it's really not a good idea to make reading slashdot obnoxious to readers... it has already been going downhill, and fast, recently. They really shouldn't make it a pain in the ass to read. It isn't funny, it's obnoxious. Now you get to ROT13 unencrypt the latest slashvertisements and 10 day old news!

Must be a better News for Nerds out there. Guess I'll go take a look.
Seriously. Does anyone have suggestions? I've been on/. so long (not as long as the OP, but still) I don't even know where else to look for News for Nerds./.bicurious is the last straw for many of us.
I doubt FF or chrome will be opt-in as long as google is holding the purse strings for both (or directly developing as in chrome). Google is the world's number one internet advertising provider... they aren't going to automatically opt-out people and cost themselves millions of dollars.
What about charging 10-15 seconds of CPU time with some arbitrarily hard code? It seems like everyone agrees that CAPTCHAs are an arms race that the good guys can't win, why not make it where it isn't profitable to solve the CAPTCHA replacement on a large scale?
I am actually pretty interested in this. I have been looking in Southeast Asia but I am having a hard time finding job postings... any recommendations? I only speak English and Spanish (which I assume is useless there), is that a problem in finding a job there?
I use dream host... "unlimited space and traffic" they really mean don't go crazy and try to host a google.com mirror off of it. Its pretty cheap, I pay $8 a month. You can run cron jobs, mysql databases, etc. I've been happy with it. I know it is karma/referral whoring but you can use my referral code and get a free domain registration: FOLLOWTHEHORIZON (if you already have a domain just use DREAMBUCKS for $50 off your first year). http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?303747
I call them cretins every day. I am not sure if they know what it means, however. I try to confuse them by saying it in a light, cheery tone like "How are my cretins doing today?"
I love that the link goes to a 404 page... the fact is that MS is discontinuing support for a 10 year old version of an OS. No one else to my knowledge supports an OS as old as XP at the level Microsoft has since Vista and 7 were released. Don't get me wrong, I'll use RHEL or Ubuntu any day over XP or 7 for that matter... but credit is due when credit is due.
An indignant hacker? What's next? Shoplifters of the world uniting?
You sir have no idea what hacking is. Hacking is not stealing, hacking is exploring and creating new uses for devices and software. Pirating is what you are referring to. The "hackers" that are following an internet HOWTO that walks them through downloading ripped PS3 games are nothing more than cheapskates costing the rest of us useful tools like OtherOS.
so it is doubly disappointing when he acts like George Bush III. Not only do I have to deal with this crap, but I can't help feeling ever so slightly responsible.
If you become verified by StartCom at the level 2 rate you can issue *unlimited* SSL certificates for any verified domain (verification is free). The second level is $50 per year for unlimited certs... highly recommended! I use this on all my internal "appliances" and websites.
This is a great idea. Also, every consumer ISP that I have ever been a customer of offers some type of antivirus/antimalware suite for free. Maybe this would be the kick in the pants it would take to have novice users install it on their PC(s).

No kidding. If Microsoft can get pounded for pushing IE too hard, can you imagine the fallout from Apple telling Palm (or an Android manufacturer), "Oh, you were going to put these in a phone?!?! The phones name doesn't start with 'i'? That'll be $(Original price * sqrt(Steve Jobs current mojo level expressed in number of 1/2 liter units))
From TFA (death to filters):
"Tin-hatted conspiracy theorists are suggesting that Sony wants to get old fat PS3s out of circulation as it seems to be the portly version which is having the most problems."
E-mail should stay on e-lectronic media! Unless there is a genuine purpose to have a printed copy of an email, don't print it. Digital archives are much more cost effective than that overflowing file cabinet anyway.
If (assuming you are a Canadian) the government were to impose a tax to cover the lost revenue of audio file sharing then the industry would have a hard time winning a lawsuit claiming that you "pirated" the files, when, in fact, you paid for them already through such a tax.
Therefore if you pay for an iTunes version of an MP3 instead of downloading one from your friend down the street you are double paying.

Thats why the MAFIAA quickly drops suit when they try their crap against someone with deep pockets. (as Oracle is finding out about Google now)

I have around 1.5TB of photos and home movies on DH as a web-backup and to share with family without having to sign the rights over to facebook.

Anyone have a pdf of a poster I can place on my office door? I need to remind the cretins in the accounting office outside.
Find me a Linux distro that supports 10 year old versions, on the desktop.
These cowboys might I guess....

Even if he was, what makes you think he want's to nuke Israel and the US? You've been watching too much CNN, I think.
Umm... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmoud_Ahmadinejad_and_Israel Pretty sure he wants to wipe Israel "from the pages of history"... granted that may or may not include nuclear weapons.
Mod up please.
