Your point, while likely to be labeled xenophobic, is largely right. The other thing to remember about the Chinese is that they maintain an artificial exchange rate by pegging their currency to ours. They have resisted all of our overtures thus far to let their currency float up and down like most others to keep the exchange rate down and their products cheap. Their claim that they are a poor country consisting mostly of subsistence farmers is true but it's a red herring. As you rightly point out, the Corporate offshoring and false exchange rates are killing us more effectively than bullets and bombs would have.

As a Republican I'm in the odd position of hoping that Kerry wins and organized labor holds his feet to the fire in an attempt to keep some jobs that are a shade more advanced than frycook inside the United States. I think that the coming recession, fueled and deepened by the continuing outflows of jobs and capital, will be the biggest issue for the next administration. Bush is clearly unwilling to do much of anything about it, indeed, he seems almost unaware. We're so tied up in WTO and all of that other bullshit that I'm unsure anyone can do much about it but at least Kerry seems inclined to try.

I run a small consulting company and we see it every day. Just when we get users trained not to install every frigging "helpful" toolbar, cursor or wallpaper program out there they go on to a new company and in comes another user who happily installs everything that comes down the pike. Setting them up as a restricted user helps but then they bitch that they have to call us whenever they want to install anything. That argument works exactly once - until we have to spend a couple of hours trying to unfuck a machine infested with crap and we explain to the boss what caused it. BAM! no more local admin rights. Try as we might to explain this ahead of time it seems to make very little difference until that first bill arrives. Some say it's not a bad thing as it keeps people like me in business but I'd rather that my customers desktops were always functional and I spent my time on backups, security and more interesting consulting work.

In my district, we use machines that have a little lever. The machines are like 30 years old but they are being replaced because they are too "unreliable". I've asked some of the election workers about them and evidently they work just fine but the electorate appear to be to damn stupid to figure it out.
