Price out an RC airplane like those flown at TopGun. These are top of the line planes, true, but even a lower priced one can run into hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
Hobies, if you get into them far eough, cost money, sometimes lots of money. I'm restoring a late 60's Triumph TR 6 that I bought because it was in great shape to start with. You would not believe how much I've put into it to date.
I love SF and Baen was on of the first sites I found when looking for e books. His business modell was a bit wierd I thought. His idea was to offer works by real, popular, published authors free so that you could sample their works and buy other books if you liked what you read.
It worked. I discovered authors I had not read before and authors I had forgotten. I read what's free and bought what wasn't. Seems to work.
Now other sites like Tor.com are using the same model.
What I don't agree with and just can't understand is the Kindle/DRM issue. Wouldn't it make a modicum of sense to allow reading of Amazon books on a device other than a Kindle or i Phone/i Pod? Wouldn't they sell more books? I don't believe they're making a lot of profit on the Kindle and when they make a book available for reading and sell it, not having to pay for distribution because it's over the interweb, it basically costs nothing. Why not make more money? Ponderous man, ponderous.
This has been thought of before. I can't remember the source but one car maker wanted to make the car emit the engine sounds of a Ferrari V 12.
Sounds like
My oldest grandchild is now 7 and has been using the 'puter since he was 5. He knows website addresses that he likes by heart. Get them as young as possible!
"Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini
What I think is unappreciated or underappreciated about abominations like Mussolini is that nothing they did was a chance, coincident, or accident. They understood very well what they were working for and where it was leading and accomplished it by a series of carefully planned maneuvers, each one of which had its own excuse, its own official story. Usually that story says that this is necessary, good for the country, designed to safeguard the people, intended to stop a national enemy, or that lack of patriotism is the only reason to oppose it. Above all, there is a distinctive pattern to it and once recognized, it is easy to spot, even in its early stages.
Hmmmm, sounds an awful lot like our last president doesn't it?
Anyone who thinks that what transpired on Bush's watch was entirely coincidental is an arse.
"The fact that students today almost always write for an audience (something virtually no one in my generation did) gives them a different sense of what constitutes good writing.
OK, I'm 62 and I really don't care for TV (well yes I do have SOME favorite programs that I watch and I only watch about 15 hours of TV a week. I find most television boring as hell and sometimes multitask by watching and reading a book). But, I do play Some Games, and agree that they keep my mind sharp while most people my age watch mindless pap.
As you remember me saying I Am Older than Dirt. I have socks that are older than most of you.
I have 4 adult sons that are all married with children, the oldest with 4, the 2, 2, 1. They all play games frequently. Their wives are all down with it, because they don't let it get in the way of husbanding and parenting. They watch TV infrequently, so the time they would spend watching TV is the time the would rather spend playing a game.
Just ask Cory Doctorow who makes a pretty good living from his books even though most (if not all) are available for free download at his website Craphound.com.Not to mention all the writers that make their works freely available for download at Baen Books free library.

The Falcon is a DARPA vehicle that looks a lot more practical.

Its received a good review from a number of sites including FSR.com
Actually, I don't trust anyone with the last name "Murdoch" to report the news fairly!
"I've got one word to say to you Benjamin, Plastic"
Guns keep them that way
Therefore if someone likes it it must be good.
