It is a matter of self-interest. Most religion to some degree is based on "do this or you won't get this", "behave this way or you'll be left out". Some religion like *coughs* Catholicism, shell out "eternal paradise" and "eternal suffering" and "immortal soul" for following their rules strictly.

I was raised Catholic with a heavy hand, I mildly learnt about Judaism, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhism, Shinto, Wiccan, mostly out of curiosity and comparison purposes. Even read through half the bible mostly out of boredom, but parts of it was "required".

    Be meek, humble, generous.

    Matthew 5
"When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying"

    The Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

It's all about self-interest, our immortal soul, etc. Sure some are zealots taking the word of prophets too far. Sure some self-interest isn't particularly bad, but don't fool yourself into thinking it's not self-interest.

Even the most benevolent, they help the poor and needy because it makes them FEEL good and they want to feel GOOD. That they're doing good, that they're helping others. That's self-interest. It's not particularly selfish or self-centered.

But when you had those "behavior" brow-beat into you for fear of god, or love of god, or who knows what you delude yourself into thinking. It became self-interest.

A nice segway, I like using TV as an example on life. Friends episode with Phoebe and her obsession with a selfless deed.

Granted, China is incredibly strict, like the difference between a parent who beats their child with a belt for misbehaving and a hippie parent with no rules and let their kids run amok. Who's to say which parenting style is better and which parenting style is forbidden?

BOFH who lock their networks down like a jail in hopes of making it secure.

And "mental patients dying from extreme treatment". Not sure how those treatments were suppose to help but America had their share of problems in mental health care. One flew over a cuckoo nest was a good Academy winning movie and book.

Look I'm not saying everything in China is great, or the middle East. But they don't like others, young countries, coming in telling them what to do any more then you would like the government to come into your home and tell you how to raise your children. The Chinese people WORSHIPPED Mao Zedong and Westerners hate his ideals. It's a different culture.

Oh my god, I need to capture every minute of my child's life on film (without their consent) and possibly show it later in their life, because by god, a child peeing on a toilet or taking a bath or running around nude is just too precious.

And "Served their debt to society" only applies to certain things. A rapist will always be a rapist, and a true child molester will always be one, and nothing they can do will make up for the harm. Rehabilitation is ludicrous, there was something wrong with the person, they chose to ignore their better sense, they lack the better sense, or they couldn't help themselves, none of which can be fixed. In recent news, a rapist was denied probation because he was a repeat offender and after previously serving his time, he raped again and was tossed back in jail.

It's of little comfort to the new victims when you tell them, the offender deserved another chance to rape again, because he JUST might not if we close our eyes, clap hard enough, and say we believe.

We live in capitalism. Anything you can do to take money from others is far game as long as it's not illegal. Control the supply and people will pay whatever you deem. Even then, scare tactics and absolute control can get you past the pesky illegal.

Our city hired a private contractor to hand out parking tickets. They're so good at it, they hand them out even if you've done nothing wrong, and you can't contest it. If you don't pay, you lose your license. The city and state attorney general won't do anything about it, the city gets a portion of the proceeds of course.

That and book scams don't surprise me. In all reality, it'd make sense to buy a kindle, buy electronic text books, and "unnecessary edition changes" can be less costly. But it's the same resistance as Music CDs to MP3 players.

What would be cool would be if every "properly registered" car are lit up, if there was a way to pinpoint unregistered cars (which is a problem in my minority area) and be able to get all those people without registration, insurance, or license, off the road.
