  1. you're still better off :'( on Collaborative Academic Writing Software? · · Score: 1
Seems like your people at least know how to use LaTeX... which is, to be honest, great.

Here's my situation: I'm in a social sciences department and I'm the only one who knows that LaTeX is not a condom, that svn is not a pharmacy, and they don't sell carpets in bzr... So I write my stuff up on LaTeX & save the version with bzr, do latex2rtf, then rtf to doc with my wife's MSOffice bc I need to make sure formatting is ok, then send that to my advisor. My advisor does that crappy "track" shit, which seldom works reliably enough with OOo. So I open it up in my wife's Mac, and cry... Then I put her laptop (with the doc open w/ its tracking info & comments) besides mine (with tex open in emacs+auctex), and cry some more.

I only wish LaTeX was not so much easier than MSOffice & OOo...

    was not sarcasm :'(

Unless those people paid for a web hosting package, they have zero recourse and they cannot be evicted as they never paid a dime for anything. They should not have any either.

If those people did not "pay" anything, the service could not have sustained itself for a second and would have collapsed. They paid something alright, but what they paid/pay changes with the type and provider of a service.

and of course, if they did "pay" (in a non-traditional way) something for that property for a temporary period, they became renters. In this case, following your own logic, they have either been unlawfully evicted or dispossessed.

Not really relevant to your story (the footnote), but I ordered verizon DSL a few years ago online; they sent me everything, I hooked it up (to a computer I installed Windows on just for this, so that support can't tell me "sorry we don't support lunnax") and nothing happened. A week and 3 calls later, I learned that my residence doesn't get DSL...
Online application still says that I qualify for DSL. I tried to chat with one of their support people recently (it's cheaper, so I wanna buy it) and it was quite interesting of a "chat":
me: I would like to confirm that I really qualify for DSL. (insert my story above here) --- supportperson: Did you try the online form? --- me: Yes. Could you double-check with your own records somehow? I wanna make sure I qualify for this. I don't want to deal with sending back equipment and phone calls again. Thanks --- supportperson: Would you like to proceed with your order now? --- me: have a good day.
