it seems like web developers are now in the game development pot

Flash was the realm of web designers/web developers and is now one of the most widespread game development platforms.

Moreover, Flash's scripting language, Actionscript is based on ECMAScript which is in turn based on JavaScript, so Flash game developers have in fact been creating games in Javascript for some time now.

Flash Actionscript = JavaScript (although Actionscript 3.0 now resembles Java more)

So yes, Javascript is not just ready, but has in fact been one of the de facto languages for creating quality (fun and addicting!) (Flash) games in the past few years.

Hey bro. Yeah, regarding the UNDP statistics, it's a bit skewed because the gap between the rich and the poorest of the poor is so large that those numbers don't really paint a complete picture.

are you really saying that saving someone's life in one of the poorest country in the world, with the ONLY technology available is no news

Sadly, yes, because it happens on a daily basis and one gets inured to it, and I've heard much worse horror stories than the condition that patient was in from family and friends who are doctors over here.

Anyway, I guess it's news to me that these kind of things and this kind of tech usage is news for you guys :)

    Thanks for the UNDP links!

What is this, a "The Onion" article?

    Are you guys kidding?

Why is this news and a front page article?

I mean we've been using SMS/txting on a regular basis for over 10 years now here in the Philippines! It's our primary means of communication as it's so much cheaper than voice calls.

"Indonesia Shariah law declares that husband may now divorce wife by texting 'I divorce you' thrice" is news.

This is like putting "Employee at McDonalds cooks burger" as front page news

    wtf.

Not to sound like a troll, but what's so amazing with this incident? How is any more amazing than sending urgent instructions via fax?

Cost of SMS is not even a factor coz those guys are doctors from FIRST WORLD countries, and as for tech in the bush, setting up cel towers is way cheaper than laying down miles of cable which could be stolen by thieves looking to sell metal to scrap heaps.

Wtf, even poor folk shanty-town dwellers here in Manila regularly SMS with their family back in far-flung remote mountains in the provinces.

Wtf why is this news? Here in the Philippines, overthrowing entire governments with txt messages is like a boring everyday thing.

I wish more game companies would provide the kind of fan service Valve and Epic have with the bonus packs in the Unreal series (+tons of official/endorsed mods like in the GOTY editions) and new features and content Valve has been providing with stuff like the Team Fortress 2 updates (new game modes, maps, achievements, etc (and hopefully they release bonus content for Left 4 Dead down the line!))

Morrowind had some really nice free downloadable content plugins

Some of the "for sale" Oblivion DLC weren't as neat and should have just been given away for free to fans (I'm looking at you, horse armor!)

I wish Bethesda would be more involved and actively participate in the modding community and dip once in a while with free official mods of their own again. What's even more irritating is the way Bethesda leaves tons of bugs left unfixed, and it's up to the mod community to patch these errors up (see the unofficial Oblivion patches which fixed tons of bugs Bethesda left alone)

As for if DLC release timing "too soon" as MTV asks: unless they are buggy no such thing as too soon if these DLC are side-quests that add to the main game experience. Dusting up dormant game copies you've finished just to add a few perks when you've finished the game and have an uber-character isn't as fun

Also, you could consider porting your game to Flash. Actionscript 3 syntax is very close to Java now so porting shouldn't be as painful as porting from Java to C/C++.

If you don't want to pony up for the Flash or Flex IDEs, you can use the free Flashdevelop AS Editor/IDE + JDK + free Flex SDK combo.

You won't be able to publish for older phones with that combo tho but it should run on Flash 10 which will be running on upcoming phones (I think it was demoed on T-Mobiles G1 Android phone at Adobe Max earlier this week. Nokia and Sony-Ericsson's pretty chummy too, so expect Flash 10 to appear on future handsets ;)

  18. Try hooking up with Ad agencies on How To Find a Mobile Games Publisher? · · Score: 2, Interesting

An emerging revenue model is advergaming.

You could hook up with an ad agency or whatever brand/sponsor you manage to negotiate with, and then have them license or buy the game from you as a viral advergame and brand it with a product.

It's a pretty good business model and brings in money for some game developers/agencies.

Essentially, instead of selling the game to individual users, it's the sponsor/brand who "buys" or licenses it and signs your paycheck, and then the players get to download and spread it for free.

You can either sell the rights to the game to a sponsor, or have them license it for branding/skinning but you retain the rights. It's all up to whatever you negotiate.

The nice thing about this that you don't have to worry about sales management anymore. It's kinda win-win for the player too. Sponsors get their branding out, players get their game for free :) And "piracy" becomes everyone's friend ;) The more the game spreads, the happier everyone becomes!

It's what we did for some browser and mobile phone Flash games we made.

    Best of luck! :)

The MS thing was a compromise for governments who inisited on computers that run XP. Basically, it's more of "hey, if you want to run a different OS on the XO, it's your machine". The OLPC folks aren't the ones maintaining the XP version.
