There were many other companies that would have provided better software. It took IBM 15 years to realize that non free software was a bad idea, but they know it now. IBM and Apple were not the only companies making good hardware as you might suspect from the hundreds of makers that exist today.

These things are automated in Kmail and probably Evolution because key generation is done at the OS level. The problem is getting others to go for it because the steps are so painful on Windows, in the way you said.

  7. Extra software? on Safeguarding Data From Big Brother Sven? · · Score: 0

Why is it that avoiding "extra software" generally means leaving Windows in place? Windows and the non free software way are the main reasons privacy protecting software is not more widespread.

  10. Absolute Zero. on XP Deathwatch, T Minus 2 Weeks · · Score: 0

Windows security is like some sort of absolute zero that a Linux user can only asymptotically approach with great and unnatural effort. You can take software from 2001, run everything as root, force your mail client to open everything and modify it to execute code. You can make a sort of fake activeX, you can even run IE if you want, but the results will still not be as bad as if you just started out with Windows with it's 2001 codebase and the can of malware/crapware supplied by your favorite vendors.

The average is less than 1, so 90% are better than average. A larger population would be Gaussian but a small population does not have to be.

I'm not sure what this has to do with Digital Manners. You could say that devices under central control by M$ would make us all rude and talk about how that's a monoculture instead of a normal distribution.
