JITs have been around forever, and Moores law has been in effect since Java was released, and yet I've still not seen any reasonably complex application (such as a browser) written in Java that wasn't dog-ass slow.

There are only two decent JVMs from a speed perspective: Microsoft's and IBM's. Microsofts is obviously out of the quesiton in terms of usability for running a Java browser on Linux. IBM's is hobbled by the fact that its still living in the Java 1.x world.

Java is a great language, but you can't overlook the speed issues it still has as a client-side platform.

Also, commenting on some previous posts here...The comparsion between that RedHat and Apple attempted with regards to education is slightly flawed. Apple nearly gave machines away in an attempt to get kids to know Macs (and previously Apple IIs) better, so that when they bought their own system, it would be Apple...

Well, the problem is...RedHat sells support. By giving schools discounted support, these kids will (hopefully) learn Linux... Once they do, they don't need RedHat anymore, as RedHat is basically just a support organization! Well, currently...I'm sure we'll continue to see this change in the near future.

Mostly only the graphics designers. It seems that cool colored cases are more important than early exposure, at least based on the market!

Its a win-win situation for Linux users and VA.

The government might split Microsoft into 3 (or so) entities, but it can't strip Bill Gates of what will be his large ownership in all 3 companies. And will breaking Microsoft up instantly produce a viable competitor for Windows? Office? Internet Explorer? (Note: I'm not talking technical merit, I'm talking end-users BUYING what they know).

Very likely all three companies will do really well, just inflating Bill Gates' personal fortune into even more stratospheric heights. It happened to Rockerfeller when the government split up Standard Oil, don't be surprised to see it happen again.

You might say, well...Microsoft hasn't really innovated on the GUI front...And that is mostly true, but Aqua is not really original either. Yes, its very pretty and looks nice, but please point out a single feature it has that hasn't already appeared in some previous GUI. This isn't meant as a rant on Aqua's unoriginality, as Aqua is quite nice, and certainly riskier and better than what Microsoft is offering for Win2K and Millenium...However Apple's stupidity in trying to harrass the skin-sites really sucks.

Its not the coding that is the primary problem (as I see it). There already exists Genesis, Jet3D, Crystal Space and other Open Source engines which in most respects are not far off from even the best of commercial engines being released now. There's also now Quake1 open source, which is based upon much older technology, but a "proven" basis for even a modern game, like Half-Life. The real problem with these types of efforts is that, as far as I've seen, nobody is quite sure how "Open Source" relates to the more traditionally artistic (note: I'm not saying coding is/can't be artistic, so no flame wars please :) ) pieces of a polished game, such as modelling, texture creation, music creation, sound effects, etc.

However, faulting a company releasing a graphics card right now without a Linux driver is a bit unfair. Lets wait until XFree4 is widely available (at which point Linux will finally have something like a standard 3D driver system) before we bash anyone for lack of drivers, and this includes NVidia, 3DFX, etc as well as ATI.

The IR2 wasn't created for running Quake2. You're comparing apples to oranges...However, it does stand to reason that current and future consumer level PC cards will start beating the "big iron" for rendering of a few years ago. Yet more Moores Law in action, this time applied to the graphics processor rather than the CPU.

As much as I like Linux, Linux doesn't specifically do 3D better than any operating system. In fact, technically, you could call Windows a better 3D OS, since at least (since Win98 B) it has come with a standard 3D API (OpenGL), whereas Linux has no true standard (Mesa is a bit of a de facto standard... XFree4 should fix the whole issue, but I digress...)

Also, while Linux might get some of the big name 3D packages (Maya, etc), don't hold your breath for them to become Open Source.

So many graphics card makers ignore the NT market despite the fact that game developers almost universally use NT or now Win 2000 to develop in...Who wants to write and debug code under 98? Not me. By not supplying an OpenGL driver for NT4 and not supplying OpenGL and DirectX 7 drivers for Windows 2000, companies are shooting themselves in the foot as far as getting good developer support and optimization for their cards.

Only NVidia and 3DFX seem to really grasp this concept, which is probably why all the other card makers continue to exist only because of OEM deals where users dont really know what they are getting.
