  1. Better panoramic images here on Largest Digital Photograph in the World · · Score: 1

I've been looking into working with panoramic images with my digital rebel and ran across this site. There are some really beautiful panoramic photographs of Washington DC landmarks in the gallery. Max also created a gigapixel image of Bryce Canyon using 196 photographs taken with a 6 megapixel digital camera.

I've been looking for intersting projects to work on so I can get a little more experience designing UIs but every porject lead I've approached has either ignored my offers of help or has been downright rude. Projects need to make artists more welcome and they just might offer their time in exchange.

Another thing to try is to not follow the trends in UI design just to follow the trends in UI design because you think this will make your app better. There are far too many OS X look alike icons and buttons designs and even worse knock-offs that try to not look like what they're knocking off.

Not really, you need to do both. While the US may not fear missiles being launched at us, we do have allies, chiefly Israel, that do and having a defense platform like this flying around would limit Iran or Syria's ability to launch a few missiles their way. It could also be used to keep India and Pakistan from blowing each other up with their nuclear arsenals. This could potentially eliminate the threat of nuclear missiles altogether, leaving us to focus on other threats such as terrorists obtaining the useless nuclear material from newly useless missiles and making dirty bombs to set off at locations of their choosing.

  5. Re:Not Sure This Matters Beyound Principle on Ekush: A CherryOS For the Windows World? · · Score: 1

Copyright violation confers five basic rights to the creator:

    1) The right to distribute (making copies available on the internet is most certainly distribution)

    2) The right to make copies (there are some fair use exemptions to this but they are very limited and making copies available on the internet violates this as well)

    3) The right to make derivative works (this is most likely what is violated when you take someone else's code, rewrap it in another app and claim it as your own)

    4) The right to display publicly

    5) The right to perform publicly

When someone takes code, rewraps it in their own app and passes it off as their own work they are violating 1, 2, and 3 mentioned above. The new app is a derivative work, it uses code that was unlawfully copied and redistributes it without permission. The problem is there are no degrees of distinction in the law which states violating numbers 1 and 3 are extremely bad while we can let you skate on numbers 2 and 5 if you're not being too bad. Certainly a judge can make a determination on his/her own as to punishment but copyright law is unambiguous here when it comes to whether a violation occurred. Basically there is no difference except that you are violating different rights granted the creator of the work in question.

It appears the treaty only excludes nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction from being put into space or on any celestial bodies. According to the Guardian article (why do people take this rag seriously?) the US Air Force is looking to deploy a few small spacecraft, likely highly maneuverable satellites, that can destroy surface to surface missiles, enemy aircraft, and enemy satellites which may be used for surevillance or other tasks which offer an advantage on the battlefield. I'd wager these are laser based weapons and do not violate the treaty as they are neither nuclear nor weapons of mass destruction.

No one has said the US would not do its part to limit pollution, it has merely said that it is not going to be a party to the Kyoto treaty. The two are not mutually exclusive. Perhaps the rest of the wold can try a little of the diplomacy it so highly values instead of "ordering" the US to abide by a set of stacked rules. Congress declined, during the Clinton administraton by a vote of 95-0, to not sign the Kyoto treaty in its first form and the second version that roped Russia into agreeing has not made enough improvements to make it worthwhile for Congress to reconsider. The Bush administration won't push the issue because it won't make it out of Congress. Everyone seems to forget that the US has three governing bodies, each with their own piece of the political power pie. They like to blame the President simply because he's a figure head for American politics.

Look at the urban sprawl and some suburban communities around the US and you'll find the same phenomenon. The US has cities that date back to the original colonies and their infrastructure is just about as old. Add that to the fact that we have laws which protect history to the detriment of progress in some cases. Mix in the problem that we are, as should have been quite evident in this last election, a Federal Republic (basically we're a loosely knit group of 50 countries known as states) and Federal laws are limited due to State's Rights which data back as old as the infrastructure and cities that can't be updated due to historical relevance and you have one big catch-22 that makes progress difficult.

Two problems with this First, Europeans do not have as many double-edged rights that we have in the US. The rights that protect citizens from government protect criminals and their activities. I do not condone the erosion of rights but I also recognize this conundrum for what it is. It's not as easy as saying go catch the crooks the "old-fashioned" way either. Criminals have learned from older law enforcement procedures and technology has allowed them to better hide their activities and even in some cases get away with criminal acts simply because older laws do not specifically apply.

Second, and even the ACLU recognizes this, is the fact that the Partiot Act in and of itself is not wholly bad. Their biggest problem is the lack of accountability and the ability to perform certain things in secret. Rip these two things out and the Patriot Act becomes an effective tool for law enforcement to tackle not only terrorist threats but criminal activities of all kinds. It's still not perfect but it's not that bad either.

What if you're a graphic designer like me? I work with large image files and an iBook, while ok for light work, really isn't well suited for this type of work. In Macland if I want a new G5, the old Mac becomes almost worthless. In PCland, I can purchase small hardware upgrades and get a whole new computer for the same $800, or even less in some cases, and spread the cost out over a far greater period of time. My older G4-like system in PCland can be upgraded to a G5-like system at a much cheaper cost without the need to sacrifice quality. I'm not going to go so far as to suggest Apple adopt the white box strategy that the PC world has but $799 iBooks are only great if you don't need the power of a workstation.

Normally I can't stand Crossfire mostly because of James Carvile. When someone answers his questions not to his liking ha immediately begins to shout him down and spout complete nonsense or straw man arguments. Jon Stewart nailed the problem with this show, and many other news programs like it, right on the head. Tucker Carlson didn't help the show when he tried to hold Jon Stewart to a higher standard, discounting the fact that Jon Stewart does comedy of the news and does not report the news directly. Surprisingly Paul Begala kept his trap shut for the most part and took the beating from Jon Stewart.

On a side note I thought John Kerry's recent appearances on Jon Stewart, David Letterman and Regis and Kelly were pathetic attempts to try to connect with average citizens and prove that he's not just a robot. Sorry John, you're still a robot and you just made an ass of yourself on these shows.

Also, thanks/. for posting links to this Crossfire episode. I spent last night at Bertucci's outside Fenway Park waiting to hear news of the fate of Game 3 of the ALCS. One TV had ESPN on it, the other CNN. Headline News briefly covered the show but as it was in a bar, there was only closed captioning so I missed most of what was said, and I was more concerned with the ESPN feed, I was upset I missed my chance to see Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson get tongue lashed on their own show.

It starts out with a bunch of American Indians preparing for their biggest, and possibly last, hunt for buffalo, without which they will starve during the winter. The audience thinks this is another trailer for an upcoming film. The scene cuts to two Indians overlooking the buffalo stretched out along plains from a hilltop when suddenly a cell phone rings in the background. The two Indians come to the conclusion that the sound is coming from the audience and turn to tell the audience to turn their cell phone off but not before the buffalo become spooked and begin to run away. It's a funny ad and it's seems to be somewhat effective as I've noticed more than a couple people checking to see if their cell phones are off after seeing the ad.
