  1. Dark Colors on Reducing Eye Strain? · · Score: 4, Informative

I always find some some darker colors help my eyes immensely. I use a black background with some dark green text, and I'm sure not to have high contrasting colors among the code for different syntax hilighting. I'll usualy get rid of bright reds, yellows, and greens, and stick to more dull colors. Also, using ambient light seems to help in my case. Point your lights, if you can, towards the walls and use the light that bounces from there instead of the direct lightbulb. I find this usually eases my eye strain. I've worn glasses since I was a freshman in high school, but lost them about 3 years ago. I've never gotten a replacement pair, but I've noticed my eyes are feeling much better than before when I work in the above conditions.

With the introduction of higher resolution phones like this all over the place what are the privacy implications people face? 7 megapixels is quite clear indeed, and depending on the zoom (if any) you would be able to take some very intense candid photos. Also, as previously mentioned on slashdot, photographing sections of books or magazines in stores could grow in popularity. Depending on memory in the phone, one could walk into a store, snap photos of all the interesting articles of numerous magazines and then leave with a fantastic digital reproduction. So many evil intentions with these things...

Streaming is one thing that I've found WinAmp is excellent for. I'm not bothered that the development of the software will stop, as the version I have works for listening, and works for streaming. But out of curiosity, what else is out there that supports live streaming of whatever's on your playlist out to the internet world. For WinAmp the choice is obviously ShoutCast, which works wonderfully, and is also one of the main reasons I stay with WinAmp. Does iTunes have something that allows internet streaming? What about any other player out there? Just something I've wondered for a little while now.

I've owned two pairs of Ruby Juliets (Cyclops' eyeware from the first X-Men movie) Best sunglasses i've ever had. Extremely durable, and the lenses have a blue tint to them looking out (the only oakley lens with blue tint that I've ever seen is the ruby lens) which makes everything very easy on the eyes. Both pairs, unfortunately, have been stolen. This particular style of oakley glasses runs in at $400. I was lucky enough to have one pair as a gift. I now own a pair of their Penny model (slimmer form when compared to Juliet and Romeo lines), with the Ice Iridium lens. They're still wonderful glasses, and not nearly as expensive ($260), but i'd prefer to have the ruby lenses again.

  16. MP3/OGG? on Recording Industry Hopes To Hinder CD Burning · · Score: 1

After looking over the article, it seems that this technology just hinders directly copying a CD. What happens if you extract the audio to your hard drive in MP3 or OGG format first, then just burn those tracks to disc? Does this technology still work? Isn't this what a lot of people do anyway, copy the CD to their computers then burn individual tracks from many CDs to make personalized compilations. I know that's what I do frequently. It wouldn't make much sense to just limit CD->CD copying with no thought on audio extraction. Though, it's not that I like either idea in the first place.

  18. Re:No, they do not. on Microsoft Blames Anti-trust Legal Fees for Price Increases · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm not familiar with the laws in effect here, but it would seem to me that if Microsoft wants to raise prices on their products, they have full right to do that. Take, for example, HP, if you will. HP could conceivably raise prices on their laptops to $10,000 per unit (ridiculous, but they could). There is no law (that I know of) that tells HP "No, you cannot raise your prices to $10,000 per unit." The only reason they don't is because people won't buy them. Now we have Microsoft, who wants to raise prices. Why shouldn't they be able to? Going with their claims of not being a Monopoly, they would be just as able to raise prices as HP would. If consumers didn't want to pay the higher price, they DO have other options, OS X and Linux to name the two prominant ones.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't support Microsoft's business practices, nor do I like the fact that they force consumers to pay for their (Microsoft's) mistakes. But that doesn't mean they can't raise or lower prices depending on what the market will bear. But hey, I could be totally off base on this, so if someone would explain why they absolutely CANNOT raise their prices, please do so.

  20. Re:Police Only Please on RIAA Takes the Fight to the Streets · · Score: 1

If I remember correctly, here in Colorado we have a similiar law. I think it is called the "Make My Day" law. As far as I understand it, if someone trespasses on your property and you have reason to believe your life could be in danger, you can kill them. And, as far as I'm concerned, if anyone trespasses on my property, I feel my life is in danger...Are their intentions hostile? Are they armed? If I don't know 100% the answers to these questions, I WILL assume the worst and use deadly force to protect myself, my family, and my property. So, if fake-police RIAA agents come to my door and ask to take my things from me...I didn't invite them, I don't know them, they're trying to steal from me, and they're threatening me. My life is now in danger, their lives will now be ended.

My earlier post seemed a bit hot-headed. However, we are most certainly not having a tech boom right now. Not only that, but the company I work with survived the dot-com era, and rather well. I also have a few ideas on starting my own businesses to help make money to store away in case of troubled times. It just pains me to see so many people toiling away in college, and then a lot of them never use their degree. I don't have a degree, as stated, but I have a wonderful job that I love, as well as the skills to start my own business. Maybe I'm just lucky...

  22. Re:Why so married to 'tech'? on Tech Scholarships for College/University? · · Score: 1

I'm a little hesitant when I see the "school doesn't matter because you don't learn problem solving and those academics don't know their arses from a hole in the ground" attitude. The fact that this person has been working for 20 years means that he (or she) went into the workforce long before a college education was an absolute requirement (as it is now) for most well-salaried jobs.

Sorry, but I'd agree that a diploma has to be one of the most ridiculous things an employer can look at. I'm lucky enough to be twenty years old and work for a wonderful networking company around the Denver area. The company is a small business (only myself and the owner, actually) and we handle other small businesses' network needs. I'd like to think that I'm damn good at what I do, and even if I'd gone to school and got my fancy piece of paper I think I'd be behind where I am now. You state "well-salaried jobs"...what constitutes well-salaried might I ask? I can tell you that I take home more than the average american does, by quite a margin. I can also tell you that working with a wonderful boss, as I've been lucky enough to do, has taught me more about sheltering money (legally) and retirement planning than I believe school could have. Due to this, and my early planning, I should retire when most college graduates are still trying to form a nest egg. I'm all for "school doesn't matter" attitude. Suits me just fine, thanks.

Most of the hype around it is the numerous styles of uninterrupted music. Of course, if you are someone who wants talk/news/sports from different areas, satellite surely holds some bonuses for you.

  25. Re:Definately on Satellite Radio Systems Compared · · Score: 1

I agree that the radio is much more random, which is definately a bonus. But, and this is from personal experience, if I put in a CD I haven't listened to for months, I don't remember what's on it. Typically my CDs are mostly mixes, so that's why. If you use MP3 disc format, you can just drag+drop numerous songs onto it until you fill space, not even knowing what's on there until after you burn it. Do that a few times, and get 5-10 discs and who knows what will end up on there. The only caveat is that you'd need a pretty extensive MP3 collection.
