You beat me. I replied up there before reading down here.

Your example doesn't show, however, that they are really equal, which they aren't judging from the output.

    -rwxr-xr-x 1 0 0 123204 27 May 16:13 /usr/bin/less

The 1 shows that only 1 file system entry points to the contents of that file. So you have 2 files which happen to have the same date and the same size. They are not truly equal, meaning they use double the space.

See here and note the equal inode numbers as well as the 3 showing that besides less and more, a third entry points to the contents of that file.

One example that blew me away was doing openssl speed md5 vs. openssl speed md5 -multi 2 on an HT-enabled NetBSD box (2.6C P4).

The throughput went from under 300M/s to 480M/s (can't remember and can't be bothered to reboot now to check).

That's just one counter-example. The general increase in responsiveness under load is a plus, too.

For real workloads a real SMP box is obviously better, though.

It just looks like a hobbyist programming example from a learning book. Maybe the interface is so ingeniously designed that it hides a vastly more complex editor engine. But said features list seems to say "Sorry, that's really all there is, can I have your $20 now?"

Are Slashdot editors so brainwashed by browsers that magically slap various TLDs onto some gibberish that they refer to correct behaviour as "choking"?
