However, if there's no cost to consuming bandwidth it does create shortages. As we've learned in economics 101 if the price is too low for a scarce commodity, you get a shortage. Using the bandwidth to consume it all doesn't make much sense. If TWC puts in meters and finds out that traffic drops in half, they can get a lot more customers online for the same pipes, costing less per customer.

Seems a social species that has members that act in their own best interest all the time would simply implode. We're bound to others so it's not surprising that some of us would chose the net gain solution instead of the self gain solution. I don't think it's at all rational to choose the self gain solution despite the articles insistence that anything else is irrational.

People who screw over others for a small benefit damage society and weaken our species, those are the irrational ones.

Abandonware does exist. It's not relevant to this discussion though.

Various games and books go out of print. Sometimes they become difficult to find or expensive. Is the original publisher harmed if I pirate it instead of buying it for a lot of money? Probably not.

Then again, most IP is a load of BS IMHO. Would the world be a worse place if anyone could make a chrono trigger sequel? Probably not. Consumers would get used to looking for the original brand names if they cared about authentic.
