If I was the CRIA, I would be hiring a bunch people to go online and stear the conversations towards my own agenda. Good thing we slashdotted the website. We have foiled their schemes!
We really need a car analogy here to see what's going on clearly.
Say that I sat on some street corner telling people where to get cars for free so they wouldn't have to pay for them. Except everytime someone takes a car, another car takes its place so we never run out of cars to take. Sometimes it takes a long time to get a car, sometimes only a few minutes. It depends on the make of the car, how big it is and how popular it is.
But let's say that whoever made the first car said that everyone who wanted to get a car had to pay him. And I said that people could take one for free. And some people gave me money because they liked me and I put their pictures on my t-shirt... or something.
And then the dude who said that everyone who wanted a car had to pay him came to me and told me to give him money.
And then I didn't want to give him money.
Okay this was not a very good analogy despite it being a car analogy. I don't understand it, it works so good for Apple.
From what I understand, it only checks for exact phrase matching. The teacher receives a report back with a break-down of how much of the document is unoriginal as well as what percentages come from what sources. Each source is given a colour and the document is colour-coded so large chunks of copying will very easily stand out. Also, it is very easy for the teacher to see where correct quotation methods were used.
These works were never published. Therefore they should not be
subjected to the same expectation that an author cannot completely
control his work. These are all stolen unpublished works. They are
the student's private papers. Defenses based on copyright shouldn't
even be applicable.
What are you talking about? If you create something, you own it. If you write a paper then you own the copyright to that work whether or not you choose to publish it. Publishing your work does not make your copyright claim any stronger.
P.S. Apple - your Windows software update tool sucks donkey balls. Even after I thought I'd got rid of it there is still something that periodically bugs me to update QuickTime.
Phew! Good thing you told them. Because you know, they spend all of their time reading comments on/.
I am still frustrated every time there is not a network neighbourhood as I am instead left picking a network place and going up a level to get there.
I completely agree with you. If I ever need to use a Windows computer for an length of time, I make a shortcut on the desktop to "Microsoft Windows Network" and I call it Network Neighborhood.
So, Mr. Friedman was in fact fired for browsing and watching something online that turned out to be illegal?
I might be "just another internet user" (i.e. stupid), but I thought that you can ONLY get into trouble for downloading (meaning you save data on your harddisk which can be copied and re-distributed). I never knew that watching the wrong youtube movie can mean you lose your job.
When I went to watch Dark Knight, the theatre had an exit door close very close to the screen. The bright red exit sign lit up the entire bottom right hand corner of the screen.
It was unacceptable. My friend went down to the front and tried to throw his jacket over the sign. Sadly it was too high so I had to put up with it for the entire movie.
It still fails Acid Test 3 horribly. Not as horribly as previous versions of IE but it still fails horribly.
Also, the buttons still look like Windows 3.1.
What you need is to increase the power of the laser every time the signal drops.
Say a goose flies into the line, you just need to increase the power of the laser (a lot) and you could burn right through the goose without losing any packets.
With a powerful enough laser, nothing could stop the downloading of 1.2 TB of information at any given second of the day.

"Volcanism and earthquakes are already greatly increasing and Niburu is still 11 months away as of June 2002."
I love doomsday stories but contradictions like this bother even me.

it's much worse now - before they just kicked you off the internet - now some clueless judge will rubber stamp prison time.
Good point. And switching ISPs after receiving two strikes won't help you out.
Still, I do not like the idea of an ISP having the right to terminate services because they don't like the amount of download that I may be doing.
At least now it requires a judge to declare guilt. This takes the responsibility away from the ISPs which is also a good thing.
Just saying that we are going to slashdot_effect every single one of them.
They can put a man on the moon but they still can't give us phosphorescent flying monkeys?!
Anyone who designs something with vertical tabs should be killed!
Finally someone who agrees with me. Words written sideways!!!? I use a laptop, I can't just flip it on its side like I could with a monitor.

Yes, but can it run Linux?
[...] perhaps in 2011 or 2012, holographic discs using its technology will be less than 10 cents a gigabyte [...]
Yeah perhaps the disks will be that cheap. From the summary, I assumed that they were 10 cents a GB already...
500GB disks that will cost 10 cents a GB to produce at launch
But I guess you never can be too sure in life.
I installed and it didn't give me sound drivers, wireless drivers, modem drivers (yes I have a modem you insensitive clout), or even ethernet drivers.
Needless to say, hunting for drivers was difficult.
Yes. I am talking about XP on my Thinkpad.
Just as a side note, Ubuntu had all the drivers that I needed.

What I want to know is if it can find people with powers. If it can, then I need to build myself an awful looking hat.

You can be fired for breaking company policy.
That was stupid of him. What did he expect would happen?

Then again, when your audience thinks that the Wheel of Time and Snow Crash are high art, their expectations aren't exactly difficult to exceed.
Wheel of Time is high art!
Hey, I love every single one of the books. For me, there is nothing as sad as the end of a story.
