  2. horrible language on Human Genome Contaminated With Mycoplasma DNA · · Score: 5, Informative

This article was horribly written. They go between using terms with their literal meaning and using terms in metaphorical creative language but do not differentiate between the two using context at all. It's an incredibly confusing read. Actual ancestral human DNA is not contaminated with actual mycoplasma DNA sequences.

Here's what I gather is going on:
Researchers took a sample of human DNA and sequenced it, while doing so the sample was contaminated with DNA from mycoplasma (possibly from bacteria in the lab or on the researchers themselves). While sequencing it, the data is assumed to be a representation of pure human DNA (which would be incorrect). Other researchers then use this data set as a reference to compare other human DNA samples they sequenced themselves. They use this to test gene expression and so forth. So if their DNA samples show gene expression for mycoplasma they would incorrectly think it was normal human gene expression. What they did is use software to strip the mycoplasma DNA data from the original data set (that had both human and mycoplasma DNA sequences) to only use the actual human DNA data as a reference. The biological contamination was first in the original sample that was tested, and then the contamination referred to elsewhere is computational data "contamination." This is the software they are referring to as antivirus software and virtual immune system (which isn't antivirus software or similar to a biological immune system, it's DNA data filtering software).

These people really need to think about what they're trying to say before puking up jargon salad on the readers' brains.

  11. Re:No Positrons, No Anti-matter on Antihelium Discovered By STAR · · Score: 1

Without positrons (anti-electrons) orbiting the nucleus, these are just high energy anti-particles. Technically anti-matter, but not really available for interesting study. What would be much more interesting would be molecular anti-hydrogen, complete with positron bonding. Then you could test many properties of anti-matter. But cooling and storing is still a major problem. This is an interesting discovery, but we're no closer to really understanding anti-matter because of it (or, for that matter, having warp drive.)

Not really sure why this got modded up... There's no such thing as "technically" antimatter vs "really" antimatter. Helium is still helium even without the electrons (elements are designated by their number of protons or anti-protons and has nothing to do with their electrons). It just has an ionic charge (ie. plasma, alpha particle). Anti-helium is not an exception. It IS really available for interesting study or you wouldn't be reading the article. And making it a "whole" atom by adding positrons would REMOVE it from being available for interesting study on the many properties of anti-matter as it would then move (as it would no longer have a charge and thus would not be contained by the magnetic fields) and interact with normal matter and be destroyed. We ARE closer to really understanding antimatter because we now have verifiable evidence that it exists at the rates of generation that we thought it would.

You might not think that oil amount can affect much... but you'd be wrong. We had a biology project in my freshman year of college. We had a large fish tank, about 40-60 gallons or so, that housed a freshwater lake ecosystem (in balance). We did our studies and observations for lab off of it. For the last couple experiments they had us simulate pollution on the environment. They put in 1 tiny piece of cat food (nitrates), within a week the whole damn thing was decimated. About 1 mL volume of pollutant in a volume of about 150-225 L, so about 0.000004% to 0.000006% of the volume. Everything was dead. This is only off from your estimates by a decimal point. Keep that in mind. The numbers may make it seem mundane or negligible but it has a rather severe effect that you don't seem to be aware of. (and yes I'm aware that cat food = crude oil, but the toxicity for the oil is likely much higher than cat food nitrates)
