As long as your bosses know that delays aren't your fault, then you can try to motivate them. The truth is, if they aren't doing their work probably nothing you can say or do will change that.
You know, for all the crap we give Bill. I bet he would actually be pretty interesting to meet. I mean it's HIM and not us (or our parents) that made a fortune selling products that the general consumer jumped all over.
I wonder if he reads this site on a daily basis just like the rest of us. I've heard people say he's not that great of a programmer, but I bet he still knows his stuff.
For all we know, he could very well secretly have linux boxes that he plays around on.
In the end, I believe that Microsoft will use some BSD variant similar to what Macintosh has done... I mean, they copied before and it worked... Why not follow the same philosophy again?
IF they did do that... I bet slowly and surely, a WHOLE LOT of people on this site would start to reconsider windows. Not to mention the corporate world.
They ought to use it as a chance to unify packages across all distributions while they're at it.
Where does the average linux user go to get help?

A Linux User Goes Back

I consider myself average or maybe slightly above average. I'm good at configuring things once they're installed and working properly.
I can use apache, sendmail, bind and mysql quite well.
But there are a lot of things that I can't get to work and I have no idea where to get help sometimes. Luckily I have friends who know more than I do, but whenever I run into a brick wall the only place I know is to jump on openproject IRC. I run SuSE, but more often than not that room is filled with people and dead as a doorknob.
Most other rooms are filled with people who know only as much as I do and I constantly see people giving bad advice or saying things like, "I know it's right because it seems to work." Geez... You should see the DNS advice people give out sometimes... yikes.
Where does everyone go? The how-tos aren't very well maintained and there isn't a ton of consistency to how they are written. Most are horribly out of date.
Google will sometimes reveal answers, but if you have some off the wall question and you aren't even sure what to search for I often find myself up a creek.
I think as time goes on linux will obviously become more and more userfriendly, but like people have said before... it's not for everyone.
I personally only use it as a server platform (I also use Win2k), and I like it much much better than Win2k, but for a desktop system... Ugh...
Besides all the bugginess of it, I can almost use it except some of my favorite software such as Macromedia Homesite isn't available.
In the meantime, to help me transition over to linux as a desktop system, I use cygwin, putty, winscp, wincvs, windiff, and db Browser.
With those utilities I can accomplish anything that I do on a daily basis.
In particular my friends are comparing the durability of a civic vs any of the V8 based Ford Mustangs produced from 1987 to current.
We all tend to agree that Hondas do indeed last forever when driven under normal conditions.
However, where we tend to disagree is that they claim that racing a Honda and a Mustang under semi-abusive conditions, the Honda will still outlast the Mustang.
I'm going off of personal experience driving Mustangs (never driving Hondas) but I've torn down motors that have been well-maintained with 150,000+ miles on them only to find that they still bear the original factory cross hatch on the cylinder walls and the cranks only need polishing and no grinding.
I guess in general, most motors will do quite well if you take care of them.
I have a running bet with some friends. They claim that Hondas are the most reliable cars in the world. I strongly disagree but I'd like to see some numbers. How many miles did your honda have and what was it's cause of death?
I mean, if someone is a couch potatoe all day and all night only to eat, excrete and sleep, wouldn't it have the same effect?
Maybe even reading, surfing the web or anything else for that matter. I think it's easier to prove with games since they generally require more interaction and tend to keep our interest.
All I can think of are the final fantasy series games (and other squaresoft games). I'm a real nut and I've been playing them since they came out in the U.S.
I did well until I got to FF7. I had grown up a bit and went about halfway through only to get mad at myself for waisting so much time on a "stupid game" even though the game is awesome.
I did the same thing with FF8. I'm even working on FF9 right now. I'd guess I'm about 75% done with Disc 3 out of 4. I'm too enthralled with this game since it incorporates a lot of cool stuff from the older games (FF1) that I grew up with.
I have no intention of starting FFX or beyond.
Anyway, the point is this... When I play those games for hours and hours and hours, I get mad at myself because I have passed on social oppourtunities and I have been lazy and realize that I should have been doing work or sleeping instead of staying up until 6am trying to get my FF5 guys up to Level 99. (THANK GOODNESS THEY CAP IT OFF AT 99!!!!)
Just due to the lack of sleep alone, I probably kill some brain cells.
Lindows was kind of boring and very limited. Looks like it's built off of some of the debian stuff as it used apt-get.
There were a lot of simple things that happened that quickly made me realize that this configuration of Linux was not ready for the average user such as my room-mate.
1. Everytime he popped in a CD, the CD player software would start twice and both start playing. If you shut one down it would crash. 2. Certain CDs would cause it to crash completely. 3. The add 'n run feature was kind of a joke. They should have included all that software on a CD or DVD instead of trying to make a buck off of it. What good is a huge tree of categories when it's a pain in the butt to quickly try software in each category? 4. Konquerer was crashing surprisingly often.
So we booted up WinXP, and it would install fine, but for some reason it seemed not to touch the master boot record. So I booted into recovery and did fixboot and fixmbr with no effect.
We then tried to get Win2k going but after one or two reboots, the computer suddenly has lost video and gives a bunch of beep diagnostic codes.
So back to Wal-mart.com it goes. I recommended to him that if he wants to try Linux on the desktop to try SuSE 7.3 or 8.0. I think they would be much more userfriendly than Lindows.
The funny thing is, we didn't actually try to run any Windows software. We were too fed up with all the other problems!
I just found out recently that junk faxes are legal in Missouri as a court decided the previous law was un-constitutional. I haven't been able to find out much information, but faxes come at 2am from some nearly untraceable company in Florida that doesn't care one bit if they call me in the middle of the night.
I was a big fan of Total Annihilation, but I finally tried out Empire Earth and was pretty impressed. The first couple games against the computer can last a LONG LONG time. Once you learn some strategy it's not so bad.
The very first time we played it, it was two of us vs. one computer and it was a 13 hour game. We sucked!
It's fine and dandy for him to pay quest for their services and send whatever he wants over their lines... It's the companies on the receiving end taking a hit.
My company is forced to buy a full T1 line vs a burstable T1 due to the amount of bandwidth sucked up by spam. (Yes, literally, it's that bad.)
I get hundreds of spams a day on email addresses that have been around since 1995 such as webmaster, info, billing, support, postmaster, root@
Not a single one of those addresses has ever been opt-in to any list.
Software is going to be the only way to stop spam. Legislation is only going to cause more problems in the long run.
Spam should never ever be sent with invalid or mis-leading headers. There is a big difference from receiving a message from your favorite mailing list and receiving one from 587dajajkl@bbcidel.com.
Why should I even have to pay for the extra electricity used for every single spam that enters my network? If one of my users requested it fine, they're paying for their service. But all the crap that goes to random accounts really sucks for us.
It even forces me to turn off catchall accounts on certain domains.
That post wasn't flamebait. I was commending a company for having employees that were doing the right thing. Give me a break.
Microsoft should be proud that their news source isn't super biased.
It sounds like you're doing your job.
As long as your bosses know that delays aren't your fault, then you can try to motivate them. The truth is, if they aren't doing their work probably nothing you can say or do will change that.
Admittedly, I'm not very good at math, but here's what I've come up with...
If I remember my geometry correctly area of a square is (base x height) and a triangle is (base x height / 2)
Big Triangle: 5x9.5cm Area: 23.75
Small Triangle: 7x3.5cm Area: 12.25
Dual Triangle: 5x9.5 and 2x5 Area: 28.75
Square: 3x3 Area: 9
Square Triangle: 5x4.5 and 2x4.5 Area: 27
Total Area: 100.75cm
Sqrt: Approx: 10cm
Am I right so far?
I'm still not getting it.
I printed it out and cut them up. It's late, but I'm just not getting it. Any hints?
It's under the hard difficulty.
Are you sure?
Which virus do they have?
I wouldn't worry about the FBI, etc.
It's not like it's a unique infection that no one has ever seen before.
I'm actually in Missouri.
I sent it to TV instead: click2houston.com
I bcc'd you on the email.
Someone will let them know... hehehe.
They will have a field day with it!

I recently complained about junk faxes being sent to my home telephone number at 2am in the morning and received this letter back.

I was very disappointed to say the least. I'm not real sure what to do about it though.
Any ideas/suggestions?

They haven't released any sort of XP server have they?

Anyone have any insight about what can be done?
I'm curious if he meant on the webserver setup or the DNS setup.
I'm very interested in hearing an answer or if someone could point me to a reference explaining the correct way to do it, that would be great.
The way I do it works and I've always assumed it was correct. Google picks up most of our sites quite well, so I probably am doing it correct.
I guess I'm just not seeing the relation...
I think of "nerds" as computer people... programmers like myself.
I think of Anime as Japanese cartoons. Am I the only computer person out there that thinks indifferently of them?
I guess the closet correlation I can come up with is computer games which are often using pieces of Asian culture in them.
I guess my original question is, why is it news for nerds? Why not some other hobby that really isn't related such as Fish aquariums or something.
I've never quite understood it.
I see it mentioned on here a lot. I've seen a few things but have never gotten into it.
Am I missing something?

Wow... He's right!!!
Unless I'm missing something, he's got a really good point here.
