DeBeer's behavior parallels other established interests we have read about recently such as taxi "cartels" trying to suppress upstarts Uber & Lyft, or hotel "cartels" trying to suppress VRBO & Airbnb. Jump ahead 50 years. I would wager that taxis, hotels, and natural diamonds will have lost their stranglehold to the likes of Uber, Airbnb, and synthetic diamonds. Adapt or die.

  9. This little nugget is buried deep down in the article:

The study cautions that for EV ownership to rise to high levels, the needs of drivers have to be met on all days. For days on which energy consumption is higher, such as for vacations, or days when an intensive need for heating or cooling would sharply curb the EV's distance range, driving needs could be met by using a different car (in a two-car home), or by renting, or using a car-sharing service.

So the expectation is that the average person who leaves the city limits now and again has access to a second car with a gasoline engine.

Reading about climate change in the popular press gives the impression that the vast majority of climate change research over the last 5 hears has found that our situation is more dire than that indicated in prior publications. Is that actually the case, or is the popular press cherry-picking the headline-grabbing studies. It would make an interesting survey to identify a baseline of expected climate change in research preceding 2011, and compare that to the expected climate change in research that is fewer than five years old. If a significant majority of recent publications predict a climate in greater distress than previously thought, that would affirm suspicions that the research is tainted. Likewise, if recent publications were well-distributed both above and below prior-2011 predictions, that would lend credence to the assertion that the climate change research is valid.
