I know how you feel. I graduated from the Engineering faculty.
What makes me sad is that they are forcing a mandatory course of C#. It is not that I do not like C# because I do. What makes me sad is that now students will HAVE to get specific tools and environments. Those that like other environments will be shafted. Ok there is C# on LINUX, but lets be real, will you be able to get graded on projects created on UNIX, that do not have an easy to open project folder? Not likely...
When we learned programming we did it with languages that showed specific concepts and were neutral. I guess those days are gone!
That is what gets to me too. When I read the article the "intelligence" agency considered cheaters and odd's players both bad. Gee whiz!
Odd's players are legal and only play the odds to improve their situation. Cheaters are that cheaters.
The Gambling houses should be forced to let in people who consistently win. Because those that consistently loose and are forced to pay debts in interesting ways, etc are always allowed in. From a social point of view I have to say casinos are scum. They want people to beg and squander their money, while not taking any of the responsibility.
That's right... You will not be supporting DeBeers at all! NOT!
All of the Canadian Diamond mines have been bought by DeBeers so that the price of diamonds does not go soft. This is because the Canadian diamond mines hold a HUGE respository of diamonds. One of the largest.
Me personally I refuse to buy a diamond because it is absolutely artificial. Ok there is tradition and the likes, but even there are limits on that topic. Do something original.... Get her some native jewelry or approved coral or other truly rare item.
The question that begs asking is if we actually need 64 bits. While the point of oodles of memory, etc can be made, consider google. Google has oodles of CPU's working together. 64 bits will buy them nothing. And somehow I tend to think this is how computing will go.
And also consider the fact that quite a few companies have 64 bits, Digital, Sun. And did the world change? Not really...
Now here is food for thought. I read somewhere that Stephen Hawkings and somebody else were debating about some formula. (Recent deabte) And Stephen Hawkings could not understand why the formula did not work. For fun he tried and created "imaginary time". Time with multiple dimensions. And in this imaginary time there is no beginning and no end.
This tells us one of two things. 1) He forced a square peg through a round hole to make the darn formula fit. 2) Or the hole was square to start with, even though we all believed that it was round.
Now going on two, imagine the following. There is no beginning and there is no ending. In other words when we ask where did it all start, it started nowhere and everywhere. Ok you still say but that still had to have a starting point. But the answer is no, there is no start and no end. What we perceive as time is not time. Just a temporary existance before we disappear again.
Cordless telephones, wireless devices, etc. In Europe basically all devices have become wireless, including my weather station, cordless telephone, cell phone, headphones for my speakers, etc.
Your rebuttal may be, but we can get those here too. Well yes, but most of those things have to be the most butt ugly devices I have ever seen. EG wireless home telephones in Europe are small, use standard batteries, are encrypted by default and can have multiple phones per base station from different manufacturers. What was my solution? I buy all my household devices that are wireless in Europe. BTW they are not legal in North America because the bands that they use have been not been legislated.
DVD players in North America are mostly region one only. Outside of Region 1 most DVD players do not even check, they just play any ol DVD.
Cars from Europe cannot easily be imported into the US and Canada unless they are made for that market. However, North American cars can be imported into Europe. Why can they not be imported into the US? Because they are not North American made. I know because I had to import a car. Why did it work? Because the car was a Jeep which was made in the US. The borders use the argument safety, but that is bull since there are only a couple of small changes that need to be made. How do people import grey market cars? They scam and lie!
Sure these things are not entirely related to the net, but the free flow of information and conditions are starting change as stated in the original article.
Not being an American citizen I do see the problems presented. The USA has a wonderful (meant seriously) constitution. When the founding fathers created the US they knew what they wanted and how to achieve.
Sadly though in the last ten years that has not been the case. The USA of 1776 is not the USA of 2002 in any form whatsoever. Those values held precious back then have been given up slowly bit by bit in the name of "security", "good for the people", etc, etc.
Creating a second Internet is simply an option so that the people are not at whim of a politician in another country. Not a nice situation, but giving the current adminstration and its pro-Big company stance, totally understandable....
Having gone through the PowerPC vs x86 life I have to say in the end x86 has won. Ok sure you can get the OS to run on most platforms, but what about the apps? THat is where the x86 platform wins hands down. Even with Open Source I have build my own software to get it to run on PowerPC. Sometimes it would not compile because the autoconf files or libraries were not updated to include PowerPC. And what little commercial software there is on LINUX is primarily x86 compiled. In the end I simply gave up. Apple has nice hardware, but you get much more mileage for your buck on x86.
First that is a very narrow minded attitude. This is the reason why people get annoyed at American attitudes. Yes people want some parts of the American dream. But there is nothing wrong with that. Just like how Americans want part of the European dream, by driving European vehicles or using Swiss Showers (which btw I have no idea ever existed and I live in Switzerland).
The problem is that many American corps have an in your face attitude, whereas other global companies are not quite that bad. Consider Nestle, which is the biggest producer of food globally and they produce an almost majority of the processed food consumed by Americans. Does the average American know that? Not likely because Nestle is very deversified and adjusts their food to local cultures. Then consider Walmart, which tries to do everything their way. It works in the US, partially Canada and partially Mexico, but they are getting their butt kicked in Europe. Consider the opposite case of Carrefour which is kicking Walmarts butt globally by respecting local cultures. Not all American corps do this. A prime example are the music labels and MTV. They adjust their content respective to each country. In India MTV is VERY different than MTV in America or MTV in Europe. MTV adjusts to local tastes and languages. Or even CNN. CNN Europe (CNN Spain, CNN Italy, CNN Germany) is not CNN America.
That is my point. There are ways to become a dominate company globally...
And there you fell for the trap. Hook line and sinker! Thanks...
The problem is that you think that French and California Cabris are two single distinct entities. When in fact a California Cabris is a single grower with a trademark like Coca Cola and a French Cabris has many growers. And just like you said now with your diference you will associate one bad French Cabris as all French Cabris being bad, since there is only a French Cabris and a Californian Cabris.
I have no idea why Star Bucks Espresso in Canada tastes worse. I am guessing they use a sub-standard coffee. It has a bitter rough cut. You know when they take a sub-grade bean that is either bad or burnt too long.
But overall Star Bucks impressed me at their double espresso's. One time while at a conference in San Jose I had three double espresso's in a row. I just felt like it and they were good, especially with muffins. Needless to say I was bouncing off the wall on hyper drive.
And here is the point to a T. I drink wine and really like it. But the problem in the wine community is that people in Europe are stuck up about American wines because marketing companies do these dumb stunts. There are good American wines, but those get tarnished by corporations that only see profit. And all of this cummulates into hate of America, when it was just a few dumb companies.
What I sometimes miss among some American corporations and some American politicians is a global attitude.
I think the problem with American culture is that it tends suck you in and forget about the others.
Let me give you an example. In the US there is a wine company that sells itself as Cabris, which is actually a region in France that is know to sell a good white wine. Well the American company took advantage of this to "con" people. The French region on the other hand has problems now because people get confused by the marketing message.
The problem of American culture is not the American's themselves, but the companies that take advantage of situations. Corporations in their quest for profits and bigger market share do not care a rat's butt about culture. Just more money. And in the past that has not been a problem. But now in a global economy that is a problem. Since it means some things will be lost, even though they should not be.
The American corporations are just too damm efficient at taking over the world. Result is hatred. Whenever you see people hating America, do you see people hating individual American's? Nope just icons, flag, McDonalds, jeans, etc.
I think that the challenge of this century will not be tech, or political, but social. This century will be the century when humanity is tested to see if we can truly live together! Or if we are doomed to be fighting each other. We have the technology to destroy each other and we have the means to live together.
Your comment would make a lot more sense if it actually were Europeans making the comments. Check the facts a bit. The site hosting the article is PBS, which is American. And the people writing the stories are Americans. So no Europeans here!
Yeah, but the question is, is this real coffee? When I drink things like a lattee from Star Bucks or whatever else it tastes like coffee flavoured milk or muddy water. I drink double Espresso's at a time and if I were to have large volumes of that I would be bouncing off the walls.
Having said that though, Star Buck's double espresso's are not bad. Only in Canada do Star Buck espresso's suck. What sucks is that some Star Bucks do not have espresso cups and hence use regular cups. It looks so sad to have so little coffee in such a large cup. I keep asking the people if that is a double espresso. And they say, as sad as it looks,yupe....
I read through the various articles and one point was missed. Why IPaq? Why not a notebook a Palm, a Newton, etc? And yet nobody really said anything about this.
This is a scary notion that an IPaq must be used. it is sort of like saying to study at this college you must drive this car. When I went through engineering we could choose the calculating device so long as it fufilled a certain subset of calculations.
Having used SAP DB as well, I have to agree. IT IS SO DAMM COMPLICATED. Makes Oracle look user friendly. I do agree SAP DB is better and has many "professional" features.
However, since it is damm hard to use and build I do not play around with it. As an example look how easy it is to build MySQL, Apache and PHP. DEAD SIMPLE. And look what are the biggest tools LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) or WAMP (Windows, Apache, MySQL and PHP).
I use an Anti-Spamming tool. And because it is based on Fuzzy logic and ratings of email it works VERY WELL. This will also continue on in the future since it filters out anybody who wants to sell me something or etc...
As a result I am one happy camper. I can keep my old email address and not have to worry about the tons spam...
I think part of the problem is not the GM itself, but the problem of planting. Big corps have taken farmers to court for planting crops that they did not plant. In one case a farmer was cross-polinated by another farmer (accident) and then that farmer was sued because he used his own seed.
The problem was that the cross-polination caused the farmers seed to change into the patented seed. The big corps wanted him to stop planting that seed since it was their IP. The farmer said, you have got to be kidding since the cross-polination happened by accident. Result the big corps won and the farmer had to go and buy totally new seed.
In Zimbabwe and India those concerns are the same. Today's generousity becomes tomorrows big corp greed. Sorry, but USAID should be more concerned about world stances on things. Personally "the beggers cannot be choosers" stance may be appropriate, but could that stance be used in a court of law? Not likely!
Absolutely. My wife used to work with somebody who was born and raised in Zimbawe. He loves the country and the people. And he wants to go back. But the reality is that there is a bonehead running the country.
What I do not understand is why leaders like this act like this. As somebody pointed out maybe Mugabe is a moron!
Why do you assume that this company needs to sell in the US and Canada to make money? The original company that designed this is based in Europe (namely Finnland). And there lower impact on the forest ground is extremely important. In Europe there is more selective logging than elsewhere and hence something like this would go miles.
North America does not practice that much selective logging. Most of it is clear cut, with replanting. The only place where selective logging is partially used is on the West Coast. On the West Coast selective logging must be used because otherwise there would be no more grand trees.
But imagine if all of your spam mail were addressed "Occupant". LIFE WOULD ME MUCHO EASIER in terms of filtering spam. Right now we have a battle of the SPAMMERS vs SPAM busters... Just like virus writers.
OK so instead of getting your head lopped off you get get bitten often in little bits. Piranas use the little often bits. And in either case you still end up dying.
Configuration information is just as ugly in LINUX as it is in Windows. Once I tried to figure out how certain things get set and I learned that LINUX now dynamically generates things. And what I tried to change were my networking settings, but not just the DNS, but card type, etc, etc...
I do not believe in donations, because donations is not a sustainable business model. Money is earned and there are plenty of good LINUX companies. Specifically I buy software from RedHat (professional), Yellow Dog with full support, Linux Journal, etc. So I do what I preach...
I know how you feel. I graduated from the Engineering faculty.
