that's part of the setup nowadays though, isn't it? everyone chants "OMG APRIL FOOLS!", but in the article's defense it was posted 1-2 days earlier. also, that's sorta the time-frame virals need to spread around to become known.
hell, I hope I don't eat my words later, but I agree, it seems legit this time.
it's a good thing that a fuck-up like this happened on such a high profile international scale then. This has reminded everyone how unreliable DNA testing can be.
this incident has raised major awareness.
isn't it fun how the first tier of grammar nazis falls flat on their faces, when confronted with creative writing? I guess it's indicative, that most grammar nazis are in it for the trolling and catching-out of others, not for their love for (the english) language or worrying forbode of the sms-generation's lack of motivation to spell properly.
In all fairness (and I'm not implying that I agree with LCookie), the least caring people win today too. Our society is run by thugs and psychos out for their own benefit.
You're absolutely correct in saying, that a society without a social bond is doomed to anarchy, though.
yeah it took JFK a while to figure that whole berliner stuff out too:>
"Ich bin ein Berliner" means "I am a jelly donut".
"Ich bin Berliner" means "I am from Berlin"
I don't know, I'm becoming more and more wary about all the personal information Google is acquiring, and this is another area where Google is able to collect and store such information. Gmail, Calendar, Blogger, Desktop and now essentially, Phone Manager. The way things are going, soon Google will will be able to set your alarm clock for you without your direct input. They'll just know what time you need to wake up and voila.
I totally agree, but I'm also looking forward to this. it's a hate-love-relationship. I really hate and abhor the fact, that there's a company out there gathering such immense amounts of data on everyone - for the company's gain, not the public's. On the flip side, I'm truly envious of the quantity, quality and accuracy of their statistical data. I love that this data will enable them all kinds of awesomely cool stuff. I hate that they're essentially using that information to exploit their users.
it starts off nice and clean with direct and targetted advertising, which by itself might actually be helpful and not bore people with ads that don't have any relevancy to them. But if we project and exaggerate their prowess, we get to a stage where google can directly and on a massive scale, manipulate markets and behaviour.
The UK / BBC. Granted, it's not via torrents, but basically all their content is available via their page to watch online. These are restricted to certain regions though.
Also on a side note, there's a torrent tracker which is dedicated to British TV. Rumours fly, that backroom deals (for instance not distributing content available on DVD) keeps them from legal trouble.
also, I know that most german TV networks offer their content to watch online (though their TV imho, isn't worth watching).
I admit, they're not torrenting their data and I don't know how easy it is to make a local copy (afaik the BBC requires you to use their own software iplayer). In the grand scheme of things it's quite a step forward though.
In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penisses, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship.
amen brother. that's what I'm especially worried about. I don't have anything to hide, but I still don't want data about my personal life floating around in cyberspace. recently I recieved spam addressed with my actual real name - I was close to shock. I've been on the net since the mid nineties and never disclosed my real name, DOB, address or other personal and identifiable information. The only time I ever did this was when buying something via credit card from a trusted site or when registering a domain. Imagine how pissed I am after being so incredibly careful over the past decade and half and placing my trust in companies in good standing, for some bastard to go ahead and sell my info! I'm kicking myself now for not having marked my email address with..+company@.. and then there's stuff like facebook, myspace, etc. I'm on a german site (studivz) which is basically the same as facebook. using a pseudonym, and other false information, you can only find me if you know my friends. thank god, you can easily delete any information about yourself, including tags on photos.
what really pisses me off, for instance regarding the recent article illustrating google's facial recognition software, is that companies are exploiting tech-unsavvy people. when using their software, they ask you to tag people's images with their email address. they know, that the unsavvy lot will gladly divulge information about themselves and use this to get information about third people, who otherwise wouldn't be in their DB.
I might've rambled on a bit. My point is, that not just your surfing habits and tidbits of information you put on the net are the downfall of your own privacy, but also, and possibly especially, the information others divulge without thinking twice.
back in my counter-strike and cs:s days, explicit pictures where incredibly common. for those that don't know: every player could spray a selected image. earliest on they were simple 1 bit 256*256 images. through modding and patches, they became far more complex. my latest knowledge of the tags you can spray in cs:s even included full blown gifs.
you can imagine how many rude pictures from simple female nudity, to goatse to full blown gay anal sex there were (think meatspin).
hell, back when people weren't generally desensitized, I even did it myself sometimes. I laughed my ass off when players ran through a hallway, stopped, stared at goatse, had their souls sucked in and were easily ambushed. back then, tubgirl was more effective than a flashbang.
apparently, you fail to realise, that eventually they don't care about the hardcore pirates. the
"scene", for instance, has been alive for years and subject to many raids. those that know how to protect themselves are essentially untouchable by law. same goes for any criminal smart enough. (same goes for politicians!) enough! listen;
the MAFIAA's interest is to stop the widespread, common and easily available sharing of media. the "sheeple",as people like to call them, who use whatever their popups claim to be the best.
of-fucking-course the "scene" will still be alive. those people that know enough to evade prosecution, know enough to rip dvds too. but as long as you can discourage the general population (with lawsuits) from file-sharing, they might've made their point - legal and moral ambiguities as they may be.
as soon as people get pissed off enough, another Bram Cohen will emerge. Either declaring a new method or meeting the MAFIAA eye to eye in the courts - or shaking their hand.
essentially they're downloading and checking every torrent on their tracker for fakes and drm riddled crap. I don't think it's such a stretch from your proposal.
sure, generally it sounds good. too good to be true even - because it is. exact details are hazy from the bbc article refering to the 'tax', but the proceeds weren't going to enable everyone to download what they want. they weren't going to start a webportal so everyone can dl freely. the money goes to the mafiaa, bfpi and other cunts - presumably to hound their customers more.
agreed!

You're thinking of the mebigram :-)

Tell the movie studios to get fucking bent for not catering to, or blatantly ignoring your demographic.
We did that. They sued us for it.

apparently not.
giganews + newzbin + hellanzb = win.
Artists are my slaves, and they don't deserve shit for their work. As I said, FUCK artists, and FUCK their rights. I'm not doing anything wrong.
That's exactly what the RIAA says too.

so what happens on an electrical signal path? the data is declared corrupt? assumed 1? rounded up/down?
that actually does go into the equation of the probability to finding other intelligent life. longevity or lifespan of a civilization.
