise within their walls.
Here's a situation for you, when you go to a sporting event and you see a billboard for "Budwiser" is that sports team that you came to see endorsing that beer? Or is the stadium just simply increasing the amount of money that they can make by renting some space out that would otherwise be empty?
One more for you, everyday the post office delivers you a whole bunch of mail, your tv guide, electric bill, and a Fredricks of Hollywood catalog for your girlfriend. Now the post office delivered it to you, so does that mean they are endorsing Fredricks of Hollywood and more specificly your raunchy imagination?
Any commercialization of NASA research or technology is a *good thing*. NASA needs to go the route the post office went aka let NASA run like a business, but still be able to receive some funding from the government when it's needed. It's just not working anymore with the current setup (allocate fixed amount of funding every year). If you allow NASA to begin making money then they can further their research and development, they can plan more missions, and maybe just maybe we'll get to mars sometime in our life time.
An added bonus, is maybe we can further kindle the private sector space exploration spark.
Hi, I'm putting together a cd of free software that I plan on selling on ebay. I'm lazy and I don't want to actually do any leg work, so please slashdot, make me a quick dollar and tell me about some good *free* software that I can sell on my 10,000 programs for windows for 99 cents.
Oh and if you're interesed you can find the listing at . . .
I just downloaded it and installed it after reading your message, and it's working just fine.
There are no other plugins, at least that I can find, so I only have ICQ and AIM working on the windows version.
This is badass though because I have to use a windows box at work and I was stuck with multiple chat programs. (I know there's trillion or whatever, but I didn't like it).
I am using Gaim, and I have connections going to IRC, AOL, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ. All work great, plus everything works as a plugin. I even have a plugin loaded the checks my out-going messages spelling.:-)
I am in a similar boat. I work 40 hours a week at night, and go to school during the day. I also like to go out once in a while, and I have a full time girlfriend.
First if you are with someone, they are going to need to understand that school and work are going to have to come pretty close to first. What this means is, you might not be able to be there all the time. (If they love you, they'll understand).
Find a mix of classes that work for you. Obviously if you are going for computer science you don't want to take 5 upper level computer science classes in the same semester. Take 1 and take a few ( 2 - 4 ) other general elective classes that you need. This should get you through the fall and spring, while knocking out your gen-ed requirements.
Then continue on with school throw the summer. This time take 2 computer science classes.
A schedule like this should get your through, while still allowing you a wee little bit of free time.
Keep in mind that you are going to live a very very structured life for the next few years as you work towards your degree. Sleep will become something you value, because you won't be able to do it as much as you'd like. Make sure you get 1 day off a week, or every 2 weeks. This is important, because it keeps you sane and the g/f happy.
The trick with Claire is to simply say nothing at all. After about 15 seconds of her insisting that you say something she will then connect you with a customer service representative.
I'm all for automation, but sometimes you just *have* to talk to a human-being. I have had more then one occassion where sprint billed me incorrectly. How do you have a menu option to explain every possible thing that can and does go wrong with the automated systems?

Or just use that magically delivery system known as UPS. Why reinvent the wheel here?
"The six games will be played at the classical time control and the prize fund is that roundest of big round numbers, one million dollars. (Kasparov gets half a million up front and the other half is split 60/40 winner/loser. Ka-ching! Garry is definitely paying for dinner next time.)"
End Quote.
So Garry is getting at least 700,000 just for showing up. Man I wish I were that guy.
Block Quote - "I think that regardless of the reasons why they tell you they want 600 acres - they are probably hoping to have the 600 acres donated to them so they can just use it to expand their campus. .."
Well see I would buy into this if CMU wasn't located within the City of Pittsburgh.:-)
The article talks about an electronic service where you could transmit electronic messages between roughly 25 post offices. The messages would be printed out and then hand delivered like normal mail.
Honestly I don't see how this is anything like email, which is 100% electronic.
- Why I like email? Because there's no mail man for my dog to bite.
KMFDM is awesome! They have a kinda hybrid techno / industrial sound and is a great starting point into electronic music because unlike many of the other suggested artists they have plenty of vocals.
I'm certainly not knocking any of the other suggestions, because I listen to many of them, I'm just suggesting KMFDM from personal experience. They are the band that started the ball rolling down the Electronic music hill for yours truely.
I would recommend to first buy some of the newer albums. One of the best to give you an idea about KMFDM is the album that has a bunch of symbols for the title, a skull, a bomb, and some others. I will just call it "The Symbols" album. You'll know it when you see it.
Give it a listen and if you like it dive into some of their other albums. Glory, Light, What do you know Deutchland, Angst, Nihil, XTORT, Agogo, Adios, Attak are all wonderful albums. I own just about everything KMFDM has ever produced and I can honestly say I love every song.
If you dig them, they are an excellent bridge into some of the more experimental stuff like Aphex Twin.
Hope this helps. If you want to talk further please email me at my slashdot username @ the listed URL above.
Why are people still buying these devices if they don't offer the features they want or expect out of the box?
- This is a serious question, mod as such.

Java would say why god WHY?!?!?!?!

What exactly does this device do? It lets me listen to radio stations on my computer? Or is this picking up the ham radio frequencies?
Could someone give me an overview of what exactly this is useful for?
I'm not trying to troll, I'm just a little confused about what this thing does and what it is useful for.

Well I guess that's how you solve the problem of leaked pictures. . . You post the site on slashdot, and the problem kinda works itself out.
Anyone have a mirror?
From the site -
"PLEASE NOTE: I am currently in the process of switching servers. If you notice anything funny, please email me."
I think something funny is going on.

Well I'd have to talk it over with her, but what are you offering? :-P

Ahhh I miss understood.

Well using the high number I am worth about $32.50 an hour to my company.
I don't know where you work, but I think the rest of us make far less then $100 an hour.
