  1. Amdahl's law, baby on Cray CTO Says Cray Computers Are Great · · Score: 1

Why you will always be wrong. Basically, clusters make use of existing networking technologies (higher overhead) and supercomputers (SIMD, MIMD, whatever) are designed to make that overhead as low as possible.

Thus, by definition, for HPC applications that can't be parallelized enough to overcome the communications overhead, super computers will always beat out clusters and have a place.

PJ edited out the car, and in the directors commentary said "What car? I don't see any car!" But in reality he was being facetious.

There certainly was a car in FOTR, I didn't catch it, and neither did he.

I realize there is a major difference in removing a tiny gaffe that most people didn't catch (and if you did, it would actually detract from the experience of being in "middle earth") to re-writing history a la Lucas. So this is the exception that PROVES the rule!

I agree with all of your points.

However if an all in one unit is cheap enough, it doesn't matter that its a single point of failure.

For example, if I get a multi disc dvd player with surround sound speakers, I bought 1 box, everythings already set up, I just connect TV and the speakers and I'm done. Is it as good as a component set? HELL NO.

But what if its "good enough?" And cheap enough ($300-$500)? Even so-so "progressive scan" dvd players beat the pants off old VHS, so I'm happy with the improvement.

And thats my point- simplicity in gear is an illusion- but if its cheap enough it becomes a viable solution.

Oh sure, they never want to take the blame, but when you have a reproducible fault ( pinpointing it down to the module for them never hurts...) they usually capitulate. They frequently aren't very happy (especially when it in some ancient protocol that nobody* uses) but they do it.

And lets say they don't want to fix the problems you find: your system doesn't make it past safety review, white paper or not. So you and them are back to square 1; and they no longer have that huge order for 100,000 units anymore. SO yeah, that NEVER happens.
