Why is it outdated thinking and what changes do you have in mind?
Remember that version numbers are mostly intended for developers (to keep track of code revisions), not end-users. My only gripe with version numbers would be that every developer seems to use their own definition of what's a major or a minor revision, rendering the decimal point moot.
But in the end, an arbitrary number is just that: an arbitrary number — and if you rather don't want to deal with that, Manjaro may be a distro for you.
If your system's incapable of proper leap second handling and major changes are considered too costly? Then quit barking up the wrong tree and switch to TAI! UTC-based time is intended for humans, y'know.
In the age of information, ignorance is a choice. Thanks to the internet, you have instant access to the very same information as your doctor has. And it's pretty naive to assume that Big Pharma's marketing department isn't already in bed with you doctor.
Do you really think that it would make any difference? On this tiny speck of land where prescription drug ads are banned, ads are just as obnoxious, but screaming "There's a NEW drug for $CONDITION, ask YOUR doctor about it!" instead.
...may also be a contributing factor. I reckon that being able to install emulators, thus having thousands of pirated oldsk00l games on tap, does hurt the willingness to pay for games.
It's even sadder than that: The extra cost of hiring people who were competent enough to recognise and mitigate the risks, would've likely been less than $580k. In these harsh economic times, it's really a race to the bottom.
When I read in the HSE publication that the hapless person "was electrocuted when his forehead made contact with the 415V live terminals of the second unit", I immediately facepalmed. The apparent lack of safety awareness truly boggles my mind.
If he was not a competent person then he had no business attempting the work.
The sad truth is, that the incompetent don't realise that they're not competent at the job.
And spend 10 minutes on hold, having to explain the situation to some dime-a-dozen call center serf who's not competent for the job and unfamilliar with the neighborhood...
Why do have my phone set up to hang onto wifi until it's completely gone and to heavily restrict data use when on cellular? Not because I have a crappy data plan - on the contrary.
It's all about battery life: pushing data across a flakey wifi link still consumes less enery than using [234]G. A function that tries to 'enhance your user experience' at the expense of battery life defeats its purpose, as nothing is as user-experience-killing as a low battery warning.
A RPi would actually be overkill for most IoT applications. A board like the Carambola would fit the bill better, for less. (while consuming less power and having on-board wifi as a bonus)
Some perspective is needed here:
We're talking about almost-a-decade-old hardware running a current linux version. Yet it's still fast enough to resume within 5 seconds, boot in 45 seconds, start libreoffice in 4 seconds, IOW: still quite usable
My $200 says you can't run Mavericks on a (similar vintage!) PowerBook G4 with the same usability...
I can understand the need for 4.2" - 5" screens from a 'sausage finger and less-than-20/20-vision perspective'. But that leaves us geek girls horribly disenfranchised by the industry!
I'd rather have the same amount of pixels stuffed in a 3" max. (yes, THREE inch) screen. Everything larger feels as completely unnecessary bulk and only makes the design more prone to breakage. And... you need to be extremely 'gifted' to stuff a Galaxy Note in your bra!
Yes, there are some activities that work better with more physical screen space and in those cases anything less than 10" is cramped. But I already have a device for that; it's called a tablet. Horses for courses, DUH
Navteq. Consistently putting my house in the wrong street since 1991
(despite complaints before map reporter and many (completely ignored) map reports over the past 8 years) (Yes, I know that map makers put in small deliberate errors as a 'watermark' to foil competitors copying their data. But having to explain the DHL van driver where my house is over and over again really gets annoying!)
They didn't cancel, they postponed it to April 1st*. And in March they may postpone it again, ad infinitum...
It's just a way to cancel it for now, but still being able to resume on short notice;-)
*) No that's not a joke. The biggest joke will come after the next term! (When voters will elect, as a reaction on the current government, even bigger clowns into power.)

Ok, why don't you build something (on a $20 budget) that can inconspicuously tap my wired keyboard, then?
...ducks quack in different dialects as well. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk/...

DC is just safer to work with
Nope. Not at power densities that are common in data centers; you're merely exchanging one risk (of shock) for another (increased arc flash risks).

Build infrastructure where cyclists are not a mere afterthought, instead - and drunk cyclists become a non-issue.
I'm all ears for a job in audiology.
You can take the PARSE VAR statement from my cold dead hands ;-)

Newsflash! RPi is not the only kid in town!
Quit whining and start exploring the market for a board that suits your needs. Sheesh.
Hey, it's not my problem that Apple dropped PPC support with Snow Leopard *smirk*

My antique Latitude D600 needs a whopping 5 seconds to wake up, which is waaaay too long
So yeah... How much more improvement do you need?
That largely depends on drivers, IOW: the willingness of hardware vendors to do things right.
The volume industry is driven by fashion, not function.
Well, isn't it ironic that the more fashion-conscious end of the market gets the raw deal?
