    Parents prefer their beloved children. After all they spent years changing our diapers, cooking meals for us, helping with homework, getting us out of scrapes at school, supporting us through college: it's payback time.
    I'm less patient with my compemporaries, I make them pay.

    This works well. Also you can use Microsoft RIS in a similar way.
    Both allow you to edit disk images, slipstream service packs and do all sorts of things other than just copy a disk.
    You do need sysprep. You don't even need a boot floppy on most systems nowadays, network boots work fine.

    Supermarkets have to take back any unwanted packaging, and many consmuners unpack their goods when they pay for them.
    Shops have to close early on Saturday afternoons and cannot open on Sundays.
    I cannot think of appropriate words to describe the difference in driving techniques on freeways.
    America may yet be surprised by "old" Europe.

    Nail on the head, application compatibility. It's just not there. Big vendors, small vendors. Bank interfaces, secure comms applications. PC Anywhere is a major sticking issue, I agree.
    And when a vendor has thousands of locked in customers screaming for Active Directory integration, they do not want to hear any other request for development resources.

    We pay now, with extra admin charges when they cross the border. Those things will get cheaper.
    Downloads will get more expensive, but they will move offshore soon I am prety sure.
    There is a good market in hosting in the same locations as offer offline financial services; Panama, Caymans, South Pacific...
    Also low VAT countries like Switzerland (6%)

    Write a business plan for outsourcing your department's work (to yourselves).
    Present it to the management and offer to set up the idea company for outsourcing to (their own department).
    If they have financial problems they will love apparent the cost savings and headcount reduction and even help you set up on your own.
    You are in the perfect position to write a good contract for yourselves, to know what the management think they are getting from you, and how much time and effort it will take to deliver it to them.
    But be sure you are ready to run your own business.
    I did something similar (left and started my own business with my former employer as major client) 15 years ago in the last big recession, and have great quality of life. My former employer has been through Chapter 11 twice and been acquired 3 times and no longer exists in the form I knew it.
