    It's a shame so few companies want to develop accessories like 'skins' for Apple products. If they did, you could just buy something to cover the screen while it's in your pocket! Oh well.

    Incidentally, I see a similar trend in web-surfing. Some guy surfing through interesting/funny/lame sites while a group spectate him or her.

    Because it's so much more interesting web-surfing on your own! If people want to see the same lame/funny sites, then doing it in a group seems perfectly logical.

    I've also known people who prefer watching others play games, probably because they prefer passive entertainment to active. For some games it even makes sense, when it's the kind of game where you just want to see what happens when you do various things. ("What happens if you set the police car on fire?") It's just like people getting together to do stupid things in real life, but less dangerous. The only time it starts becoming weird is when people are getting together to watch something more repetitive like Tetris or something.

    Personal responsibility could conceivably be extended to justify murder, with "well, he didn't have a gun and didn't defend himself when I shot him dead, so it's his fault he's dead".

    That's the most bizarre twisting of the phrase 'personal responsibility' I have ever heard. Bravo. Most sane people actually use it to mean standing behind your actions, not "you are responsible for everything that happens to you."

    I believe that in conversation, people often emphasize the word 'OR' to mean 'XOR'. Most people haven't heard of 'XOR', but when they hear someone say "you can have A OR B" then that means they have to choose one. I suspect this notation/terminology was used in the book precisely because the target demographic wasn't programmers or engineers.

  25. 'enhanced' == 'fixed' ? on Giant Mecha News · · Score: 3, Interesting

    Does 'enhanced' mean that they fixed the jitter in the video sources of Eva? One of my biggest disappointments with the DVDs before was the incredible amount of jitter just before/after scene changes. I found it incredibly distracting, especially on the (large number of) slowly panning scenes.

    I played for a long time with trying to make digital copies without the jitter by using various stabilizing plugins for VirtualDub or other software, but to little avail (most were targeted at shaky-handed video camera operators).

    If they've fixed the jitter I would really consider picking up this set; I've found Eva to be one of my favorite media ever, and usually try getting anyone who hasn't seen it to watch with me whenever I go through it again.
