Noone said anything specifically about TIVO being doomed just the DVR market in general. BTW, It was a third party that made Time Warner's DVR. Scientific Atlanta.
Looks like there is an update, dated 4/18/2002, for the application software that shipped with the card. Not a driver update but DVRExport.exe is updated, which is the export program. I haven't had a chance to install the update yet, working, but plan to later.
Actually it a good $99 Hardware MPEG2 encoder card/TV tuner. The drivers are where the "piece of junk" label should be used.
I have had this card for about 2-3 months now in a dedicated home theater pc hooked up to my reciever for viewing on my tv and find it extremely reliable. I've reencoded about 70 shows to SVCD to be played on my standalone DVD player and it works great. The main issue that I've heard from other people is Creatives horrible support for Windows XP which is what probably caused the this reviewers bad experience.
One of the main differences is that the Creative Video Blaster Digital Digital VCR encodes via a hardware MPG2 encoder chip while the ATI AIW uses pure software to do the encoding. That means much less processer overhead for the DVCR while encoding. The DVCR also has the ability to pause live tv, etc...
My boss has the Sprint ION service here in Austin Texas and he loves it. One of the main problems that I saw with the service, after talking to him about it, is that only homeowners could get the it. No apartments. There goes more than half the market right there.
You forgot about Acclaim Entertainment, Retroactive, Inevitable, Kalisto, etc..., etc...
Unfortunatly, since we still have a viable tech market we also have the inevitable influx of Californians. No offense meant, but since Cali is so expensive already they don't mind paying a hell of a lot more for rent, clubbing, etc... which raises the prices for the rest of us "locals". Oh well, you take the good with the bad.
"...either Burton or 20th Century Fox went for still another memorable ending to this Planet of the Apes. I suppose you have to admire their guts, and this one is also a jaw-dropper, but alas, mostly because it's so dumb."
You got that right! My suspension of disbelief was horribly murdered, never to return, after seeing that poor excuse for an ending.
Yoga is good too. I have a company supplied membership to a local gym that teaches, among other things, yoga classes. It's extremely good for posture and stress relief. And lets not forget about the gorgeous women that take the class too. Give it a shot.
Here is a very good and very thorough article regarding the history of color photography. After reading it I really started to wonder why the user of color photography took so long to catch on with the masses.
Excuse me but hasn't the Kaleidoscope already done this for years, like since OS 7? I remember using it on a Mac Color Classic for crying out loud. It even works on OS 8 and 9.
Just read the bible:
Gen 7:4 ...and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
Gen 19:24
Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven...
Duet 3:6-7
And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city. 3:7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.
etc., ad nauseam...
It seems clear that John Ashcroft and the Christian Coalition should ban the bible because of its deplorable violence.
Right there with you Transwarp Conduit. They screwed up California so much that they had to get out. Now they move here because we actually HAVE electricity, rent under $1000 for a 1 bedroom in Austin, etc... And to everyone moving here from California, do me a favor, when your buying a 2 bedroom house in Austin and they ask you for $250,000. SAY NO! They know your from Cali and they know that that is cheap in Cali. Until 2 or 3 years ago that would have been laughed at here. Do yourself and US a favor and just say no.
Yes I know you are a troll but since I don't have mod status...
So by your logic if I'm well paid I shouldn't care about being forced to pay for something that I don't want and am not going to use. It wouldn't matter if I had all of Bill "Mother F**king" Gates' money, I still wouldn't feel OK about being robbed. Your "logic" is flawed.
I agree with the sentiment, and as long as it is a CONTRIBUTION that's wonderful. But contribution denotes a choice. Red Hat isn't giving people a choice of whether to pay for, contribute to, the service; aside from not using it that is. At least the updates are still freely downloadable and like the CmdrTaco said, "how long before other services pop up to take its place?"

"...they plan to respond to criticisms that the DVR market is doomed."
Time Warner doesn't think it's doomed. They just launched the Explorer 8000 Digital Video Recorder here in Austin, TX.Best Buy?
As long as the actual computer cluster is named the WOPR.
How about a nice game of chess?

alt.binaries.tv.farscape. Had them all in high quality SVCD months ago.

For the average user the $999 price tag is a little steep whe you compare it to an $300 AIWA mp3 cd player.
It looka like Tucows still has it.
The legal costs to the smaller OSS company.
I don't know about anyone else here but I HAD to take a Human Factors class before graduation from college. I'm damn glad of it too.

There are already $300 units for sale from major vendors?
Aiwa CDC-MP3

I was going to flame you for living up to the stereotype until I saw:
-Craig (formerly of Schulenburg, TX)
I guess you never got to Austin or you would have had a different impression.
So we shouldn't use any distro that has an updating system on the off chance that they may charge for it in the future?
