The 90 days was a guestimate based on presumed Martian conditions. They for instance didn't expect the martian winds to be so effective at sweeping the solar panels clean.

When you're hurling a machine to another planet you kind of have to make assumptions about the conditions there and the Mars Rover was built to last at least 90 days in those conditions. Turns out the conditions are actually a lot better then they assumed so it's still working.

It's not a matter of under estimating it's lifetime for ass covering or gross incompetence, it's solid science.

Human history suggests that if we were to reach another planet with life that we would crush it without blinking. Don't forget we enslaved our own kind and massacred quite a few tribes and people...

It could just happen that we're the ones being wiped out by a species just as aggressive as ourselves that sees us as a potential threat. The noble aspect would just be their media selling it to their people.

I think it's mostly because of the stupidity displayed by the human race, we're too stupid to survive.

We might master the atom and fire, but we're still stupid beasts when it comes down to it, as our lifestyle clearly shows. We're still driven by basic animal urges, we just apply them to different things.

Believing in something that by it's very nature can not be proven to exist is irrational, but don't worry, I don't blame you, humans just evolved the need for a belief in a god.

    1) When you download using bittorrent you aren't also leeching but also seeding. Leeching means downloading something without uploading much/anything in place.
Furthermore, despite the fact that all music is available to me through illegal channels, I still buy loads of music, even more so then before it was feasible to download anything.
The ability to access loads of music has given me the opportunity to sample a lot more music then radio alone allowed.

    2) Piracy will deprive you of exclusivity to distribute, but so does broadcasting.

    3) Broadcasting means people have access to your work beyond your control.

  17. Gaming needs dedicated hardware on How Apple Is Beating Nintendo At Its Own Game · · Score: 1

    There. I said it.
Sure, you can play games on your IOS or Android powered phone or tablet, but the control interface on these is far from ideal.Just like you can play movies on your phone and music and games doesn't mean it's the best device for all these things.

I use a separate MP3 player because I don't want to drain my phone's battery (which oddly enough hardly lasts a day where I work but can last 5 days on a single charge at home, probably too much tower switching).
I use a separate gaming handheld (in my case a GP2X Caanoo) because my phone lacks proper inputs.

As for Apple, I care about as much about Apple as i do about Microsoft, namely diddly shit.

None of us would build a house just to let it sit empty.

Er, take a look around you at all the empty houses. Apparently some people do.

Ever hear the saying, "None of us are as dumb as all of us"? The empty houses and the government actions are all perfect examples of this. The parent is right: NONE (or, spelled out, no one) of us would build a house just to let it sit empty. It's just idiotic and wasteful to do so. But when you get large groups of people together, there's no telling what kind of stupidity will result. The larger the group, the stupider the doings. This is why we need to just break up the country into smaller regional nations. Smaller countries aren't as corrupt and stupid as larger countries (at least when there's a democratic government in place; this doesn't apply to authoritarian governments because they're run by a small group of people who don't answer to the populace).

Clearly you never heard of Belgium
