Green Dam is made form code stolen from Solid Oak. (yeah its crap code but that is not the point) ZDNet China is knowingly distributing material that violates copyright. ZDNet China profits from this distribution via advertisement. ZDNet China is owned by CBS American. CBS American is liable for the actions of its subsidiaries. CBS American is borked.
And yes...CBS KNOWS that there is copyrighted code in there. This has been going on for months - this was not a "suprise - that violates - here is your lawsuit!" situation.
And this is not even close to the same thing that was with Pirate Bay, because they are actually hosting the download.
And this wont kill free software. It will either encourage new novel code...or implementation of coding tricks so that copied code does not look like copied code.
I am trying to decide what to do with my cell service as it is - its nuts that my wife and I (who brought our own phones to AT&T because we like our unlocked international phones) pay inflated monthly bills to subsidize phones we didnt get. That - in combination with the other BS charges that are on our land line for things we dont use - has my ass chapped. I hope and pray (well I would pray if I prayed) that the FCC busts AT&T and the other cell providers in the teeth for that bullshit.
Wait - what am I saying? Nothing will happen. I hope I am proven wrong.
"We envision a building imaging scenario similar to the following. Emergency responders, military forces, or police arrive at a scene where entry into a building is potentially dangerous.... The nodes immediately form a network and self-localize, perhaps using information about the size and shape of the building from a database (eg Google maps) and some known-location coordinates (eg using GPS).
For some reason - this made me think of Voltron. Not the lion voltron - but the crappy vehicle voltron. All the tiny botnets coming together to form a huge botnet...but it would probably be a ro-beast. Maybe then lion voltron could come destroy the evil bot-net ro-beast.
Great - now my day is ruined because I am going to be looking for an MP3 of the lion voltron assembly thing to put as a ring tone on my phone.
As every Slashdotter knows, there is not even the slightest difference between the two main political parties in the US and voting for either one is a futile and pointless gesture serving only to perpetuate the existing corporate/military/lobbiest complex.
OMF - you are giving far too much credit to the some/.ers as evidenced by plethora of posts of "Obama is selling us out...", "It's all Bush's fault...", ad nauseum.
The issue is that most people really dont want absolute freedom - which is anarchy. These whingers demonize any restrictions that are placed on freedom (when they feel that their rights are being slighted) even though it is these restrictions that helps keep freedom free (how is that for an oxymoron).
...playing just for those bored enough to make a list like this.
Seriously though - who cares what state gets the most spam? Its not like spam is more prevalanent in low income areas or in areas with high instances of drug usage - and its not like I am going to NOT move somewhere because they have a lot of spam (unless you are talking about the "food" variety).
How in the hell could you ever do a controlled experiment like this on people if you dont control their exposure to the infection causing material? The only way you can determind improvements of real thing over placebo is if you intentionally expose the test subjects to the virus...which would be a death sentence.
Their results could mean that the group recieving the test vaccine came into contact with the virus 31.2% less.
Those "threat levels" dont mean anything anymore because we are numb to them. The harassment that you get through security is really just an illusion: if you feel like you are inconvenienced and your stuff is being searched, then you feel safe. I remember going through security 3 times on one trip...getting to my hotel and pulling out the power brick from my briefcase only to have my pocket knife come out with it. I didnt intentionally bring it...but...holy crap on a crap cracker...I made it through security with that! There are other stories as well, but its all about the illusion - people feeling safe and people feeling like the govt is doing something. Truth is that if one of these jackholes really wants to do something terroristy - then they will find a way. I hate that it will happen...but it will...and I am sure we will get more inconvenienced over it.
Its a pretty common test in drinking water plants to do a "residual" test. In the US, they normally check for residual chlorine in the water as it leave the drinking water plant - as residual chlorine = no bacteria (for the most part). They also send inspectors out periodically and actually test the water at the 'end of the line' to ensure there is a chlorine residual. On the space station/shuttle, they iodine and silver are easier to handle than chlorine and are used in combination to disinfect the water...so a residual of both should mean that any bacteria/viruses have been removed. Of course this does not address the removal of soluble organics and other contaminants...but those are a bit easier to remove than critters.
Why should the FTC get involved? Where is the anticompetitive issue?
Oracle is anticipating that they will acquire Sun. Sun is a competitor of HP. Oracle originally worked with HP, but now they are going to work with Sun (or in-house if the aquisition goes forward) because they developed what they think is a better product in conjunction with Sun.
What is the FTC going to do - force Oracle to continue to do buisness with only HP to sell a product that they dont want to sell?
Reminds me of a great line from The Way of the Gun - "Karma is only justice without the satisfaction, and I dont believe in justice."
I would agree that we fit the mafiosos with cement boots so they can assist in the cleanup, but its pretty simple really. They load up the ships with the toxic stuff under the guise of taking it to be "legally disposed" of...the ship "sinks" enroute..."Awww...but it sank! We cant do anything about it now!" Not exactly the oldest trick in the book...but its pretty old!
When I was growing up, I had Mr Wizard on Nickelodeon and absolutely loved it. Sure, some of it was dumbed down but it was perfect for kids. Unfortunately, most of society has become consumers that never question anything. A "panel of scientists" says "we think _______" then it becomes gospel as touted by CNN. Our kids need to learn to question - think - explore - analyze - and know that ITS OK! Hell - I remember going to my dad about the age of 9 after seeing the movie Firefox with a mathematical proof that Santa could not exist (because he would have to travel faster than Mach 5 - and at that speed the skin of aircraft gets too hot so he would melt).
I have never been a fan of "upgrades" as they tend to be a bit buggy. I did a clean install of Windows 7 x64 the other day just to try it out over XP and I have to say that I am impressed (well over XP that is). It did not take too long, but then again, I would click something...go back downstairs to watch football with my tasty beverage...go upstairs at the break...rinse and repeat.
I know "upgrades" are usually cheaper - but maybe they should just give you a rebate (or immediate discount) when you send in your previous licence number - and force you to do a clean install. To help those who are not so knowlegeable - maybe you include an idiots guide to backing up files using an external HD/DVD or something like that. That should be enough for even the moderately technical person. For the idiot - maybe you include a token voucher ($20 or so) that can be used at a big box partner to help cover the cost of the upgrade for you and recover your data.
For all of the functionality and cool stuff that the iPhone does - we all know there is more that is CAN do. But...as is with Apple and Microsoft - they will hamstring and do what they "think is best" for you all in the name of customer "support."
I was inches away from gettin an iPhone 2 months ago. Now...I am not so sure now. My SonyEricsson W810i still have some legs in him.
Spot on - but you are forgetting the other "fickle, uneducated, uninformed and misinformed" gorilla in the room - and that is the American public. If you look back at ANYTHING in the past that cost a lot of lives - it would never have happened if the American public was full "informed" as to the real cost of lives. To John/Jane Q Public, lives should only be risked if John/Jane's arses are on the line - maintaining the status quo but never for advancement.
Space exploration and innovation is something that is far too important to be left in the hands of the "American public" or Congress.
The dissolved uranium is reduced to uranite (incidently a common ore that is mined for uranium) inside the bacterial bodies. So in nature, they "eat" dissolved uranium, it accumulates in their bodies, they die, the bodies settle, the bodies decompose leaving uranite. Do that for long enough and you have uranite deposits...much how bacteria oxidized the dissolved iron in the oceans to remove it from solution.
Does this make everything safe? No - just makes it easier to clean up since if can separate the bacteria from the contaminated water.
You have got to be kidding!!! Blu-Ray gives you the time you need to make popcorn, go to the bathroom, mix a drink, and make yourself comfortable - all in the time it takes to load the menu screen.
Anyway, am I the only person who actually read The Hobbit, thought it was a great book, read Lord of the Rings and thought it was good, if long-winded, and then absolutely hated the films?
I honestly enjoyed both the books and the movies. Granted - some of the stuff in the movies is crap - so total crap that I winced (yes - "lean forward" almost made me vomit in my mouth a little) - but some was just as I imagined it when I was under my covers reading it by flashlight after "bedtime". Was it the BEST MOVIE EVAR? Hell no - not even close - but it was a good flick that I dont mind popping in to watch as "junk food."
I have high hopes for "The Hobbit" and look forward to it - especially the parts with Smaug. I just hope he does not screw it up.
The thing is - what sort of "purpose" could you ever you give a clever AI? Can you motivate through "rewards" like we do with "natural intelligence" (and I use that term loosely). How are you supposed to give AI a paycheck, a vacation, or a doggie treat?
When I first took a look at this, my thought was "COOL! (no pun intended) Use the slab as a heat sink just like they do for houses in Sweden!" But my engineering logic kicked in and alarm bells went off.
1 - Implant in concrete for the lose. There is the possibility for reaction with voltaic interaction with steel as well as the chance for any reactions with the concrete. 2 - Its pretty permanent - so its not like you can relocate to the other side of the room. 3 - Electrical conductivity. Lighting? Say no more. 4 - Real heat transfer coefficient issues. Yeah, there will be some conduction between the copper and concrete, but if there are air gaps, transfer goes to crap since there will not be any air movement.
So from an engineering POV, I would scrub it. Geothermal cooling for a PC sounds cool - but its gratuitous overkill.
...if the offenders are stuffed and mounted. Maybe they can be implated with cheesey electronics and form a choir of Billy Bass!
/laughs - why not sue ZDNet China?

Anyone remember http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_bombing_of_the_Chinese_embassy_in_Belgrade?
Oops! Map was wrong and we are in the wrong house!

Not trying to be snarky - but statements along those lines are often made by slave holders in regards to rights for slaves.

...unless Kid 'n Play show up!
Maybe we could get Steve Balmer and Bill Gates to reprise the roles - not sure who would look better with the fade though.
...the danger of fire is very low - take note, Mount Wilson Observatory!
