  1. I'm a Project Manager .. on The Principles of Project Management · · Score: 1, Informative

Well thus my job title (Project Manager, Architecture). Now I know typically most /. topics are technology based, however I think there are similarities.

In my experience a Project Manager is someone with enough experience, resources to oversea the successful completion of a given project. Quick note green MBA's need not apply.

I think having a clear understanding of the product, the process, and the expectations is essential. In addition the ability to make assertive critical decisions based on experience.
Most importantly realizing the Project is No.1

Probably one of the most interesting projects I've worked on to date is Overseeing design consultants for an FAA funded Residential Sound Insulation Project. What made this a challenge was having to work with Airport Technocrats, Acoustic Engineers, General Contractors, Mechanical Engineers, Architects all in the same room at the same time. None of which having the desire to understand what the other did, and all believing his or her aspect of the project was most important. Insert politically motivated agenda's and viola a nightmare to oversee.

The new president will be so busy trying to clean up more important stuff that things like net neutrality will probably never come up as an issue until term two if that happens.

your being practical. population drives economy, ie people move where there are jobs, retail follows where there are people.

this being said energy needs are dependent on population, you can't just tell a million people to get up and move.

In Texas (rural) where land is still cheap this is feasable. In southern california you are either competing with farm land (central coast) or people (LA, Frisco)

  4. just a few thoughts on clena energy on Oil Billionaire Building World's Largest Wind Farm · · Score: 3, Interesting

just playing devils advocate as from a environmental point of view how could this be a bad thing. First off the US needs to do something like Germany and give economic incentives, ie a fixed price on energy. This way your not competing dollar for dollar with oil and coal.

This is a capitalist country after all, nothing happens unless there is a profit to be made. My only other concern is the amount of land that these wind farms gobble up. With the growth in population especially in energy craving areas like southern california land is at a premium, which makes dedicating hundreds of acres to a wind farm also cost prohibitive. Considering no only likes high tension lines running through their neighborhood it is reasonable to think that systems like wind and solar will have to think seriously about competing with local land needs.

In my field, I work with city depts quite a bit. I'm in southern California by the way. Each city has its own traffic engineering department. The timing on lights is based on traffic surveys which are typically requested by the city whenever a development goes in which will affect traffic patters. This has to be paid for by the developer. So though there are DOT and county guidlines, CalTrans in my case. The city does have jurisdiction over the timing of the light.

Now as a citizen it is your right to attend your next council meeting and protest this matter in a public forum. If your lucky someone might request a study be done. your best bet will be to point out inconsistencies between similar public intersections with and without lights, or better yet before and after the light was installed.

As a general rule yoru traffic engineer dept is full of lazy donut eating public servants who avoid teh private sector because of there inability to perform. ie he/she is usually a ripe target.
