First of all the space shuttle is mostly 70's technology. Second of all there is no reason why "old" should be equated with "inferior". Soyuz is the most reliable manned spacecraft and it has direct roots all the way back to the start of the Soviet space program. Old can also mean simpler and less likely to suffer from mysterious technology failures. I have lab equipment older than you and it ticks along nicely and serves its purpose just as well as it ever did.

  8. Doing touch screens right... for lefties on Canonical Bringing an Instant-On Ubuntu · · Score: 4, Interesting

It would be nice if they could make the effort to implement a touch based layout without biasing against lefties. This is a significant annoyance especially with traditional mouse oriented controls like scroll bars. To do this right requires a design that minimizes the occurrence of the hand covering the screen while performing touch operations. Usually what happens is a system is designed assuming right handedness and the result is awkward to use for lefties. Ideally, applications and the window manager will dynamically change based on a user hand preference.

Without WAAS, plain GPS can have error in the hundreds of feet.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. It is applicable to first generation GPS receivers and doesn't apply to modern equipment made in the past 10 years or so. I leave WAAS off on my eTrex because the estimated positional accuracy usually gets *worse* with it enabled and it can't be used in power save mode. Without WAAS, I routinely get absolute accuracy to within 19-feet and never above 30 with a strong lock. It wouldn't be able to follow roads if the accuracy was only in the hundreds of feet range.

  19. Re:cool. on Decades-Old Soviet Reflector Spotted On the Moon · · Score: 1

One of the characteristics of Soviet spacecraft design is that they seal everything they can in atmospheric pressure vessels. This simplified the thermal design problem because convective cooling could be employed in the pressurized parts. Some of their manned spacecraft designs were repurposed as satellites using this principle. Their purpose built satellites were also pressurized. The "tub" of the lunokhod is a pressure vessel for the electronics. The Wikipedia page even mentions that the electric motors in each wheel were also pressurized although that was possibly more for lubrication and dust protection purposes. In contrast, the typical American design places the electronics in vacuum and they are thermally bonded to a heat spreader that provides for conductive cooling.
