I realise the rules for operating in a CTAF, the bottom line is that you do not make calls during the actual takeoff run (Backtracking and rolling calls dont count) or once on final. As you said a call upon reaching 500ft is a good idea.
We all have to make the appropriate calls but not during times of high workload such as these, that was the point I was making. Remember, these calls are standard for every flight and routinely made so they are totally unlike a random telephone conversation, which will require constant thought and different replies every time.
As a glider pilot I find the constant unecessary chatter on the CTAF very annoying. Power pilots tend to crap on for so damn long that I have to make my donwind call as late as the base leg, because of them rabbiting on. I cant hang/go around in a glider unless very lucky!
Glider pilots have to get every circuit right every time!
I make plenty of calls when in there is power traffic in the circuit area, because most power pilots simply have terrible lookout, as evidenced by the deaths of quite a few glider pilots when mid airs ooccour with the power plane coming from below the glider in its blind spot.
Not eneryone is cut out to be a pilot, and not everyone could be trained to be able to talk whilst driving. That said I can manage quite comfortably, but lets face it some folk are not safe to walk and chew gum at the same time. If we got them off the road, we would probably have 50% less traffic(-:
If there is no other local traffic we do not have to make turning base or final calls (Austrailian regs), they are suggested not mandatory. Power pilots make them regardless of whether there is any traffic, blocking the CTAF for long periods.
It is extrememly doubtful any pilot worth his salt (I certainly would not)would make radio calls whilst taking off or when about to land. Such calls are made well before critical periods of a flight-as they may be a distraction.
Maybe they are in the USA. However the rest of the world is not loked into the thrall of US telco's. Glance at an atlas, or maybe google earth. See the large portion that is not the US? Here pre paid are the bulk of locked phones.
I recently looked at new phones, but the iphone was a none starter, directly due to the restrictions placed on it by apple and their app store.
I bought a Win mobile phone and am very happy with it. Lots more available apps, a large part of which are free.
Whilst I agree that upgrading the OS is a bad idea the suggestion that one needs to reinstall every year is just plain wrong. I have 200 systems that have been running the same image for 5 years with no slowdowns or problems. You must be doing something wrong.
Oh and creating a ghost image of your fresh install is a much better option than reinstalling timewise. I have not needed to install for years. Having the patches to make XP loaded drive boot in any machine you like helps.

Computers for the last 18 years. In all that time I have spent more time on frustrating wierd problems on 8 AMD systems than I have on all of the thousands of Intel systems maintained at the same time. I would never spec an AMD for anyone. This includes latest AMD systems.
As I am responsible for purchasing AMD is out og the question.
Corporates dont have time to stuff around with crap chipsets. It is the AMD chipsets that universally suck ass, and corporates dont have time to sort out erratic systems, they have to just work and Intel do generally. In the last 5 years I had less than 1% failiure rate on intel systems.
I have found the latest GPS much better at getting a lock inside my house. I have A Garmin 72 and a compact flash GPS which cannot get a lock inside. My newer Leadtek bluetooth unit and IPAQ 312 both get a lock easily. I believe they use the sirf star chipset.
We waht ridgidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty thanks. If you keep causing trouble I will get the union of philosophers and other thinking people onto you.

Meaning, the last priority is to communicate.
