  1. Ready to get killed by subscription elite gear. on Activision Reveals Call of Duty Subscription Plans · · Score: 1

So I pay a monthly fee and then I get what?..
-map packs: EA will have to sell map packs as a separate DLC as well. They'd be losing a ton of money if they didn't. Not everyone will subscribe.
-Analysis Tools: Big woop, maybe some pro players care about that.
-???? : HAS to be weapon mods of some kind. How else will this subscription make any sense? Take it, it'll piss off people who don't subscribe of course. And if you don't think EA would do something so dumb, just recall the battlefield 2 special forces expansion, which added weapons for only the expansion players in the original maps.

The other option is that the service offers so little difference that only a small minority of pro players buy it....what do you think is more likely?

  2. Even T-mobile affiats aren't offering on Why the Google Android Phone Isn't Taking Off · · Score: 1

Even T-mobile affiliates like iWireless (in Iowa) don't offer the G1 or myTouch. Google needs to stop relying on T-mobile and get Android phones as offerings from all national carriers. I'd love to get an android phone to replace my current sub-par MS 6.1 based HTC smartphone. Time to start flexing some muscle google!

  3. Re:Reloadable cards. on An FBI Agent's 3 Years Undercover With Identity Thieves · · Score: 5, Informative

For online purchases one-use card numbers already are available.

Bank of America has them, it's called 'Shopsafe' and it's a free feature if you have a card with them. I've used it for every web purchase now for years and it works great. You set your limit & expiration date, generate a number and your set. Easy and it limits your exposure.

(MBNA developed shopsafe and then Bank of America got it when they bought them out. Probably other companies have something similar)

  4. The best part of Vista is always ignored on Ballmer Says Vista Selling Really Well · · Score: 1

If you use Vista as a Media Center it works great. That's the best feature of Vista over XP as far as I'm concerned.

yes, I'm well aware of all the Linux alternates. I wanted to use one of them but, I couldn't be confident in the hardware support for the various HD motherboards and tuner cards I was looking at. I looked through tons of guides and they were mostly for older SD stuff.

I'm no MS fan boy by any means but, Vista MCE really is nice and is easy to use. HD recording, radio(some free or online XM), free TV guide (unlike what I'm currently paying tivo for), photos, couple games you can play with your remote, weather(plugin) and all the normal DVR stuff of course. You can rip your CD's & DVD's and also, burn off recordings to a DVD(although very slowly). One neat feature that my tivo doesn't do is that it'll show you the movies coming up(sorted various ways) and download the movie DVD cover so it's like you're browsing Blockbuster. I thought it was neat at least. Blu-Ray drives are $120-$150, as soon as they come down a bit I'll add that in too.

I'm not saying various Linux MCE programs don't have the same or similar features. I just know that for $550 (including OS,remote & HTPC case ), I built a kick ass whisper quiet 1080i HD DVR with 1 install of Vista and a quick run through the setup guide.

The one feature missing is clear QAM decoding..which didn't matter since this was for my folks and they use an antenna. I have XP or Ubuntu running on all my PC's so I'm not saying Vista is the best but, it does have at least one compelling feature that's worth checking out.

  5. Even with a DVR I still watch ads on Youngsters Skip DVR Ads Less Than Seniors · · Score: 1

If I'm planning on buying something already I'll watch them. I find myself rewinding to catch cell phone ads now since my plan is almost up. A couple months ago when it was time to buy a car I did the same thing.

If a commercial is funny or advertises something cool I've never seen before then I'll watch it, otherwise, only if I'm thinking about buying already. Because I have a DVR I probably watch more ads that matter to me. Otherwise, I'd be in the other room or, it'd mute the volume.

  7. What a bogus review of yahoo... on Music Recommendation Engines Compared · · Score: 1

I've used yahoo for a while now and it's clear to me that they really didn't spend much time setting it up or trying it out. After configuring your genres and actually rating music for more than a couple minutes you can tune it to be anything you want.

First off, they have one of the largest libraries available so, already it was a clear winner for me because of the selection.

No community? I get recommendations from friends "influencers" all the time and I can listen other users customized stations.
All mainstream music? Not unless you just signed up 10 minutes ago. Plus custom moods, ratings per artist, CD or individual songs, listening "moods" you can customize, custom radio stations either to genre or to any artist. Also, I use it a lot to find new music videos/reviews/band biographies(not just pictures). I like to keep my station with a mix of rated and unrated artists so I'm constantly finding someone new.

"Best radio player out there" and yet it gets 5 out 10. It's not perfect (infrequent commercials for the free version). For $3 a month you can get just the radio station w/ unlimited song skipping and a high quality stream, commercial free. Every other service has similar pay services so it's not exactly alone in that respect. It's a polished music service that works great for me at least.

The good thing about Eva is that the first 18 or so episodes are of such high quality that it can really demonstrate to the newbie animie watchers just how good it can be(and build an audience). When I was in college an animie club showed me Eva, Bebop and Macross 7 and I was hooked.

Sure Eva gets all weird and dumb at the end but there are a lot of good episodes before that happens :)

Hopefully they show the movie too but that would probably be a seperate deal....I don't think they've even shown the bebop movie yet?

I think that you're right on the mark. 2 years ago when I graduated college and the economy was poor, I still saw a large number of jobs that wanted 3-5+ years of development experience with some huge array of qualifications that no one could honostly have.

Mean while, the number of entry level jobs was virtually zero. It didn't make sense that you'd have 10 jobs at 90K a year and yet not a single one at 30-40k. I count myself forunate that I did find a good job SE job but I know a lot of good college grads that moved into management because the engineeering entry level jobs just weren't there (not just SE, EE too). Now that they economy is better, could they move out of management and into engineering? Probably not because most HR managers wouldn't consider someone who doesn't have experience.

Most companies just aren't willing to spend a dime training a new employee it seems or to hire someone who doesn't have a perfect match to the skills needed. ... better to just outsource I guess.

  25. Number of testing stations? on How Motherboards Are Made · · Score: 1

The article leaves me curious as to the number of testing stations they have for any given production line?

It seems like they can really pump out the boards at break neck speeds but once that's over, each individual board is tested for electrical connectivitiy, then later for complete functionality and finally, the 3D stress test in the chamber. I can only guess that they have an enormous number of test stations or maybe it's that they don't run the board production lines 24x7 but the testing stations are?
