  3. First questions on What Do You Look For In a Conference? · · Score: 1

Ok, firstly, how did you advertise your conference? Secondly, how many of these types of conferences are there already, and how well attended are they? Lastly, in your presentations in existing conferences on this topic (assuming in a wider scope conference), how many people actually attended YOUR talks?

You need to make sure that you are adding enough value for people to pay the money to attend and for employers to believe that the time spent at your conference is a better use of the paid time for their employees than would be spent staying at work and reading some books on the topic. I'm not trying to be harsh, but it's definitely worthwhile making sure you do your research first. There's also the possibility that if you manage to get the conference off the ground, that in a few years time it will really start to expand. But at the get go, you need to really be adding some value for attendees and the companies paying for them.

Really? We had several outages that affected my old company, who was using it as their main email provider. No notice either for one scheduled outage, just "GMail is down for maintenance." Granted, we're in Australia so the times they took it down might have been fine in the US, but a notification would have been good beforehand.

Without trying to go too far off topic to answer your question, no, you get to choose from a number of plans that are a combination of speed and quota. Generally, the more speed or quota, the higher the price per month.

  20. Re:Could they possibly... on Time Warner ToS Changes Could Mean Tiered Pricing, Throttling · · Score: 1

While this is absolutely true, the pricing that we are charged here for poor speed and low quotas is frankly highway robbery and not really justifiable even with this consideration. I know we started life as a penal colony, but do the ISPs have to keep up the tradition? :)

Now, back on topic. Most of the ISPs here do not charge quota for accessing their servers. Telstra run games servers that allow their customers to play without hitting their quota, while my ISP runs a large mirror site that has an impressive array of files that again do not count toward your quota. This appears to be the model that TWC is trying to apply over there.

  21. Re:Could they possibly... on Time Warner ToS Changes Could Mean Tiered Pricing, Throttling · · Score: 2, Informative

In Australia, we get to choose our plan by both speed AND quota. If you exceed your quota, in most cases you will get shaped to 128kpbs. Some of the bigger players like Telstra charge you excess usage per megabite over the limit. This pricing structure has been in Australia for many years.

  23. Re:Anybody with young children... on The Dangers of Being Really, Really Tired · · Score: 1

Interesting, haven't seen those studies, but that doesn't mean much :) The studies I've seen are to do with the hippocampus. Neural recordings taken on rats show that during sleep, memories are played back in the region, not once, but several times. The even more interesting part is that they are replayed backward. I'm not sure how this effect applies in humans, if it does or doesn't occur in humans, but I recall that the research was hypothesising that it may have been a transfer from the hippocampus (known to be involved in short term memory, along with navigation) to the cortex.

Anyway, this isn't exactly my field, so I don't really have a heavy grasp of the details here :)

  24. Anybody with young children... on The Dangers of Being Really, Really Tired · · Score: 3, Insightful

...understand the joys of lack of sleep for extended periods. You have periods - sometimes weeks on end - where you get interrupted every couple of hours, which means you're not getting much, if any, REM sleep. I know of other parents who say that with multiple young children they have periods of YEARS where everything is just a bit hazy.

There has been some research (can't remember where I saw it) that sleep is vital for moving the day's memories from short term memory into long term memory where it can be accessed. Extended lack of sleep means that new information isn't properly transferred into the cortex and so gets "overwritten" with fresh information, resulting in some memory loss.
