The good thing about firefox is that it pushed for standardization. If all becomes chromium, then Google essentially takes control of all the webbrowser aspects. When IE was the defacto standard, we took about 10 years to get out of that mess.
Actually that is my strategy too. I run linux and my life is essentially on my laptop. If you can read my camera, I am already way more fucked than I would like. At this point, I don't care if they take a picture of me.
Don't you know that the invisible hand of the economy will magically build infrastructure overnight much cheaper than any government would? The only reason it doesn't right now is because of all these regulation and taxes that scares the invisible hand away!
That's how the market works! You do nothing and everything happens perfectly and in time!
> It's been my experience that when you get great software developers together it creates demand for more software developers. I don't think a simple supply and demand model works.
Agreed. It seems we are currently in a place where there are so many projects to pursue that the demand might just accomodate to the supply. I don't buy that argument here.
It always baffles me when people apply simple models to make their claim. Especially in economics, I keep hearing (even from economics graduates) things like, if we deregulate a market, prices will drop because the optimal point gets better. It is as if they never attend a game theory class and heard of Braess' paradox and of price of anarchy...
With all the improvements that are being made to this wonderful site one of the biggest flaws remains. Can we add a feature to slashdot that can help filter out political and social issues?
That way those that don't want to read political/social articles will stop commenting on every single one of them that it is not news for nerds.
In the meantime, this nerd will keep on enjoying your articles without the distraction of useless comments.
I don't take public transportation in the US. And I am French. I love public transportation, that is the favorite part of my trips to France. (I know, i am weird.)
In the US public transportation just does not work for most usage. I work in a university and I live on the main street that goes there. There is no bus to get me there. If I walk to the closest bus stop, I am already over half way to my office. Therefore taking the bus does not make sense, I'll drive.
When I was working for OSU, I would frequently choose to walk rather than take the bus. And I would arrive before the bus did. Because the bus was infrequent and was making a ridiculous loop to gather people. Though, they need to do that because not enough people take the bus. otherwise, we would have more frequent and more direct lines.
I'd love to bike to work, but that is not practical as well. Drivers here (Charlotte) have no idea how to behave around bikes, and bikes are frequently taking the road in the wrong direction which makes biking an extreme sport.
You need a critical mass of users for PT to start being efficinet. In the US, we are not there. Not sure we will ever be in most places.
While getting people to recycle in their home is an issue. It is not an issue a microbiologist can help with, a politician or an activist maybe, but a scientist, likely not. Different people can contribute to the problem in different way. Because PET is not the number one problem in recycling does not mean it should not be addressed or improved.
> Also, other than Microsoft employees, I have never met someone that has one of those XBox things.
Really? Do you only know boring people ? MS sold about 35 million XBox 1st gen, 85 million XBos 360 and 20 millions XBox One. [1] That figure includes 12 millions XBox One in the North America. That is about 10% of US Household. So in all likelyhood, there are multiple on your block.
Please, do not put all my fellowmen(and women) in the same basket. The quote comes from "a French Republican" not from a reasonable person! "Les Republicains" are known to have a ridiculous police state slant. Because of them we did not have the equivalent of Miranda rights until recently. I am not sure that prosecution has to share police reports and investigative reports to the defense lawyer. And remember that in France, the defense can not really conduct its own investigation.
There always were game that were only available on some platform. I'd love to play Splatoon, but I am not buying a wii-u just for that game.
The question for me is, do I find enough to be entertained in the few hours a feww I have to dedicate to playing video games. I spent christmass playing shadowrun:dragonfall and I picked up the previous iteration of the game. I played rogue legacy, dust and bastion last year.
Yesterday I was playing an other game of civ5, which probably will keep me busy another week. Certainly the recent xcom and shadowrun will keep me busy until summer.
Do I need 5000 games available? No I probably only need 10 interesting in a year, which will morph into 5 I actually play through.
I do believe him. Salaries in Silicon Valley are ridiculous, probably because the cost of living is just as ridiculous. Actually for the location, $200k/year for a senior developer is on the low side if you include health care, stock options, end of year bonus,... I know multiple people that make more than that.
actually it really depends on application. In the Machine Learning community, half-precision is quite popular! For all graphics purpose single precision is what you need. Only scientific computing really need double precision.
So I have no idea how these things work in the US. But it seems reasonable to run a background check and then decide based on the outcome of that check, eventually talking again with the prospective employee.
Now if the decision is made automatically "there is something in your criminal record => sorry" then it is ridiculous. But "You drove drunk and cause 10 people to die => sorry you won't drive my taxi" seems fine; while "You peed at 3am => no taxi" is unreasonable.
So if you are on the same network as the machine you are connecting to, VNC is a reasonable option. With higher latency and lower bandwidth, it can get really painful. The advantage of X is that you could only have a single application running over the network which tends to be much less consuming in network resource. Also that application would just integrate in your desktop environment perfectly.
I've seen college graduates who don't even know who Knuth is.
To be frank, no one really cares who Knuth is. Knuth infused computer science to the point where many classic algorithms are Knuth's and we just don't mention it. The shuffle algorithm is a good example of that, it is so classic that it seems to have existed since the dawn of time. The same effect happens with string search, most people will refer it as "string search", or "linear string search". Only people interested in the problem call it KMP; almost never I hear it called Knuth-Morris-Pratt.
Knuth is a legend, he is part of computer science.
In particular I hate that title because it is completely unclear because it has two numerals in the first three words. "7 pictures of dogs you will love" is fine. But "7 Swift 2 features are amazing" is hard to parse. "Seven Swift 2 features are amazing" is MUCH easier to parse.
It always amazes me that many people write without thinking of how the text will be read.
How else can I connect to those projectors if not VGA?
Are you serious? I have not seen a projector without DVI in the last 10 years. All the projectors that I use have a bazillion connectors. You can connect VGA, RCA, DVI, HDMI and other stuff I am not even sure what are. You can even connect from the network and broadcast images with virtually no lost of quality.
I don't see the problem. The guy has won European tournaments in the last three year. He is not the world champion, but he is certainly no joke. Beating him shows significant improvement in the quality of the machine playing Go. And it certainly is an important step in getting asian players to accept to play against the machine.
I am no expert in the US legal system. But my understanding is that at any location, federal, state and city law apply. There might be federal regulation and additional state regulation for any particular thing. For instance, in North Carolina, you need your car to be inspected yearly for various regulation check.
Is there a particular reason operating a flying vessel would be different? Don't you feel it is legal for a state to put regulations on what you can use as a commercial landing zone through the state congress?
Exactly, it reminds me of the bad old (clearly not good old) "I am listening to Britey Spears - Baby One More Time.mp3" we use to see every 3 minutes on IRC.
The problem with encrypting emails is "who performs the encryption/decryption?" If the gmail server performs the crypto, then it is pretty much useless. If the client performs the encryption/decryption, then you get two problems: key management, and loss of service. If the server does not have the full text, then you can not use server side server, indexing,.... which have become standard tools.
This looks like bad news.

That's MY complain! Now that these things are getting fixed. What are we goign to complain about ? We are gogni to need creativity in our complaints!

You can not compress such a piece of art. The real cinephiles will see the difference with their gold-plated HDMI cables!

No one gives a shit...
There are plenty of inconsistent pronunciations in English. I wouldn't rag on people who pronounce schedule with a "sh" sound.
I am pretty sure it is pronounced with a "sh" sound in the UK.
