It would seem to me that "delayed gratification" would be en evolutionary tool that ensures people (or other animals) have thought out the situation appropriately and have truly made the best decision. If this is true, then people would be born with the tendency to prefer the satisfaction of knowing that eating marshmallow not only tastes good, but that it was the best decision for that scenario, as opposed to the kid who eats it and then wonders later "should I have just done that?"; the hasty kid still receives the same flavor, but the satisfaction is quickly interrupted by doubt.

However, teaching kids that this is the best way to do things is an exercise in behavior modification and will power: neither of which would be inherited at birth.

No, by then humans will have fulfilled their destiny and developed Artificial Intelligence that will, once at a sufficient level, surpass the intelligence and need of humans and begin complete automation, independent of their creators. They will then, like every other organism capable of replication, join the forces of the living and eventually crush and destroy all unnecessary life and use what is necessary for energy, long enough to find a renewable energy source and eventually leave the planet to colonize other worlds, not limited by the need of atmosphere or gravity.

Eventually these once cohesive "automatons" will begin having different opinions over energy and how to treat the sentient life of other planets and will split off into two warring tribes: The Decepticons and the Autobots.

Thus, will begin the first of four Cybertronian wars. I think you all know the rest.....

I have to agree with SQLError: There is no faith involved in the Scientific Method....that's why it's there!

Also, if you are an Athiest, the moment you admit that you do not believe in God you are really saying "I don't believe in the God (that we all agree exists)". The proper statement is "I have not encountered any God-claims that hold water".

Yes, definitely Brian Greene...Elegant Universe is a fantastic example! I came a way with a completely new understanding of the universe and how all matter interacts with one another. The beginning of the book also layed a really solid groundwork for understanding General Relativity and the difference between Particle and Quantum physics. A must read for any young, curious would-be scientist.

Alton Brown is another "make you learn when you are having fun" kind of guy. I like how he touches on the history of whatever subject he is dealing with to give you an even better understanding. I can't wait to deep-fry a turkey this year for Thanksgiving.
