Because SCO violated the licence for only one of the peices of software, you must have been wronged to revoke licence under the terms of the GPL. OTOH, another reading of the GPL could be agrued that the violating company loses all rights to distribute all software licenced under the GPL, but I don't think that clause will hold up in court. I'll have my attorney check it out some time.
Ummmm,,,,,, but I've used it as a drop in replacement for Windows NT 4 Honestly there are a lot of technical advantages to it, ESPECAILY in a small network, and once any of them are set up, you just leave them in the corner, make sure they get enough air flow, and let them run.
Lotus 123 is a wonderfull spreadsheet, it comes with SmartSuite, which if you're not tied into MS Office is a wonderfull office suite, it even beats OO.o for interoperablity. It even passes the "Mom" test, in a sligltly modified way. Actualy it passes the Grandfather test. My grandfather uses WordPro for all his word processing, even though he now hasx Word on his machine. He also uses Netscape 4.7 for his web browsing and e-mail. Now if IBM would just do a Linux port of SmartSuite...
Simple solution, Install Linux instead, then all you have to pay for is comercial software and maybe the first time a small cost for a set of CDs. Then your small buisiness can breathe a sigh of relief when your productivity increases because of less downtime, and you start making more money after spending less.
What the fuck are you refering to with windows being easy to get a full network setup compared to linux? Last I checked the ONLY think missing out of the box in most linux distros is a groupware server, an IRC server, and drafting software. and you can use hacks for most of those functions. The thing that linux gets dinged on all the time is the fact that most defaut installs are "Wide open" with all the services you may or may not want running their ass off. Once the service is set up, setting up content is about the same on either OS. Plus, you save a shitload on licencing costs if you go with the linux solution. If you look at what servers do, Windows is the one that's playing catchup. Linux is already where you want it.

Um, haven't you read ESR's homepage? Linux geeks with guns happens like, every year. OTOH, anything that helps my cousin, who is a soldier, survive and come back home, I'm all for. Especialy since I'm not to convinced of the sactity of human life. I'm not advocating the wanton killing of everyone, but come on, everyone dies, and sometimes war IS neccacary. But then again, maybe the fact that for most of my life I've had food on my table because of military spending infuences my judgement. Just remeber, those who eat meat are just a guilty as the butcher. So anyone in the world who says war doesn't solve anything, or that war is not a valid means of diplomacy, needs to examile themselves. Because everyone who is unwilling to fight wars, and many who were willing to fight wars have been extermiated.
Um, I'm sorry, You seem to have yourself confused with someone clever. plants that reproduce SEXUALY have seeds or spores. Bannana's don't reproduce sexualy, so they don't have seeds. it's kinda like seedless grapes, At one point in time they reproduced sexualy, but now the seeds are non-viable, so they can't reproduce. because the seeds are non-viable they also don't grow significantly. This also means that since they reproduce by asexual means they evolve faster (yeah realy) but are less resistant to disease and parasites (the real reason for sexual reproduction)
then set a home directory on your domain controlers, I mean this isn't diffult. then every student sees their home directory as H drive, and star office is willing to belive it's a local drive.
Ok, here's the difference between those. win2k, use remote administration tool do one box at a time, Unix, Install unix you want on one drive, install any Unix OS on another, put both and one blank drive in third box, copy the ENTIRE instalation from source disk to blank disk, no fuss no muss no hassle. with a few command line switches it's even easier, no need for the third disk, but this is the easiest way. windows won't allow you this sort of flexability. if you use identical drives for all your machines you can just do "dd if= of= and it does a bit copy of the disk, JUST LIKE GHOST. You don't even have to partion the blank drive first because the partion table is also copied, (hence my comment about this being the easier way)
What the hell are you talking about? the GPL allows for him to chage $5 to copy the damned CD, as long as he provides the source for any binary programs on the CD. All he's doing is encouraging the students to return the disks. and $5 isn't that much for the hassle of copying a CD to replace one a student doesn't bring back. Oh, and sorry for feeding the troll
I'd rather have the project on a linux on intel box, that gives you the best of everything. the stability of linux, btw, I'm NOT impressed by the stabitly of MAC OS. Honstly in my experiance Windows NT is better for stabilty and power.
Um, you mean like video games? but anyway, video post production is one of the Big Things Macs are sold for. Since they are less than great at one of their PRIMARY functions that is an indication that the people who use them are not nececarily using the best tool for the job, supporting the point of the article. OTOH I feel perfectly comforable using Windows, Linux, Mac, or learning a totaly new tool to get my objectives completed. I prefer Linux, but I can and do use all 3 for different things.
um, just a point, but don't iff and if have different meanings? if has the floolwing truth structiure a | b | if a, b t | t | t t | f | f f | t | t f | f | t whereas iff has this sturcture a | b | iff a, b t | t | t t | f | f f | t | f f | f | t
so the reason mathmatics uses iff or if is actualy based on a particular instance, however using var++; or var+=1; is purely a style choice.
Actualy there were a few themes in the Plus Pack that did reverse the mouse buttons. I found this out the hard way and had to manualy change the mouse back to right handed.
bDude, study the semantics of what you are saying. It won't supercede the first or any other ammendment. Like you said anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding. meaning that since there is contrary regulations in the constitution that portion of the treaty is null and void in the US. Treaties are no different than any other law as far as the courts are concerned. Besides which, I don't think there was anywere in the article that said the US was considering signing the treaty.
Well, it realy depends on the situation of the boxes in question. If the Windows 98 boxes are behind a corporate firewall and used as workstations for accountants or secretaries, then yes it is the system administrators fault. if they are in a home, then it is the owners fault, but the owner is acting as the system administrator, so still it's the system administrators fault. the fewer boxes one has to monitor the more closly one can monitor them the more boxes one has to monitor the more securly one should set up ones firewall.
No way, Methodist is the best, it's highly configurable, and is updated often. Baptisim is not very compatable with other Cristianities. of course there are also the non-Christan religouns. Of course then you have to wory about ineroperability. Judiasm has histroicaly had inerop problems, but the leader of the Catholic kenel project has been working on improving this.
I sacrifice my karma for humor, do you worst moderators.
The difference between detonating a nuclear weapon and running a virus is this: you cannot safely detonate a nuclear weapon, but a virus can be executed and studied under controlled conditions. Hey, I thought that there were a couple of instances that nuclear bombs were safely set off, most of them in a backwater part of the US southwest. the conditions for safely setting off a nuclear bomb are pretty much the same as for a computer worm.
isolate destructive device from people who can be hurt by it. with the worm this means an isolated network, with the nuke an out ot the way part of new mexico.
get all damageable entities out of the destructive path before activation of the destructive mechanism.
Oh come on, look at the alternive. I'd pick Bush even if I wasn't a republican over "I invened the internet" Gore. If/.ers are against Bush, they simply won't go to the Polls. I mean look at the demographic realisticly. I use Linux because it outpreforms Windows and I can play with the source. That and I like the FREEDOM, that's speach, not beer. Look at Republican ideology and Libertarian ideolgy closer. Unless I am mistaken most slashdoters are Libertarian. Then look at democarat ideology. it's a no brainer choice.
I have an even better Idea, most end users at least obliquly know computer gurus. I know I am more likely to respond to a face to face request for a specific improvement in user interface than a vauge sor of whining. Also most programers know not so computer literate people. Why not grab your least computer litterate friend who would be interested in the project and plop him/her down and ask for sugestions? honelstly that's the only way to design good interfaces for the novices. since the programer will know what sort of additional fucntionality he/she wants the programer can then add extra wiz-bang without getting in the way of the novice. it becomes a win-win sitution
I just thought about it, you know the Hard drive in my Pentum pro (the worst of the worst heat wize for a microcomputer) are louder than the CPU fan. it's not even a very fast hard drive, only 5400 rpm. Are you sure it's the CPU fan that bother you. BTW the loudest fan on a PII is the power supply, I can't even hear the processor fan on mine. Now, if you are willing to work without a fan on your power supply, I hope you don't leave you mac up as long as I leave my PCs up. The last time my P pro went down was during a black out.
