  2. Is PARC really that good? on Top Research Labs in Human-Computer Interaction? · · Score: 1
While there has obviously been a great contribution by Xerox PARC in the field, methinks Nielsen included it in every decade more to make a point than because they really deserved it. What have they done in the past five years anyway? The past ten? Not all that much that I can see. Their list of accomplishments reads like high-tech-marketing-mumbo-jumbo, and makes some pretty far-reaching claims (object-oriented programming)?

Nielsen's piece is more important to read because of its (rightful) insistence on HCI as something which is rarely considered when it should be.

Well, we now have the result. After 2,5 of dabbling, Mozilla - overall - still hasn't risen above the Netscape 4.x level. Everything that has been improved has been compensated, unfortunately, by the bloatedness, instability, memory hunger, static look and feel, etc."

If it's already been ruled that any pirated songs on Napster are Napster's fault, then it doesn't seem surprising that 100% compliance should be expected. The argument everyone's putting forth is that they shouldn't be resposible for the "small number" of people getting through, but the thing is - they are responsible as far as the law is concerned.

99% compliance for parole conditions is still non-compliance, 99% payment of taxes paid still leaves unpaid taxes. Napster shouldn't have to remove every copyrighted file from its network, but if it's been found responsible for every file, then it should be responsible for removing every file from its network. Everyone's problem is with giving Napster responsibility, not ensuring 100% compliance with the law.
