I think you are definately right, this is a pump and dump operation. Checking out the website, I cannot believe the money these criminals are making -
from 20 June to 22 July a Broughton, Reginald C has made over 3/4 of a Million dollars in selling stock, stock that he probably got with options, or purchased at under $1 a share
The SEC should crack down on this
I don't mind other people becoming successful, but SCO doesn't even have a product that is worth a crap anymore!
all OSS should refuse to compile on SCO unix (print an URL to a website explaining why).
The problem with that statement is that it goes against what the open source initiative stands for.
If you read the Open Source Definition on the opensource.org's web site number five states :
5. No Discrimination Against Persons or Groups
The classic example is that you cannot say an abortion clinic, or anti-abortion activist can't use you software, but this is also a good example.
I have installed Netscape on many of my business accounts computers (I am a computer consultant). Here are the reasons -
over a modem, netscape makes total sense - no popups, ability to block images from certain sites, doesn't ping any microsofts sites when it can't find a site, etc.
Mail Application - Even though it does not (by default) implement a calendar or tasks, it kicks the hell out of Microsoft Outlook & OE - don't need to worry as much about viruses "automagically installing themselves", Netscape mail handles multiple email accounts WWWAAAYYY better than MS O&OE (even better than evolution 'out of the box'), SPAM filtering, etc.
Very Good Web Development App included
Tabbed Browsing of course
Properly renders "Compliant Pages" - Internet Explorer is just going to get worse since MS is not going to update the standalone browser anymore - (Their CSS rendering sucks, and why didn't they ever fix their PNG support.)
Skinnable out of the box
As a note, I have always installed Netscape on my clients computers instead of Mozilla, but now that AOL is dropping developers, I think Netscape may fall way behind mozilla.
Hopefully the week of the June 9, they will also release the complete source code to everything they use to build XD2.
I have 1 Gentoo system at home and 2 Built from scratch machines, and it would be soooo cool to have a ebuild for Gentoo, or at least a Garnome type build script. Especially for their OpenOffice.org version.
After reading this interview I really Can't wait.... Even tried their ftp site, but the XD2 directory is not browseable by an Anonymous Coward!
In the interview, Gates said it's up to other companies to ensure interoperability.
Thank you Microsoft. No need for comments here.
This is exactly what the laywers should have went after on the Antitrust lawsuit - No matter how well you make your product, if it competes with Microsoft, They will FSCK up their system enough so your product will not work, but theirs will, then they will tell you that it is up to you to ensure interoperability.
Examples - Try using Frontpage behind a Squid Proxy - won't work, but it works with their proxy server. It probably could be fixed on the squid side, but the problem is Frontpage doesn't use standard communication protocols.
Or how about every time Windows gets updated, Samba somehow mysteriously has errors that need to be worked out. If Microsoft was NOT a monopoly, they sure as hell would make sure that Windows worked with other servers - just look at how Windows 95 worked reasonably well with Netware Servers.
Or how about they add something to Windows, like Movie Maker, but they want to extend their Monopoly, so they make it so it will only save in their new WMV format and nothing else.
Sorry for the rant, but this is exactly the mentality that Microsoft has. The Department of Justice dropped the ball, and apparently Microsoft is picking it up and running with it.
I went to DreamCatcher tonight with my wife and my daughter (a Stephen King Fan), and after all the previews they showed a 10 minute (or so) Animatrix Mini called "Final flight of the Osirus" and I have got to say I was Totally Embarrassed.
I could not believe the fight scene (or should I say SEX SCENE) at the beginning. Whoever they got to do the animation needs to go get some, and soon!
If the Matrix Movies are going to be more like that short, the sequel is going to blow worse than Caddyshack 2.
If I get tossed in jail for whacking a mole and am sentenced for 2 years, then Congress passes an extreme No Whacking Law with a minumum sentence of ten years, my 2 years will NOT be extended to 10 years.
Who would think that extending a different contract - copyright - would give them the power to extend the existing contracts ? In no other instance would this be even remotely Legal, let alone constitutional.
I have given up on the US Government quite a while ago.
Even though these may work on a business network, there are far, far better solutions available. The one I always try to implement is the Mandrake Network Firewall (instructions here.
Not only is this a superior firewall, it also provides -
Proxy Caching Server - to reduce bandwidth
Caching DNS Server - to further reduce bandwidth
SquidGuard/DansGuardian - to block certain sites and content
true DHCP server
VPN support
you can add multiple network cards and use it as an advanced router.
You can use named to setup DNS services for your private lan.
SSH support.
SNF is based on a Linux Distro, so you can add any feature/service you need, and run it on nearly any old computer(P5 or better for Mandrake).
Granted the Linksys works for small LANs, there are much better solutions available if you have the knowledge.
What if there are works that don't dovetail with the accepted works? What if some writings in their collection outright contradict other writings?
There are already many, many works that don't quite jive with accepted beliefs and some that even contradict the teachings. When the new testament letters were being combined, there were many letters that were not accepted because there was not 100% certainty that they were not from one of the Apostles. Most of these letters are available today.
As for the some bibles not including some stories in the Old Testament, it goes back to when the Jewish community "cleaned up" the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and left out any text that was not written in Hebrew.
Conspiracy Theorist aside - The Vatican is usually very open about any information you would want, or need. The main role of the Catholic Church is to save souls, and to hide any relevant information would not be in their best interest (They want to save their souls too !).
The problem you are seeing is not with Linux in general, it is with the different Distributions.
Red Hat should be responsible for supplying you with an update if in fact you paid for your copy. If they aren't, send them an email, and I am sure that an updated RPM will be released.
Currently no Linux Distribution can afford to update all of their releases, but this is changing. Distributions are starting to wait longer and longer between releases (which is a good thing), and the Linux apps are actually maturing to stable - just look at OpenOffice and Mozilla.
Once the Linux software becomes more stable, the distribution companies will stick with one version and update it like Microsoft is currently doing with windows.
The easiest way to see how difficult a Win2K Server can be to administer is to just swap out a network card, even if you use the same IP address, Service after service messes up. The DNS service will need a flush and scavange, the WINS service will need the same, other services will behave erratically, and before you know it, no one will be able to login to the domain.
The WINS service went from a nice to use service that reduces network traffic, to a single point of catastrophic failure ! I even tried to get around this by using a Samba Server as the WINS server, but Exchange will not work with anything other than Microsoft's services. Oh, and don't even think about using a different DNS server either, I don't know what the Win2K server is looking for, but many of the services will not work unless I use a MS DNS server as the primary DNS, so I have 1 Win2K DNS server providing DNS services to 3 Windows Servers, and 2 Bind DNS servers providing DNS services to over 100 machines.
I don't know where Microsoft gets their 1 degree of seperation Ads from, but from what I gather is if you try to seperate a Win2K Server and use other software on the network, the MS server will not work. Oh how I wish MS would have stuck with NT 4.
The only reason I purchased the Plextor 40x CDR is because how the Plextor Drives perform with Norton Ghost. I routinely backup our workstations to CDR with Norton Ghost 7, and most CDR drives are painfully slow with this DOS program. I have even seen 32x and 40x CD Burners run at only 60 MB per MINUTE with ghost. Plextor burners are nearly as fast as the Hard Drive, running consistantly over 200MB per minute on 7200rpm Drives, and even faster on our SCSI based Servers.
Why don't reviewers benchmark this test, because it is a very common use of a CDR Drive.
Brian Eno is one of the best 'electronic' musicians, period. He started doing very cool electronic stuff with Roxy Music, then started to venture out on his own. He also worked with David Bowie during his "berlin years", which included some very cool electronic tracks on the second sides of the Albums Heroes and Low. Since then he has release numerous solo albums, has produced big bands such as U2, and was the musician that did the Windows 95 Startup Music.
If you just want to sample his stuff, definately check out the first Roxy Music album, the Bowie albums listed above, any of his strategies albums, and his albums Before and After Science and The Shutov Assembly.
The last time I checked there are tons of his songs that people are sharing on the Gnutella Network.
Too Bad that a lot of the servers on the top 50 uptime list still have the default page that apache provides.
I'm sure it isn't too difficult to keep them running - just make sure the power is on and the network cable is plugged in.
This is the worst thing the RIAA could do
on
RIAA to Sue You Now
·
· Score: 1
They'll have to arrest someone, and no matter who they do, they'll be setting themselves up for negative publicity.
Furthermore if they do try to prosecute all of the people who share music online, they could and possibly will LOSE their copyrights in the first place.
Think about it, we are granted a fair trial with a jury of our Peers. The people who will be on the jury will be the parents of all the teenagers that swap music (over 75% of those on P2P networks are teenagers), and if they aren't their parents, it will be people who have friends who have teenagers, or the people who feel that the RIAA is ripping people off in the first place.
If they start taking people to court, it will backfire, and backfire big. They will lose, they will appeal, then when it gets to the supreme court, they will strike down the current copyright law, or at least modify it greatly, then the RIAA will be out of business.
The Federalist Papers is a book that contains the letters of our founding fathers during the writing of the constitution. In it there are many concerns of what "Seperation of Church and State" actually means.
Sep of Church & State was included, because at the time there were many countries that were actually ruled by the church elders, our founding fathers did not want this, so they added it to the constitiution. It was in no way meant to take all religion out of the government, it was included to ensure that the heads of the church would not rule the government.
I don't know when the press or lawyers or whoever construed it into what it is today.
Anyway, don't take my word for it, actually read the book at Project Gutenberg
I was wondering if it was hard to get permission from the gaming companies to do this, since I know about every game EULA prohibits public exhibition. A few times I wanted to setup a LAN for our community to play games, but never wanted to deal with the legal stuff.
It's nice to hear most gaming companies were so nice, ( I wonder what happened to blizzard to make them such an aweful company now, they used to be pretty cool, oh well).
Why not hold the virus writers more accountable. Today if you get caught by writing and spreading a virus you get a slap on the wrist, and maybe some probation. We should have tougher penalties for creating viri, including jail time AND make them repay all the damages (this could be in the millions).
I remember when the last chernobel virus hit about 3 or so years ago, and many computers got their BIOS chips fried, thus pretty much having to buy new motherboards. If I remember right the guy that wrote that just got a slap on the wrist even though he caused Billions in damage (especially in China). He might of even got a job offer too.
Until there are strong reprocussions to creating viri, people will still do it. To make a software maker accountable would be stupid, and it would probably be the end of most software development because everyone would be sued for stupid stuff (well more so than they are already).
This is only music for crying out loud. When everyone starts breaking a law, maybe it is time for the law to be rewritten.
Also, if the RIAA would wake up and sell MP3s, they would be making tons of money and wouldn't do stupid stuff like this. They apparently do not remember the MPAA and VHS tapes.
If the RIAA would actually use the internet to drive sales, many, many people would put down money for MP3s.
I would be willing to give about 10 cents per MegaByte for professional, complete MP3s. Barring that there is NO Copy Restrictions.
If the RIAA would stop worrying about people sharing the MP3s and actually become a supplier for what people want, they would make tons of money. They are in the position to capitalize on this, but they are too busy worrying about losing some sort of "control" they have over music.
To go along with the parent post, will Ximian ever combine all of the libraries it uses into one large tarball to keep updates easy and to try to unify the distros? Kind of what KDE does with KDELibs ??
I realize Gnome is still somewhat in its infancy, but I believe this would go a long way in getting Gnome easier to update and maintain.
This is exactly the reason that I use Linux on my computer. I got tired of having 20 applications installing themselves when I try to install an application that I purchased, or even just installing drivers. With Linux I am in control.
If the fortune 500 company was known it could find itself in a lawsuit with over 10,000 Linux Developers for a breach in the GPL contract.
Anyone who buys a license from SCO is in breach of the GPL.
I think you are definately right, this is a pump and dump operation. Checking out the website, I cannot believe the money these criminals are making -
