Regardless of whether or not you can bring yourself to believe it, Microsoft has an incredibly dense population of highly skilled developers. The problem with the company as I see it is that its primarilly driven by marketers, rather than "technology". Low and behold though, their money comes from market driven sales, not cool features and technology.

Microsoft is both a Mecca of marketing genius and development genius. To say otherwise would simply be foolish.

An example of how marketing genius drives the company, if you notice the ads for Live Meeting on TV, you'll hear a VoIP voice say "Go Live" in its typical encoded manor. What they do not tell you is that Live Meeting does not currently have VoIP support simply because its unreliable over open networks (think small companies with limited bandwidth) and often too difficult to understand because of packet loss. This is a perfect example of Microsoft's marketing drive.

.NET is shorthand for .NET Framework, which is essentially a Virtual Machine and standardized API like Java. MS tends to append ".NET" to anything thats deployed supporting any .NET Framework applications.

.NET Remoting is the MS equivalent for Java RMI, except that instead of making function calls only binary, they allow serialization to XML and greater control over instantiation of objects. The XMl serialization is important because it allows third party applications running on non-MS OSes to inter-operate with a .NET Remoting application. In my opinnion, this .NET Remoting is very well thought out and takes RMI to a new level.

We need to rely on science and statistics. GHE advocates rely on the statistics that the Earth is warming and conclude (through no scientific means!) that its due to green house gasses produced by Humans.

The answer to whether or not the GHE exists is not known. It is not proven. If it is not proven then its a Theory and therefore Not Scientifically Backed.

  19. Re:Not to be cruel, but... on Gov't Proposes Massive Homeless Tracking System · · Score: 1

Lack of funding is the routine excuse politicians use when homeless numbers increase. The reality is that the homeless count fluxtuates with the economy which is virtually uncontrollable. Even in an excellent economy those who are homeless are hardly employable (now there are exceptions of course!), but thats not the point. The reality is that here in Boston (just as an example), funding for shelters has increased every single year for the past 4 years without capacity coming anywhere near to 100%. The problem is that these people are mentally ill and/or substance abusers who do not want to enter shelters. You cannot force these people to be institutionalized anymore. Unfortunately this is the crux of this problem. If you cannot force them into institutions, atleast track them for their own personal health!

  20. This is a GOOD thing. on Gov't Proposes Massive Homeless Tracking System · · Score: 1

The majority of Homeless people are not a problem. Its the minority of homeless whom you see pandhandling, urinating in the streets, boozing, doing drugs and grilling pigeons with a hibachi that are the chronic law breakers. The problem here in Boston is that homelessness seems to be a get out of jail free card. The police blatently fail to prosecute and the politicians routinely blame lack of funding as being a direct cause of homeless on the streets. Yet, for the past 4 consecutive years homeless shelter funding has increased. The kicker is that these shelters are nowhere near capacity and never have been. The underlying problem with the homeless is that those who do not want to go to shelters are those who are drunk, on drugs or severly mentally ill. Those individuals are also the ones who would benefit the most from being institutionalized, but their civil liberties are protected by the Consitution (as they should be). So to put it bluntly, those homeless on the streets are usually the individuals breaking the law on a routine basis; they will not seek shelter b/c they are drunk or on drugs or mentally ill. These are also the most dangerous individuals not only from an economic stand point (e.g. Times Square in the 80's) but also from a public safety stand point.

That being said, tracking homeless only at shelters will likely not put names on those who are dangerous. Tracking them as a public health service I believe is critical, not only for those individuals well being, but for those of the general public. It also would be a very convenient way of tracking the total number of homeless.

Now that I think about it, everyone who claims that the north pole melting will flood the planet doesn't know the geology of the North Pole (or the Physics of Ice, for that matter). Ice floating in water has MORE volume than if that ice were a liquid. This is because Ice expands when it is frozen (versus most other liquids which shrink when they freeze). So Sea level would potentially lower if the north pole were to melt. Combine this with all the continental ice of the south pole, and it just might not move at all.
