1) Global warming. We have less snow in the mountains with smaller runoffs. 2) Global warming. Did I say that? This year we don't have enough rain, nor water. It is resulting in the problem that the Rhein traffic has to be restrained.
Switzerland having infinite water is a myth and the last few years have been very hard. This is why they want to focus more on Wind, or Solar.
No I do think people are missing a point. I think what will happen is that people will be allowed and encouraged to bring their own devices. BUT those devices will be treated as security risks. Then to get into the network it will be a sort of private cloud type situation.
Think of it as follows; you bring your iphone and you access your corporate network using a terminal. That terminal does not let you share with the local environment. It is completely closed off from your own data. I have already seen some prototypes in the investment banking field.
Shhh this is something computer geeks thought out... Economics need not apply!
Sorry for being too cynical. But as somebody who makes his living managing his own money the problems you alluded to are the problems I saw when I read the theory behind BitCoin. BitCoin like Gold is tilted to favor those who are in the best position to exploit it. Namely those with the resources. It screws over everybody else...
And this is why I hate BitCoin. When I saw their model I just shook my head. Bitcoin is just as biased as say gold or whatever else is supposed to be the good currency. For example who wins with a gold hardbacked currency? Any country that happens to have a motherload of gold on their lands. Who loses? Anybody who doesn't have gold on their land.
The same goes for BitCoin, it is the geeks that win, but I guess that the nature of this beast. BitCoin is tilting it in the favor for themselves the "underappreciated" geek. Yeah, whatever... I will stick with EUR's and USD's...
I like software, its a good thing, but man we are going downhill quick! Its nice that facebook exists, but its just a communications platform. Its not the cure to cancer! I wish more research would go into things like green energy! Oh wait, I forgot that requires work, thought and energy! Its easier to crank out stuff for facebook!!!!
Thank-you... Somebody actually has some business understanding!
Look at the fine details of the deal. Nokia gets to customize the OS. It's THEIR'S! Nobody got such a sweet deal with Window Phones. Microsoft in this deal forced vendors to manufacture to certain specs, Nokia has a "got out of jail card".
What people also fail to realize is that Nokia software SUCKS! Not just a little bit, but a whole lot! They had oodles of good software and what did they do with it? Nothing, nada, zip! Of course many argue it was the strong Symbian contingent within Nokia that killed things. I could buy that as the Windows enterprise within Microsoft is very very very strong.
I actually think that with this deal Nokia will do very very well. Nokia builds GOOD hardware! And they know how to build stylish hardware. With this deal they get to focus on that, and only that! Go figure do what you are strong in...
"We are now aware that the police have used traffic information that you have helped to create to place speed cameras at dangerous locations where the average speed is higher than the legally allowed speed limit," he says.
cough *BS* cough They are using it to make more money and just place the cameras where the probability is higher to make money! Thanks TOM TOM your company was going downhill, but it will REALLY go downhill now!
This is very true. In the US I very often find that people give the rich a get out of jail card because they "think" they will be rich one day. I am for low taxes, live a country that has very low taxes. But even here there are rumblings that there are a limit to low taxes and that everybody has to pay taxes, including corporations.
Here is how I would solve the corporate tax issue. If you don't pay taxes in the country since you decided to move away, cool so be it. However, since you are still doing a billion dollars worth of business we will consider that profit and you will have to pay taxes on it. Oh you don't like that? Too bad, then don't sell your products here.
The moment you wave that in front of the corporation their tune will change pronto! The shareholder of corporations demand profit, and revenue. If you decide to not sell in a particular country then that means they are missing revenue. That will hurt their bottom line! And it will put them on level footing with the local corporations that can't afford to outsource or hire fancy tax lawyers.
As an engineer that went into the financial industry let me tell you why:
1) It pays more (duh) 2) It is more exciting from an algo point of view 3) It is more exciting from a thought point of view
I love building structured products and building automated trading routines. Want to know what sucks? Patents! I can't innovate anymore because I have to worry about some corporation or patent troll stopping me from building my toy. And if I wanted to patent it would literally cost ten's of thousands! The idea that patents are there to protect the little guy is a pile of hot steaming s**t.
And if for some instance I could patent something the bar to get it to market is absolutely stunning! The entire market is against the little guy the innovater. If America was really interested in new technology jobs they would stop the crony capitalism. For example did you know GE paid zero taxes? That lost income has to be made up somewhere. Since it is not GE, guess where it is?
Finally, there are female quotas, and minority quota's. I say we need techy quota's in politics. Say 35% of all politicians must have techy cred! Stop the lawyer assault in politics.
Ok here is the deal in very very simple examples C++ is faster. Namely because you can override the safety nets. For example if I access memory using pointers. BUT if I add bounds checking, and other things that C# gives me C++ is not faster. I write MonteCarlo code in C# and have found there are things you do and don't do in C#. If you stick to those things there is absolutely ZERO advantage to C++. In fact I found that if you are very careful you can almost match raw C++ (about 10% slower). Remember the real problems in C++ are not the structural things, but the wennie that allocated memory incorrectly writes over a single byte that is used 1,000 cycles later...
What gets my goat with C++ is that I have seen this debate before. Namely I used to write Fortran code in University (hated every moment as I wanted to write C++). And in those days Fortran blew the doors off C++. But with C++ you got many things that were just downright painful in Fortran. Well we are at the same moment in time with C++.
Anybody who starts a new project in C++ is really missing the boat. There is zero reason to use it unless you are doing very low level things. If you understand what is fast and slow in Java or C# then those languages are perfect.
While I am uneasy about patents, a case for truly innovative products can be made. But this is not innovation. This is patenting whatever one can. Like:
Enable display of a webpage’s content before the background image is received, allowing users to interact with the page faster;
You have got to be effen kidding me. That's a patent? Who was the bonehead that thought something like that is innovation?
You are not going to get any better rating for that comment, but frankly your answer is the best.
When people say they are going to get ready, well they ain't gonna be ready. Why? Simple, the 4 unknowns. Rumsfeld talked about the 3, and forgot about the unkown knowns. Namely we think it can't happen to us.
So for example when people say they have guns they say, "oh we are ready to be armed and take on anybody that takes our food". What they forget is that if life is that dire they would not last 10 minutes because those people who will win are the gangsta's! You see they will take anything from anybody, and the ones who protect themselves are not equipped to deal with the trauma of having to shoot people.
The gangsta's are used to chaos, they are used using a gun to shoot and kill people. The ones in this group imo could not defend themselves if their life depended on it. I am willing to bet that one. So your answer imo is the best answer because it means getting out of the way!
And quite frankly a thousand Nokia employees who went on strike? Here is my suggestion, FIRE THEM!
Seriously this is the dead wood that dragged Nokia down. I am again, but used to be a Nokia shareholder. Two years ago I saw the writing on the wall. When Nokia failed with their first touchscreen smartphone I knew Nokia was finished. Even though I complained as a shareholder my comments fell on deaf ears. Well look where they are now.
Had they actually focused on developing good software maybe Nokia would not be the in the position they are now. Thus I say FIRE these employees!!!
And here is the problem, you say: " Has anyone even considered that women dont WANT to write wikipedia articles?"
This in itself is the old boys club mentality. Instead of trying to figure out why women might not like to write articles you go on and think it is because women don't want to. In other words you are putting the blame on the woman, instead of figuring out what is wrong with the process.
Wait I disagree with this. There is no such thing as unbiased. We are all biased towards something.
Let me explain. Take any moment in life, and try to describe it. We can't describe every facet of it, since that would result in information overflow. Thus we narrow it down to a subset. And here is the rub. What subset will it be narrowed down to? Answer, to the subset that the individual thinks is the true answer. Hence we let our biases guide what we think are facts.
Thus while we write "unbiased" and only facts, it is the facts that we want to hear and read about.
I can completely understand the problem that there are not enough females commenting in wikipedia.
No the problem is that Microsoft still made an error.
Let me illustrate. In logic that has any complexity there are overlapping regions. This means you are unable to distinguish between a cheater and non cheater. But the problem is that you need to decide how to filter out that crowd. So you narrow down the logic and throw up some more rules.
The problem is that the logic assumes that the actors are normal humans, and normal cheaters. This is ok because the logic is hindsight biased. What the logic can integrate are new cases, and this could be a new case. Thus what Microsoft and most corporations do is employ somebody to look over the data. But here is the rub, does this person have the experience to understand this situation?
I say NO, because this is a kid with autism! It is understandable that this throws a new curve. So how do you do deal with this potentially? Again you put in a catch that if somebody makes 10 gains one week, and 400 gains the next that there is a cheat. But this YET AGAIN raises the issue that you have been given a case that can be a cheat or non-cheat and you have no evidence to sway you either way.
In a legal court system the answer is innocent since there is not enough evidence. However, I am guessing MSFT is swaying guilty as they only care about their gaming system and they think that most probably this is a cheat and cheats hamper the game. Understandable from a corporate perspective, but idiotic from a human perspective!
The best answer that Microsoft could have given in this situation is as follows:
1) You are cheat 2) Mother calls and screams my son is autistic 3) Microsoft backs off and puts the son on probation for 3 months, gives him all of their latest games.
Why? Simple, Microsoft needs new data and this is a perfect opportunity to get new data. So they stoke the kid with games, track him like a hawk and have the ability to determine whether or not he is really cheating.
Also EVEN if the kid really cheated the publicity MSFT gets from this is dumb!
This is the kind of crap that keeps people from thinking straight. Video games do affect people. If you play them every now and then its normal. BUT if you play them to the point where you can't pry yourself away from them, then you have problems. For example if I eat like a pig and can't stop eating nobody would ever say, "oh no problem there." Or if you read, read, and read, and read to the point where you drone out reality everybody would say, "oh there is a problem." So why on this green earth can't people in slashdot admit that if you overdose on gaming then you have a problem!!!! Addiction, is an addiction and gaming is a vent for that addiction.
It is easy to setup a secure system. In fact I would argue it would be an even more secure system. Namely you create hard DMZ zones. So for examples developers would have access to version control systems, and development virtual machines that run a plain vanilla server environment. Then once it works there the source code imported back into the security zone. In the security zone the code would auto compile and run as per instructions given by the developer.
Imagine that, it would be like cloud computing and I would argue it would be safe safe safe because only a very very small subset of people are allowed access to the critical information.
And if you have to have access to the internal system, then that is why we have things like remote logins...
Obviously you have not worked in the real world...
Ask any car mechanic on who owns the tools... Sure the mechanic does not buy the big and expensive tools. BUT mechanics are expected to bring their own toolbox.
To get my mechanical engineering degree I worked as a tool and die maker. And I had to buy my own tools. Was not cheap...
How about the United States do a house cleaning on their policies? And how about the United States go back to what the constitution was all about? Maybe then you would not need to worry about this crap! Oh wait that's too simple and all of the agencies would be out of a job. Can't have that now can we!
When I went through university 1987 to 1992 we did not have laptops in the class. But what we did have were people who slept through the entire class. During those days you hoped that nobody started snoring! I kid you not here! Only once did somebody end up snoring. The point is that people will goof off and these days instead of catching sleeping you surf the web. So get used to it! For one year the sleeping got so bad for our engineering class that they stopped giving lectures before 9:30. We literally had about 2/3 of the class sleeping during 8:30 lectures.
eh.... NO....
I live here and we have some serious problems.
1) Global warming. We have less snow in the mountains with smaller runoffs.
2) Global warming. Did I say that? This year we don't have enough rain, nor water. It is resulting in the problem that the Rhein traffic has to be restrained.

The FAQ is a techie FAQ, it is not an economics based FAQ!
