You can't easily hate Microsoft, because whether you like them or not, at some point you actually have to use their products. Sony, though, Sony is easy to boycott. Sony you can boycott, and loudly proclaim your boycott, without having to really expend any effort or make any personal sacrifices on your part.

For high strength computers... you'd be taking a risk. While a system purchased from Dell/Alienware is fully protected if a power supply goes pop, the manufacturer's warrenty generally do not include damage from a power-surge because of that fault. (You could go for a high-end, but even the most reliable will encounter that random fault.)
Not once have I ever encountered a mfg who won't honor a warranty unless you have abused or neglected a piece of hardware.
I discovered that it is far easier to sell something when your in a suit (mind you I was a manager at the time). Your dress goes along way for creditability.

Depends on where you are. Where I am(Pittsburgh PA), 50K would allow you to rent a small office & pay utilities for a year while still having more than half of it remaining. Hell, you might even be able to get a few Whiz kids from CMU to do unpaid internships.
Where you're going to get computers, furniture and have enough to tax/legal obligations is another matter.
You're right 50k isn't enough to get a company started, but it's enough to get started. Finance operations long enough to pitch your idea for some VC money.
It's been my browser of choice for several years. Although, I do use Firefox and IE as well. Some pages don't render properly in Opera. So for those, I use Mozilla/Firefox, and for the few that STILL don't render properly I use IE.
