It is my belief that in the near future, as local news gets boughten by bigger companies and scraped to market the corps. product under the established brand. And those who didn't are just riped off by Google, and print becomes unprofitable. That the enfisis will be on News Providers, and not News Papers, even though I imagine they will be virtually the same thing. Much like how Record Companies really need to become Music Companies. Both make sense because they allow for pooled resources and collective bargaining and greater differentiation and all that noise.
In my area our local paper got bought by a big corp. and they slashed the local reporters and just brought in content from other "assets" they owned. Readership dropped like a rock. The same trend has been followed in hundreds of markets and the results are the same. More of the failings in newspapers could be blamed on the significant drop in quality in the last decade then the web. I know this because several print weeklies that focus only on local news have been popping up, in a time when these are supposed to be dying because the value of news is what drives the market, not the medium. There has been a showing of individual Bloggers, but they can't do the reporting, they need the pooled resources of a news room.
Newspapers are paper and gasoline-based dinosaurs This is what is causing their demise..... But their dependence on paper and gasoline to move all this paper makes them irrelevant nowdays.
Thats very ignorant really. News papers are agency's who hire staff to research and write stories to market. The preferred medium of distribution was, and is, paper. That is changing.
Your understanding of the "NEWS" industry, not to be confused with the "paper" industry, is just plainly wrong. Because one aspect of an industry changes people like you hit the streets shouting the end is near. Yes a lot of companies who specialized in type writers are gone, some who focused on a broader approach(IBM) are alive and well.
Tell me, What does the magic "web" do that a local paper who puts their site online isn't now doing? Oh E-bay and Craigslist are nice, but they have serious quality control issues, Spam and shady dealings are rampant, and they are impossible to use for finding jobs, or local trades people to do work and about 100 other services.
In national and world Web has local news beat, but almost every paper, including the big guys, took a lot of these stories from the wire anyways.
And where would you go for your local stories? CNN, BBC? I doubt it. Blogs? Don't make me laugh, I haven't seen a local blog that can even partially compare in nitch area like local arts to the paper. Even if you live in a big city things impacting your community would barely make Google news, and good luck navigating 12 different blogs for wildly different stories, plus blogs are biased as fuck.
Do you have any idea where the big agencies like BBC, CNN and Google news get their stories, do you think it's their agents scouring the world? They take them from the wire like everyone else. Who makes the stories on the wire? Local "Dinosaurs."
I would like to know who you expect to write your news after the "dinosaurs" are gone. I would love for it to be bloggers. but quite frankly they don't seem to be up to the task. News agencies aren't going anywhere but they may have to axe their printing plants.
Hardly, unless you like to get your news pulled out of a bloggers ass. Information Providers are alive and well. Transitions are rough, but 3 years of stagnating revenue vs. 300 years of increasing doesn't indicate anything is dying.
I always wondered if the book having more words then are necessary, and having Baroque in the title, was some kind of sick, elaborate joke that no one gets but him.
If you heat cold water it becomes lukewarm, a state of water that is considered by scientists to be the most boring and unappealing there is. Instead you should heat hot water until you have some supercritical water, which is considered the most "bad-ass" and "fucking awesome" state of water there is by scientists with balls.
I suppose you could waste your time heating the under preforming cold water up to par with all the other water, but I think we should allow water that has shown greater aptitude in heat retention the chance to excel and not be limited by it's colder classmates.
I guess you'd be an advocate for no water left behind?
OK, OK, OK, First off, That robot looked nothing like Wall-E, Second Wall-E was based on robot designs we are capable of making now, so the similarity's are not that striking. Treads: Easy to build and practical, used in most designs except Asimo and Big Dog. Stereo eyes: useful and also integrated into a lot of designs. The big center box: holds batteries and CPU's, though doesn't compact shit. Johnny-5 looked more like this robot then Wall-E, but both are based on real science, J5 was more down to earth then the cartoon who had way to many degrees of freedom without actuators to make me comfortable.
Why not? I give out my passwords to crap like e-bay all the time, to friends who want to sell and to other sites that require membership. It's no big deal.
Honestly, checking someones email is about as morally wrong as reading their diary. Sure it's incredibly rude if you get caught but hardly in the realm of some evil raping of personal space.
really? hmm... I always figured they used inexperienced troops because they knew it was going to be a royal cluster fuck of a blood bath and didn't want the more valuable seasoned vets getting their heads shot off. It makes sense though, only noobs are dumb enough to run at a gun nest.
In Ze USSA lawsuits aren't even as big an issue as most people think. The Courts throw 2/3 out and in most cases the people just throw it out their looking for easy cash. How can either side prove anything,? If there was a fight they need to sue the other party, if something is stolen and they were responsible for it they need to pursue theft, if they trip then its all witnesses and conjecture. It's all too vague. Most of these end in no money judgments. The whole fear of getting sued is just another manifestation of the "mean world" syndrome. The real problem is letting irrational fear keep you from meeting your neighbors or community.
In my opinion (not to disparage Romania at all), but when a country that was under Communist control until 20 years ago has better internet speeds for 1/3 the price of the US, it should be entirely unacceptable.
Why? Thats what i was asking, What are the costs? Sure a former soviet country has better internet then U.S.. Government subsidy's excel at this kind of thing. But the cost the end user pays is not the total cost of creation when subsidy is involved. What are the true cost of producing this internet? I'd bet you its way more then what it is in the U.S.. And what is the market desire? If they produce it more cheaply and abundantly then what is actually needed you have tons of resources going to wast.
Monopolies don't allocate resources efficiently in many cases, but they don't reduce consumer surplus, especially when they are contracted by govt. You're claim that we need more webs make about as much sense as saying we need more cows because the EU has more then the U.S.
Also comparing price you need to use PPP, not exchange rate if you want anything meaningful.
Japan, South Korea, France and Sweeden.
Seriously? those countries are either technology obsessed or quasi-socialist. as another pointed out:
"Lower population density may mean that universal
broadband access isn't as profitable for commercial vendors as it might be otherwise (ditto with access to electricity, running water, telephone service, mail, etc.), but it certainly does not mean it is not feasible."
How about you back up your claim with a list of government spending on broadband. TANSTAFL, The cost has to go somewhere.
here's the thing, I didn't fail, and I'm 23. he just said I was drunk and refused me a Breathalyser or blood test because they don't need to for PI. Thats the kind of shit cops can do.
There are convoluted rationalizations for why this is so, but they are so insane that I will not bother to reproduce them here. Suffice it to say that society has collectively lost its mind when it comes to the idea of child pornography.
You could say the same for intoxicants. I spent last Saturday in a drunk tank.
While walking home after having 2 whiskey sours(an hour before), I was stopped and searched because my breath smelled of liquor, and was arrested even though I passed the sobriety test, and was refused a blood test, because the officer said so. If he can arrest me for being drunk without having to provide proof when will it be that he can arrest me for any thing he wants?. Madd is fucking creepy and the 21 drinking age is a joke that no one gets except them. I was raised on the idea of natural law, that if every one does something and no one gets hurt, than banning it seems to run against the laws of nature. It is much worse for weed.
Do you know what is causing the budget crisis in CA? Jails. And a legal system that is pumping them full because the constraints have been cut by lobbyists and "judicial activism." The problem with making the constitution a "living document" is that it can die. It's nice to see a judge actually following the law as it was written and intended.
The coddled child problem seems to fix itself IMHO. I lived in a house with a kid, 19, just out too college and had a room rented by his parents. Fucker couldn't even do laundry. Couldn't figure out a bus route, couldn't make basic food like eggs or sandwich. He literally FAILED college because he wasn't capable of the most basic self reliance.
These kids are Fail. how well will someone preform at their job if every time they have a problem they call mommy? they don't. I know so many of these manchilds. They can't get laid, they can't get promoted, they can't have good conversation. I don't see these people after I got past jr. year and entry level, because they haven't the skills to follow.
if they didn't have any spirituality then a copse would be nothing. they would probably just toss it in a ditch. If they pose a person, then it shows they think their is more to a person then just the body. that the person has a spirit.
Why not? I'd love to see this for boxing. When the hulking man-machines get the metric ton as a weight class, then I will truly believe we are living in the future.
Cooking and fire were taught to us by Prometheus, not the obelisk. The obelisk just taught us how to beat the shit out of other monkeys because it is bored and an ass. Everywhere that thing goes it fucks shit up. Hell, in the sequel it even blows up Jupiter for shits and giggles.
Not really. I have randomly guessed the answers to tests I didn't study for and passed, and failed hard. I would agree that there has to be odds, but often they can be so low it doesn't seem like there are.
Pointless tenacity is a survival trait when it comes to lots of things. I keep thinking the Velociraptor from Jurassic park had to have this "Tuesday: touched fence: oww, Wednesday: oww, Thursday: oww, Friday: holy shit!. It is stupidity only when it doesn't work. The few cases it does it would appear they more then make up for it or it wouldn't be so prevalent.
Well, until recently, pretty often. It 30% shows me there is obviously some form of survival benefit to this for it to be so high.
They cast this in a very negative light, calling it a disability, but the inability to learn from mistakes is actually a god send. I don't know how many people I've seen get knocked down at work, or turned down by women and not get back up. It's the people who throw themselves at things against the odds and keeps fighting that truly captures the imagination. I'm not surprised it is as low as 30% when you see the state of politics and society.
Mostly this article is a crock of shit. Genetics is becoming the new astrology, and I see little evidence that what they say really applies on a macro level.

I went there, even the reviews for his new books are too long!

"Reality" isn't necessarily what is directly recorded by a camera.
It only represents a tiny fraction of the information that is there,
Which is common knowledge to anyone who has ever tried to meet women on the internet and run in to the "myspace angles".

The solution is: if you can take it, you can have it. This format has worked for me thus far, I see no reason why it needs changing.
