"We need educational programs that expose students to equal amounts of technology and art. They should learn to program even as they study Michelangelo, rhetoric and recursion, algorithms and architecture." Do you think this would lead to better, more innovative, socially aware videogames?
I don't know about video games, but it sounds like it would lead to better, more innovative, socially aware people.

Ditto. That's why I got the lifetime subscription. I was in early. It's been a few years. And that cost has amortized way below the monthly fee. The subscription is just a choice. I don't why people have to obsess on it.

Don't like monthly fees? Add in the cost of the lifetime subscription. Make a purchase decision based on that total.

There is a HD DirectTivo -- it works with an already-mpeg-compressed stream. There is a "standalone" HD Tivo that has been shown, but I don't think is planned for sale. It can handle OTA ATSC (also an already-mpeg-compressed stream).

There is no "standalone" HD Tivo with component inputs for the technical reasons described in the grandparent post.

Yes, OTA HDTV cards work under Myth. Again the key is working with the compressed data.

As others have noted it's too much data for a PC & consumer affordable, real-time, HD-resolution MPEG encoding is a long way off.

What you need is a souce with firewire output. Firewire output has been "mandated" for cable boxes soon. The firewire stream is already mpeg compressed.

I want it too. But OTA and non-scrambled cable isn't good enough. I want something that can control my (next) HD cable box.

We need HD firewire support for MythTV. Supposedly, firewire output from cable boxes has been mandated for 4/1/04.

    HD is great.

DirectTV will have an HD DirectTivo box very soon, if it's not out yet. There will not be a HD Tivo box for cable for a relatively long time.

I'd suggest waiting for the HD DirectTivo box to come out, then sign up for DirectTv. The best deals and newest boxes always go to new subscribers.
