Interesting. I can see how this would be the case, though I haven't noticed a loss of depth perception at night. Moving bright lights would throw off the occlusion and parallax cues. Color intensity changes due to depth would be nonexistent at night.

Interestingly enough, our brains have so many specialized circuits for recognizing individual human faces that faces are one of the most important depth cues. The brain knows how big a face is, and can therefore instantly judge the distance.

It sounds as though you are advocating that large corporations should be above the law. I think that's known as fascism.

What's with all the non ruling class people constantly defending ruling class interests? If you make less than 2 hundred thousand a year, and own assets of less than 1 million, you have more in common with the working poor than the owning class. Trust me, they don't care that you are kissing their ass, they still aren't going to let you in the club.

What about other drivers, not realizing someone would be breaking the law that egregiously, and making a quick lane change thinking they've got plenty of time? The highways would be safe for 100+ MPH travel if they were either empty, full of drivers also going 100+ MPH, or at the very least full of drivers expecting others to be doing 100+ MPH. None of those things are true.

Sometimes it is okay to break the law. Sometimes it is even necessary. This is neither. This is just an asshole who thinks the rules don't apply to him. He is not cool, he is not a daring rebel sticking it to the man. He's a sociopath who should be thrown in jail.

Joke all you like, but your hyperbole doesn't change the facts. Solar radiation is decreasing, and yet the Earth is still warming up. Your world-view is skewed. Scientists don't care whether the earth is warming or cooling, in fact, anyone who can prove the mainstream wrong will be lauded as a genius, just like Einstein was when he showed that our previous understanding of physics was wrong. No one gets extra funding for supporting global warming. In fact, there are companies willing to give huge cash handouts to scientists who will deny global warming.

I don't buy the 'disinterested skeptic' bit. People who deny global warming are the ones with ulterior motives, even if that's just not wanting to change their lifestyle or not wanting the damn hippies to be right. Global warming deniers have a classic case of projection going on, calling others' motives into question when their own are the more questionable.

One can easily end multiple sentences with a single preposition. You are allowed to use words more than once, thankfully, or we would have run out by now. I suppose that raises the question, is a word used in multiple places the same word, or different? As for 'with,' the sentence we were looking for was 'Ending a sentence with a preposition is an outrage we won't put up with.' Winston Churchill coined the witticism to illustrate the ridiculous lengths one would have to go to in order to follow the (completely false, made up, classist) rule that one can't end a sentence in a preposition. That rule is a shibboleth, designed to distinguish upper class Brits from commoners. It comes from Latin, not English.

Let me spell it out. People, including me, are worried about letting the government have the power to shut down our cars. We think it may become mandatory, and we think that, like many other government programs in the past (Tuskegee, COINTELPRO, and countless others) it will be abused, and innocent people will be harmed. The government has a history of expanding its powers, making voluntary things mandatory, and screwing over innocents. Why should this be any different?

The problem isn't (hopefully) people like you. It's the sociopaths and psychopaths that get into positions like yours, and even more influential positions in government. We both know they exist, and I at least know there isn't enough oversight to keep them all in line. I've seen my friends beaten by police for handing out free food to homeless people. I've come close to getting beaten myself for the same thing. Is that an indictment against everyone in government? No, but it is an example.

The reason I speak out anytime you do is that you only speak out when the message is "trust the status quo." I don't, and I don't think others should, either. When you say, "trust the status quo," I am going to point out that you have a vested interest in defending the status quo. That is relevant to the discussion.

Because the police always operate in such a safe and sane manner. And our government has never taken voluntary safety devices like seat belts or air bags and made them mandatory. And the government has never, ever lied to us.

Thanks again, dave! Without you, we wouldn't know what to be scared of (terrists) and what not to be scared of (the status quo).
