I live very close to Bullitt Co., KY and I have been in the IT world for about 15 years now. In my 15 years in this area I have witnessed MANY possible security holes in different areas such as medical, accounting, educational...etc. I often wonder, is the general area to blame? Do the people of Kentucky just feel so safe in their ranch homes and open fields that no crook would ever possibly compromise the integrity of semi-southern living? I hope this is a wake up call to the business around here that it could and someday probably will happen to them.

  5. Finally? on iPhone 3GS Finally Hacked · · Score: 2, Insightful

Maybe I'm being a dick here, but saying the 3Gs has Finally been hacked is a bit of an insult to the crackers that made it happen. I mean, the thing has been out a couple weeks and the fact that it took Only 2 weeks to accomplish is a pretty great thing.

When Apple released the 3.0 firmware, there was a lull in the QuickPwn software where they had not worked out some bugs and several people had to go without an unlocked/unjailbroken iPhone for a couple days. Reading the posts on the forums, I was very disappointed in the people that were demanding that the DevTeam hurry the hell up and make their phones work again. Instead of basking in the glory of iPhone freedom, they wanted to bitch and complain that things were moving too slowly and that they couldn't use their precious iPhones to Facebook or Tweet or whatever they needed to do. I can remember back in the day, sitting on BitchX and waiting for a crack-team to post the newest keygen for whatever the latest release of (game/software, etc...) and being patient about it because those guys were doing something I couldn't. They were providing a service that was completely free and that I had no right bitching at them about taking too long to add it to their servbots.

I'm too young to know if kids in past generations were this disrespectful to people that were doing favors for the community for free, but I'm too old to know if this is something that all young people do nowadays. Is this what happens when we make so many things quickly and easily accessible? I think kids today would do well to learn a little patience and develop an appreciation for how difficult some things in life can be, even if to them it's just a click away.

    Now get off my lawn!

  14. Trend Micro/Avast! on Central Anti-Virus For Small Business? · · Score: 0

We use Trend Micro Officescan here. Looks like the pricing is around $25/user/year and it does a really good job of keeping out malware of any sort. It is all centrally managed and can be pushed out across the domain if you like and you can also implement content filtering. Of course, the downside to this is that you have to install the server part on a Windows server, but picking up a Win2k3 SMB license is only a few hundred dollars.

I can persoanally vouch for Avast! as well. They have really good catch-rate and you should be able to cover yourself for around $1000, both Windows and Linux.

  16. Re:Phone Viruses on Hackers Find Remote iPhone Crack · · Score: 0

I can't think of an instance where any iPhone talks to another iPhone. You'd have to write the virus with the ability to route through AT$T's network to other iPhone handsets. If you are going to do that, then you may as well write the code to infiltrate AT$T directly...I would imagine there is much more valuable information in AT$T's database of subscribers than on any given iPhone.

Maybe a suitable injection method, without having to try and figure out how to hack the carrier, would be to write the malicious code into a seemingly legitimate app and post it on the app store. If the only thing it was doing was sitting there idle and awaiting instructions, would it be that hard to detect? Even if Apple finds the virus I'm sure at least a few people would have gotten a hold of it before it was yanked.

I have to disagree. You get to know people personally then you will find yourself going over for a barbecue or some sporting event and you will undoubtedly be led into the office where their kids have full reign over the computers in that room and have gunked them up with malware and peanut butter and you will be asked to "take a quick look". Before you know it, 3 hours have gone by and you have missed whatever you were invited over to do in the first place AND you won't get paid. I completely agree with you. Allow me to clarify: I think the part that is sad is the fact that is has to be MADE to do what it was never created to do in the first place. All the features that we get when we jailbreak the phone should just come with the device out of the box. Perhaps when UNICEF gets into the smart-device manufacturing business then we will get a fully capable iPhone without having to hack it...until then, it's $299 for a "half usable" device.
