  2. Consider using a CDN on Webhosting For A Large Art Project? · · Score: 3, Informative

You should consider using a Cloud CDN like Rackspace CloudFiles or Amazon S3. They're designed purely for cheap, efficient and fast storage and delivery. While you can't SSH into one, you can certainly set up rsync without incident and the data can be called from a site hosted anywhere.

  3. CentOS on Newb-Friendly Linux Flavor For LAMP Server? · · Score: 3, Informative

CentOS and RHEL have become the industry standard for LAMP setups, for whatever its worth. Given that you probably don't need a support contract, CentOS 6 would fit the bill nicely. A free control panel like Webmin would probably make your life a bit easier in the configuration department.

  4. Results of my own 3g test on Testing 3G Networks Across the US · · Score: 1

The company I work for keeps a pool of aircards for employees who travel (mostly sprint, but we also have two verizon and two at&t). I took one from all three providers on a trip to run my own speed test about a year ago - tested them on a drive up from Las Vegas through Los Angeles, Monterey, San Francisco to Sacramento. The Sprint was consistently the fastest (I'd usually get download rates around 1.2-1.4mbps - did not test for upload) and seemed to get the best reception in most places (particularly while on the move and not in a major city, it would still remain on their 3g network). The AT&T was the true speed king, topping out around 1.8mbps downstream as I recall, but only in the middle of Los Angeles and San Francisco - anywhere else, it had spotty connectivity and would frequently drop down to the EDGE network. I never got past 900kbps on the Verizon and it also seemed to drop to "2.5g" quite often. I now carry one of the Sprint aircards with me at all times, and you'd have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

One other thing I found - not all aircards are alike. I tested through 4 of the Sprint aircards from the same location and found that two of them were consistently much faster than the other two to the tune of around 250kbps on average. All were the same model (Novotel EX720).

Testing was all done on my Macbook Pro.

One of our offices needed a couple of PC's and I ordered two through Alienware - everything went through fine and they were set to arrive two weeks later.

Three weeks after I placed the order, Alienware informed me that they hadn't built or shipped the computers because I had asked that they be shipped to an address other than the CC billing address.

I'll never do business with that company again.

  7. Re:Emphasis on perfect control is wrong. on Gaming Mice Get Benchmarked · · Score: 1

Perfect Control actually comes into play drastically when you look at a large portion of professional gamers - this test was done by an FPS-centric pro gaming site, after all. Conventional wisdom for gamers - High Sens players want a higher DPI, Low-Sens players want control at high speeds.

A good number of fps gamers will opt for a low mouse speed with no acceleration and a large mousing surface - this allows for a good deal of movement precision since the turning rate is fixed no matter how fast you go, and you can move more precisely by simply slowing down. The disadvantage, however, is the fact that you need to move VERY quickly to achieve 90 and 180 degree turns. This is why the emphasis on "Perfect Control" is relevant.

  11. I hate to break it to you guys... on Do You Care if Your Website is W3C Compliant? · · Score: 3, Insightful

but I don't think W3C qualifies as a "standard" - it's simply a guideline at this point, and as much as we all might like it to evolve into a true standard, it doesn't qualify when only one or two obscure browsers properly support it. Granted, IE's marketshare has fallen in recent years, but it still boasts a claim to well over 80% of the browser market, and as long as it maintains such a vast lead, IE compliance IS the standard whether we like it or not.

Flame on, but remember that I am on your side here - just more of a realist ;).

Easier to use and more logical? That's debatable.. Easier to use and more logical in scientific calculation - sure.. easier to use and more logical in practical applications? I would disagree.. The imperial system is far more practical for everyday tasks; having steps based on fourths, etc, instead of tenths allows for quick division into thirds, for example.. and the system itself revolves around standards that are far more easily estimated and/or derived (say you wanted to recreate farenheit, all you would need to do was measure 64 intervals between something frozen and body temperature)..
