I think people need to seperate the two halves of this article into "Free vs Open Source" and "Free Software and capitalism".

Alright ... you go do that ... because you and RMS are the only ones who care.

People love to scoff at "GNU/Linux" enthusiasts, but they forget that the Linux kernel is under the GNU GPL, and that without The GNU PRoject it's unlikely the Linux project would ever have grown so large.

*EEEEMMMPPP* wrong again *EEEEMMMPPP* Linux is so big because of peoples desire for options and a desire to create. Without the GNU project it would still be open source and would still thrive. It's because the GNU is a leech on the computer world and can't get their own OS working that GNU openly endorsed linux. GNU slaps its name on all kinds of things, but that's all it is ... a brand name.

There have been so many articles on /. of late where columnists laud StarOffice and Macromedia Flash because they're "flashy and cool", and who suggest that the open source and free software communities should embrace proprietary software, miss the point entirely.

You show me where I can eat, sleep, live, and be comfortable for free ... and I'll start liking the boring blinking console. Until that time ... I'll keep using the "flashy and cool stuff.

As for the discussion of Marxism in relation to Free Software, I'm sure plenty of ignoramuses will be posting saying how the author of the article must be a communist pig, and that he obviously wants to hijack Linux to take down President Bush.

Here ... from your beloved gnu.org

Yup, righto that's $5K American dollars for FREE software ... which absolutely amazes me because you would think they would just charge for the cost of the production because they don't really like money. But companies like cheapbytes are bad because they're a capitalistic company trying to spread linux at an affordable cost ... right?

Looks too me like all that's been accomplished thus far is a ./configure, make to Debian Base inside Cygwin, no big deal, but you HAVE to have some place to get your feet wet.

Then we hear the rants about how sourceforge is the devil? Since when? I would love to see another FREE (as in someone else gets stuck with the bill) For LOTS of bandwidth and lots of server space. Not to mention free web-hosting, Free CVS, Free advertising, and a whole lot more ... so what if they're owned by VA ... so's /. ...

So where do I stand in my views of Debian ... Like GNU I will not let the views of a few define how I feel about a project as a whole, but it pisses me off and makes me want to kill the whole thing and go to slackware (ohh yeah ... BTW, a little FYI ... apt-sucks ... no one is allowed to make fun of redhat any more ...) And the only reason people from slack like to compile from source ... The DMCA is a hassel and should definantelly be considered in the supreme court, why it's still in circut court is far beyound me, I guess EFF is just trying to go through the motions of getting it directly to the supreme court. Why the DoJ would make a motion to dismiss is beyound me though.

Eric Raymond this, Stallman that, Torvalds there ... Great men in the world of open source, but what some people fail to realize is even without them open source will live on forever. It's not a power to choose ... it's a choice to choose.

I'll tell you why I personallu endorse open source ... I want the ability to maybe help someone out with my code in the future to be able to help them with their personal code, because I would have never learned the languages I know now had it not been for the viewing of working source code.

I don't need to feel better about my Linux OS by knowing the code is there ... personally I've never looked at the kernel source code and I have no real intention to do so in the future, if I could upgrade a kernel via binary I probably would ... there's no benefit to me for it being open source.

HOWEVER with the source there I can look at it to get a feel for how an operating system functions at the basic level of source code, and because I don't want to go poke around at the code doesn't mean that thousands of others around the world don't every single day.
