    Okay; let's extrapolate a bit some of the elements of your submission.

    First thing to be noted is the innate bigotry of your statement: Any company will stoop to blackmail. How is this different from other sweeping, absolutist statements that claim, for example, all politicians are corrupt, all police are sadistic brutes, or all (ethnic group) are (place favorite slur here)?

    Second, there is the implication that since 'any company' supposedly will blackmail, then it's somehow less despicable for Microsoft to do so. IMO, this reasoning is just as ridiculous as mine would be if I claimed that since Joseph Stalin butchered millions of his own countrymen with no consequences, it's therefore perfectly acceptable for me to take an automatic weapon over to the local mall and have a good-old time.

    Lastly, as to 'putting all evil on Bill's shoulders,' last I checked, Bill's hand is still one of those on Microsoft's tiller. Have you ever heard the phrase The Buck Stops Here? He has the power to govern Microsoft's behavior, and therefore has responsibility for it.

    It's been my own long, painful experience that most people are as dumb as a box of rocks. But, hey; don't get upset about it, profit from it. Charge $250USD a pop to clean-up their brainless screw-ups. Long-term personal prosperity will be assured.

    The country may weaken itself due to internal conflict. Especially if the draconian measures continue to erode our personal freedoms.

    Excuse me, but do you have the faintest idea as to what you're talking about when you use the term draconian? Have you, by any chance whatsoever, spent any time within a truly totalitarian state? Have you at least studied one sometime in the past?

    Do yourself a favor: go do a little homework before writing anything like this again. Maybe it will give you a little more perspective on the subject.

    NAK. In the beginning there was the Difference Engine, with all it's cogs and sprockets. Then there came the first electronic machines, filling whole basketball courts, maintained by undergrads with shopping carts full of replacement vacuum tubes and programmed by lengths of wire pushed into sets of holes in a punch block. Punch-card machines were ripped-off from the Census bureau and hooked up to the computers so the scientists could get rid of the damned punch blocks. Command-line came about when someone thought up the idea of hooking-up an old Teletype machine to the cantankerous computers.

    The ironic thing is, your example contains what I call dead code.

    Whenever I come across dead code, I rip it out. The reason is that it eats compilation time, storage space, and RAM, and gives back nothing of value.

    Perhaps I'm just being fussy, but I personally call this dead code a BUG in and of itself.

The authorities in many countries, including the US, take a very dim view of someone using a cell phone while aloft unless they use special interfacing equipment to prevent the phone from capturing a channel on every single cell site in line-of-sight, and at 35,000 feet, that's a lot of sites. . . .

    I'm sorry, but I must emphatically disagree. Perhaps your organization does not have a HR department? All I know is when I left the Service, with over twenty years of field experience, the HR droids routinely round-filed my resumes and applications without so much as a "Thanks but no thanks" letter. I finally had to resort to the military "Old Boy" network to finally get my foot in the door.

    One instance that really sticks in my head is one place where I was bumped from consideration in favor of a kid with absolutely no field experience, the reason being that he had a BS and I didn't.

    ....I was offered a job on the cleaning staff, however....

    P.S.: What town are you in? I wanna move there....

    I'm reminded of the first time I flew an aircraft with an autopilot: at first I wouldn't use it, then later only under duress (Class B during rush-hour while in IMC, as an example), then finally almost constantly. It's a great de-frazzler when things get busy.

    Still, stuff breaks, and I always cross-check what George is up to every few minutes or so. It's par for the course, and as Ronnie once said, "Trust, but verify."

    . . . if they would be doing this if Kerry had won. If so, then what they're doing is a laudible effort to vet the federal election system, point out where it can be improved, and help restore people's confidence in it.

    If not, then it's nothing more than a petty attempt to make as many people (the folks that have to gather all the data for these requests. Remember them?) as possible just as miserable as possible for nothing more than a meaningless act of political revenge.

    I voted for Senator Kerry, and I suspect I know how someone like him would react to something like this, supposedly done in his name.

    Yes, in two counties. Now, all you have to figure out is how they managed to fake the remaining 86 counties, which used everything from machines from other manufacturers to (mostly) paper ballots.

    Their CEO pledged to do whatever was in his power to swing the election towards George.

    Yup; they're called large campaign contributions. A Republican (gasp!!) by the name of Senator John McCain has been fighting them tooth-and-nail for years. Have you given a thought to giving him and guys like him a hand, or you too busy with conspiracy theories?

    Interesting... Plus the exit polls seemed to suggest a different winner.

    Curious. What exit polls were you watching? Certainly not the ones I was monitoring. Something else that's curious is that people look at these supposed numerical discrepancies and assume that the voting process is flawed rather than taking a hard look at these unscientific, unmonitored exit polls.

    I've lived in Ohio all my life, voted for Kerry, and frankly find it insulting that a pack of conspiracy-mongering, tantrum-tossing ignoramuses think Ohioans are so stupid as to let some mythological cabal steal our ballots right out from under our noses.

    So go back to watching for your UFOs, and leave us alone.

    Hogwash. I live in Ohio, voted for Kerry, and I'll tell you that the vast majority of balloting in Ohio is still on paper punch-cards. Kerry lost in Ohio because he received fewer votes in Ohio.
