This's very interesting, but there's another point.
Being in a hw and sw developer company, our desktop are always full with compiler, debuggers and all sort of stuff a heavy developer runs to do his work. Shutting down means that we must spend at least 10/15 minutes in the morning to have all the desktop setup as was the day before.
how that can impact? I know that there's suspend and hibernate but due to hw issues (and OS issue, if using linux and we do), not always is possible...
but the US own the GPS, thus can restrict it's use to others except themselves in case of . And the US will complain (as did with Galileo Project) since has no more control on the navigation system, dropping to the same level as others...
control is the power... and not having it is the issue...
I hope that EU will have it's own GPS system, as US will have it's own... better if both will be the very same and integrated, without giving total control to only 1 country.... something like the Internet... no central node of control.
'Linux is not ready for mission-critical computing'
mmh... let's m$ show us where they use winXX as mission critical OS... mmh, why msn has squid proxy servers behind web servers ? I don't think squid runs on winblows... oh, also... why bigger computers in the world (see earth simulator) or similar doesn't run winblow$ ? mmmh...
the true sentence is: 'Windows is ready for making computing a critical mission'... while Linux "just works" (tm)
as far as I know, even if you don't modify the code but just add it into your closed source app, you must distribute the whole code as GPL if you sell that code (that is KISS case). but you are not obliged to distribute the closed source code with GPL code in it (modified or not) if used for own purposes (ie not sold in any manner)
now... how can we be 100% sure that him is him? I mean... he has a lot of men similar to himself and used all'round the world for public relation... now on what basis intelligence say that saddam is saddam ? of course, the poor man will never confess, perhaps with DNA comparison... anyone has saddam DNA map to compare with? come on, don't be so happy without veryfing all data before... I'll be happy if saddam has been captured, but only when there's a real, scientific proof of that. being sarcastic: perhaps is a bush&blair move to gain some shares, after all problems they're causing?
Gnomemeeting is a panic and only a client... Vocal... bah... is only an ifrastructure, you'll need a lot of integration to make a decent VoIP server and only supports SIP... Linphone... never been able to make it work correctly (even patching the code...) , perhaps too Vocal-centric ? Bayonne... more platforms! ah ah! you meant more "dialogic cards only"...
btw, Asterisk supports sip,h323,mgcp... supports standard tdm technologie (pri/pra,bri(te/nt)), supports analog techs (fxo/fxs)... all in 1 software, giving same services to all technologies, making then interoperate without issue. to obtain that you'll need at least one vocal server, one h323 gatekeerper, one bayonne server for pstn gw.... sorry, but asterisk if a lot more than a simple hobbist soft-pbx... many VoIP termination services run with asterisk... give me an example of one termination service running with only 1 soft-pbx platform, if you can.
unfortunately, SIP isn't the 'preferred' protocol used by Cisco. Cisco mainly uses it's main protocol, called Skinny, aka SCCP . Softphones only works with Skinny. Only high end phones like 7940 or 7960 support SIP, but with a different firmware, not loaded by default. the other phones works only with sccp or h323. A good idea is to have gateways to support all VoIP protocols, so a linux (or mac) user could use software like gnomemeeting for h323 or kphone and linphone for SIP. As far as I know, there isn't a skinny client for linux. Only asterisk (an opensource pbx) seems to have a sccp channel driver, but is in beta stage.
as far as I know, no in the stanard setup, since sshd is by default a standalone daemon, not spawned by tcp wrappers. you can put it under tcp wrappers (if not already done) or build a simple firewall rule with iptables to limit the access.
also are quick fixed and is *generally* harder to exploit. And the patches are stable. not as the first slammer patch that wasn't fixing the M$ problem @ 100%, thus requiring a second patch for the same problem....
mmh, I think you're wrong. with linux you can have the same performances as windows with less hardware power, which can be translated into less energy consumed. also remeber that we have and Ecology-HOWTO . The energy sukers are winzoz users, 'cause to open notepad needs to change their pc every 6 monts, 'cause winzoz needs every day (and every program u install) more power to do the same things...
There's a linux software, called * (www.asterisk.org) that supports sip,h323,pstn,isdn,pri(E1,T1). you can plug the cisco phone to it and use * as gateway or so.
We're using it in our office and rocks.
I've never taken my.name domain just because they don't sell directly to individuals. But now, I have a chanche. I think that's a good idea, but the news should be promoted *alot* .
>Secondly, there is no way a person could legally download more than 1 gig in a day
Legally? if I want to test a new linux distro, or freebsd or whatever like that, is not legal ? all of these are more than 1/2 gigs...
then... why VPN will not be allowed? I think that's not legal from the isp. VPN doesn't mean "I'm linking to my workplace" , bit could also be "I'm vpn'ing my friend to test, to experience vpn, just to have a vpn 4 fun".
I think that points of one of the bigger problems of opensource community. I like OpenSource, I like linux & related. But I hate seeing people speaking a lot of blah blah on silly things. Seems that OpenSource commnunity likes all those blah blah. If that could be "converted" into coding energy or something like that, the opensource could really win the battle with proprietary.
Mplayer is on of the best players under linux, one of the most increasing in features and bugfixes. I can ignore Gabucino GPL violations , since I have a product that really works. And any other software like that that's fully GPL (any?) doesn't provide what mplayer does.
So the question is: is better a very good product with a little (no binary) license problem (but I have the sources), or is better a fully GPL-compliant software that does only half of the things I need ?
And probably you've to plug in the power chord to discover that your pc could also crash if m$ powered.... Unfortunately Linux is too old, too bad that could not yet crash as well m$ do...
Alot of my friend aren't geek. Not all of them owns a computer. Less can use it well. But they listen to alot of music. How can be able to buy & use a such cd? The only way is not a new copy protection scheme (hey, it's only a software so it can be broken), but lowering the cd prices. Only with lower prices people will be happy to buy an original cd and not a copied one. And only with lower prices music piracy could not get enough money and will fail...
I think there's no true in saying "I just use win because I must not think, because It just do what I need, because I won't learn Linux (or others)". People say this just because M$ imposed them such mentality. If we (for some reason) will be obliged to use Linux, Linux could be as natural as Windows now is (and probably people will say for windows what they now say for Linux). And so on.
The mean of this is that we must use our minds. If we go on with "less I think, better is" any company like M$ could drive us to do what they want. But if we use the grey matter we have in our skulls, probably we will able to do what we *really* want, not what THEY want. And Linux is a SO that could enable us to do this, at least in computing area.
Use your head, it's better.
However, I use much more Linux that Winzoz. At my company we use Linux as server (and some clients), but mainly windows for developing web apps... this because some editor are not present in Linux (flash, dreamweaver). But I think that for a normal home use (internet,email,mp3,office and games) linux could be used with no problem, and no knowing in "how it works", as lazy-minded windows users wants.
I play regulary RTCW under linux... and it rocks. There're several games out of there that runs on linux, and are pretty good. For office there's openoffice. Ok, probably it does not have the visualbasic extensions of M$ Office, but how many (in a normal home use) need it?
And for browsing? mozilla,netscape,galeon... they beat IE a long way.
And for email? evolution... much better, stable and nice than outlook.
and for multimedia? xmms is the same (and better) as winamp is under windows. and remember mplayer : a real multimedia video player... that supports almost anything.
probably you'll have to learn how to use rpm or dpkg, but in the end is not much more different that knowing that u must click on "setup.exe" to install a new software on win.
This's very interesting, but there's another point.

Yeah . to bad they not already ships evolution 1.2 , since is a long time ev is out.

.
if someone has enough bandwidth could run
from the shell (also if he has *nix):
ab -c 20 -n 10000 and just wait
I'm running it and get something like
~3700 kbit/s (but slashdot main site
gives me ~6500 kbit/s)
just 4 fun.
Yawn... another annoying overclocking story.
Anything better?
