I still haven't gotten my AIW to work right but I've got a hauppage 350 that works just fine. I did, however, have to go to a third party site and download version 3.24.54.67.54 of the driver to get it to work. This isn't a real big problem for me but I'm unsure it will ever be a software-only solution for the unwashed masses.

Granted, Google has a great search engine and that desktop thing ain't too shabby either but it is, with the exception of mail, variations on a theme. Google isn't so much in the business of coming up with new ideas and bringing them to market, they are just perfecting what others do. I'm not saying it isn't valuable (what other website name has been transformed into a verb) but to compare their handful of products with the breadth and depth of the Ms product line is laughable.

In my case, I wanted a guy to go kill spyware and fix defective computer parts and I advertised for just that. Imagine my shock at opening resume's for guys (and gals) with 5-10 years of experience willing to work for $15/hour. My initial reaction was that it was some idiot coming out of a big gov't contractor who was vastly overpayed due to a sea of paper credentials. and while I don't know much about the economy overall I can say this much: it seems like the older It guys who survived the .com implosion are kinda burning out and looking towards different types of IT employment. Many are willing to give up high-paying (and/or high-pressure) jobs miles away in the city in order to be near home and, in many cases, a new child or wife. I know it's not unique to our field but I do believe that most IT people tend to think a bit differently about this and come to the decision that money isn't the be-all. I recently put a listing in the local paper for a desktop support guy, $10-$20/hour. I got an amazing number of responses from people who were *already employed* making way more money than I was offering and were clearly over qualified. Number one reason was to be closer to home. Number two was traffic.

At first I chalked it up to people who were lying about already being employed but after talking to them on the phone I'm not so sure. I'm near Washington and our IT scene isn't as bleak as other places so this may be a local trend.

The common cold? Virus. What can you do? Wait it out. Sure we can treat symptoms and, in some cases, endrun the virus to head off some of its bad affects but meet it head to head and win? Hasn't happened yet. This discussion was in the context of the "every patient who has a cold wants an antibiotic" discussion. He has a tough time explaining to people that anitbiotics don't treat colds. Sure, they can contain a secondary infection but it won't help the cold at all...I don't know how much he was talking out of his ass but it was interesting.

fair enough but your characterization of installing a DVD player on windows is out of proportion. I just bought a $35 DVD drive that came with a copy of power dvd. Not a great program but it works and all I had to do was stick the CD in and it installed, the S/N was on a sticker right on the sleeve. I was driven to this after spending 2.5 hours trying to get the mother@#$#@!$#$ing DVD player software installed on linux. I tried following the directions and wound up with jack. The final straw started when I had to edit yum.conf (what a name) with a longish string. I edited it, ran the update command and watched as it downloaded god only knows what for the next half hour (on a T-1 line). Maybe I went about it wrong but it just shouldn't be that hard. I think linux is great, it's my swiss-army knife for just about everything. I like nothing better than to whip out a copy of linux and solve a problem for almost nothing that somebody wanted to sell me a $2000 solution for. However, a desktop replacement? Not yet.

If you want to flame me, please include an answer as to why in the world I would have to edit my yum.conf file to install a dvd player and compare that to the difficulties of installing the same software on windows. If you are stumped as to why I ask this, then employ your sage wisdom and explain why the average user would be excited about spending hours on usenet trying to figure out how to accomplish the most mundane tasks on linux.
