  4. Re:Secure e-voting on Researchers Demo Hardware Attacks Against India's E-Voting Machines · · Score: 2, Informative

Why are there so many stories on slashdot about how awful e-Voting is? Is there a large part of the slashdot audience that seeks a return to pencil and paper solutions, instead of this new-fangled transistorisation? I think your idea makes perfect sense, the situation where a PROM is touched is the same situation as where a ballot box has been broken open.

I don't really get if you are complaining or agreeing...

Thing is, there are many differences between a ballot box and a e-voting system.

In the case of the ballot box, you need to tamper with it after the election, when it is best garded. Each ballot box only contain a limited number of votes, and you need to prepare a large amount of false ballots before hand.

In the case of the e-voting system, you can tamper with it before the election and make 'invisible' tampering (ROM flashing, replacing the display with hidden chips, etc). Once you got access to the machine once, you are good to change many elections. Also, the machine can contain more votes than a ballot box.

In my opinion, this is not a question of how hard it is to tamper with something, but the scale of the changes you can produce. Paper ballots only allow for small changes, while evoting allows for large scale changes

  7. I don't get it on When SSD and USB 3.0 Come Together · · Score: 1

Flash drives are flash drive. They are plugged in USB and recognized as such. SSD are using the same technology as flash drives with a SATA interface. External mechanical hard drives are using a SATA to USB adaptor to work in USB. So basically, all the technology is already existing.

They replaced the SATA interface with a USB interface (like in a normal tumb drive) or just dropped a normal SSD inside a normal SATA 2.5" external box et voila !

    What's the news here ?

  10. Re:Is data integrity really necessary for large da on New Linux Petabyte-Scale Distributed File System · · Score: 5, Informative
First, Facebook & Google data are not possible to regenerate, as they are personal things, like emails, messages, posts, etc.

Second, you have other sectors producing large amount of data beside your favourite networking website. One example is the LHC. It is going to produce terabytes of data per DAY (15 petabytes per year). Another are space telescopes. Those data can't just be 'regenerated'. 1 day worth of data is incredibly expensive to produce.

Distributed file systems are already there, and people use them. Maybe not on your level of computer usage.

When you don't know what you are talking about, I think it is better to just keep quiet.

If I remember correctly, it started at $6 and now, it is a $7.99 (Apple would be happy ;)). I guess people don't want to appear as cheap and give a bit above the mean.

Anyway, in something like 6h, they already made $115k, which is pretty awesome. I wonder how much the total will be buy the end of the promotion in 6 days.
