Finally...I get to the bottom of this thread and find someone who has half a clue as to WHAT actually happened.
It was immediately obvious to me that the chip either had an internal short or something external to the chip put pulling too much current....either way, the chip pops as seen in the screenshots.

What's really wild is that if you look closely, it appears that one of the chip's leads has either fallin off or the solder on that lead began melting (if the drive was mounted with the PCB facing downwards. Either way, that chip got way hot.

I realize that this is just a prototype....BUT, if they are THAT far off of what they think Marvin should look like, then it really leaves me worried about how screwed up the rest of the movie is going to be.

Seriously, does ANYONE think that Marvin is suppose to be a cute looking short robot with a HUGE round head!??

He should be taller, darker, more mechanical looking, slightly sinister, and oh, has everyone forgotten one very important piece????

Marvin's all important PEG LEG!!!!! I mean come on! The peg leg is actually an important piece of the story latter on. ....Marvin should look his age....several million years old for pete's sake!!! Not like some new fangled Honda robot!

If the writers/prop makers can't even get Marvin remotely close to the way he should be, then I have serious doubts about the rest of the film. /rant off

naw, screw it. Leave the /rant on. It's justified. If they screw this film up, I'm going to be very pissed.

    You'd think, huh?

Problem is, transmitting DC in large quantities over large distances is VERY inefficient. AC trumps DC all day long regarding this particular issue.
This was the main reason AC won out over Edison's DC.

  5. Re:Of course... on Tubes vs Transistors: An Audible Difference? · · Score: 5, Informative

Bob Carver did this already. If I remember correctly, it's the increaed resistance from a tube amp using output transformers that creates the 'soft' sound that characterizes glass audio.

Carver created a solid state amp which pretty much mimicked a $10K tube amp and no one could tell the differencec in blind tests.

  6. Tubes also degrade over time on Tubes vs Transistors: An Audible Difference? · · Score: 5, Interesting

If part of being better includes consistanly sounding the same, then glass audiophiles have to tuck their tales between their legs. Tubes wear out. As they wear out, their sound qualities change. Who's to say that the 'changed' sound is desireable? Maybe it's an improvement...that's the problem; it's not cosistent.

Regardless of which one you feel is more accurate in its source reproduction, solid state devices have the advantage in that they pretty much (not 100%) maintain whatever sound characteristic they start with.

Being a pretty newb Gentoo user, I have to take account with this. As far as I understand, etc-update, when invoked, provides a list of _potential_ updates in /etc. If you're dumb/crazy enough to tell it to go ahead and replace the existing configuration files with the updated ones BLINDLY, it will do it...
I go through EACH one of the provided possible updated files and ensure that it doesn't replace anything *custom* that I don't want to lose.

From the way you're describing it, you hit the -3 option and told etc-update to go ahead and replace everything w/o letting you check each one first.
If this is the case, shame on you.
